This book is by Anne M. Collier and is more of a history of the town of Portage La Prairie. It does not have the detailed family stories but it does have a list of early settlers (page 312-319)with a sentence or two about them. W. Hello Shannah, Since you are new to researching you should go to the Manitoba GenWeb Project main page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~canmb/ and spend some time going through everything shown. In the questions section it does tell you how to go about trying to find living relatives which may help you. After reading through the board you will have a better idea of what information is available for researchers. Spend extra time looking through the Winnipeg section and also the MGS link. Hello Gary, a bit of sleuthing for you to give you some leads, perhaps..... As Ruth came to Canada in 1854 it would have been to Ontario. In the 1881 census in Manitoba, James Ravey family is the only one to spell their name R A V E Y. However there is a 7-year old Carles Ravey living with the Henry James family in Hastings North, Ontario so perhaps Carles is James and Ruth's son living with her brother. Mabel and Martin were born in Ontario and Carles is an age in between. There is a Margaret James living with Henry, born c1823 who could be Ruth's mother. Conclusion is Ruth Ravey was formerly Ruth James. What do you think? I am looking for James RAVEY b: abt 1841 England. In the 1901 census it said he immigrated in 1870. In the 1881 census he was living in Dufferin, Marquette, Manitoba with his wife Ruth b: 12-26-1846, England. Karen, Thank you so much for the enclosed! :) Now, I was wondering, if you had any idea of how I may go about researching these cousins of mine? This is the first time I have ever had anything to do with this part of "researching". Thank you so much. :) Shannah ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karen S" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, December 23, 2002 2:55 PM Subject: Re: [CAN-Manitoba] TWISS family--Shannah to Karen > Hello Shannah, > I'm so sorry I forgot to say these are the Winnipeg Henderson's Directories. > They are just the names of different areas but are all within the city > limits. > Karen > > > > > > > > >From: "Shannah Griggs" <[email protected]> > >Reply-To: [email protected] > >To: [email protected] > >Subject: [CAN-Manitoba] TWISS family--Shannah to Karen > >Date: Sun, 22 Dec 2002 20:32:37 -0800 > > > >Karen, > > > >Oh, thank you ever so much! <BG> But, please, where are these places? > >This I need to know! :) > > > >Thank you so much! > > > >Shannah > >[email protected] > >OR > >[email protected] > >----- Original Message ----- > >From: "Karen S" <[email protected]> > >To: <[email protected]> > >Sent: Saturday, December 21, 2002 9:50 AM > >Subject: Re: [CAN-Manitoba] TWISS family--Shannah to Karen > > > > > > > Hello Shannah, > > > Sorry, but I couldn't find anything on TWISS in the newspapers I have. > > > Seems to be an unusual name. Hello Gerry, Manitoba Semi Weekly Free Press March 29, 1900 ELLIS-On the 21st inst., at the general hospital, of cancer, John Ellis, in the 65th year of his age. I found another John Ellis in The Hills of Home rural municipality of Thompson book which was written in 1967. John Ellis was born in Stonewall, Manitoba in 1885. He married Rose Snowdon of Altamont, Man., who was born in 1887. They farmed in the Altamont district before coming to Miami in 1929 were they bought the N. half Sec. 33-4-6. John Ellis was one of those men who threshed for many years with the old steam engines, doing his own and also custom work. After coming to the Miami district he was often called on to doctor sick animals for his neighbors. Many times he sat up all night with a sick horse or cow. Their son, Harvey, farmed on the half section known as the Huehn place on 4-5-6 for a few years. When he went into the service, Raymond farmed this half section and worked with his father on the home farm until Mr. Ellis suffered a stroke in 1948. At this time Mr. and Mrs. John Ellis retired to Miami and Raymond and his wife moved on to the home farm. Mr. Ellis passed away April 25, 1954 and was buried in the Miami cemetery. Mrs. Ellis is still residing in Miami. The farm was later sold to Jacob Friesen and the half section on 4-5-6- to Dan Harder. The family of Mr. and Mrs. John Ellis is: Raymond, who married Alice Menzies and resides in Miami; Doris, Mrs. Jim Sprott living Miami; Harvey, who married Violet Huehn, living in Winnipeg; Gerald, who married Norma McLeod a former school teacher. They live in Ottawa, Ontario since his retirement from the services. On the Manitoba GenWeb page there is a volunteer lookup section that lists a book R.M. of Ellis 1883-1983. The Ellis' in it are a John Ellis from Nova Scotia. Rupert Ellis who is the son of John. Scott Sr. also son of John. Scotty Ellis born 1895. Joseph Ellis born in 1900. Owen Ellis (Tim). If you are interested give the lookup an email. Another book, They Came For The Future, Teulon and District History book also has an Ellis. Major Edward Ellis from Puslinch County, Ontario married Margaret McEwen and lived north of Stonewall. Daughter Mary, son Thomas. Major Ellis died in 1911. Long story. Hope this helps, Karen >From: "Ms. Gerry Perry" <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [CAN-Manitoba] MANITOBA SEMI-WEEKLY PREE PRESS death notices >for March 1900 >Date: Sun, 22 Dec 2002 18:32:24 -0800 > >Hi Karen: I really appreciate your work that you are doing on this list. >By chance, do you have additional information on John ELLIS? > >Thanks, > >Gerry Perry, Las Vegas, NV > >----- Original Message ----- >From: "Karen S" <[email protected]> >To: <[email protected]> >Sent: Tuesday, December 17, 2002 5:18 PM >Subject: [CAN-Manitoba] MANITOBA SEMI-WEEKLY PREE PRESS death notices for >March 1900 > > > > > > The following names appeared in the death notices column. Hello Carol, Barnes and Noble has three copies of that Manitoba book for sale on their web site. Least expensive one is going for $32.58 US. Also the Winnipeg Centennial Library has three copies of that book downtown which you might be able to get through inter library loan. The death and marriages I posted covered all of Manitoba not just Winnipeg. I only own the newspaper copies from January-June of 1900. Good luck, Karen >From: CAROL LAMBERSON <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [CAN-Manitoba] To Carol Re Macdonald history book >Date: Sun, 22 Dec 2002 13:45:13 -0800 (PST) > > >Dear Karen, >Thank you so much.
