Hello Again Eva, Here is the internet link for Arcola's public library. Just in case I can't get the information for a few days (I work in another town with the ambulance for 6 and 7 day shifts), I'm sure the librarian would have absolutely no problem looking up the names for you, it's a very small town and the people are very kind. [email protected] I'll still check it out in ours (Alida) but if you need it sooner I definitely wouldn't hesitate to email them. Take care, Lois --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hi aain Lois, I will check out this site. I have also received information from Darlene in B.C. in which she gve me the information on the McLeod's from a book she has -- "Arcola ~ Kisbey GOLDEN HERITAGE Mountain Hills to Prarie Flats First Printing 1987 The following was taken from Pages 617 and 618 McLEOD Family by Barbara Laundry Arichbald and Mary McLeod moved with their family from Tara, Ont., in the 1890s. They settled on the farm two miles south-west of Arcola, and later retired to Arcola. Archibald died in 1918, and Mary in 1927. They had four children. Grace (Luckhart) had three children. She died in the 1960s. Maude married Rod McEwan and had three children. She died in the 1960s. Edna died in 1927. Thomas, the fourth child. took over the farm. He married Beulah Stauffer and they lived on the farm until their retirement in 1955, when they moved to Burnaby, B.C. Tom died in 1963 and Beulah still lives in Burnaby. Their daughters, Marie and Barbara, grew up and attended school in Arcola. Marie married Dick Rae. She lived in Vancouver until her death in 1979. Barbara married Frank Laundry and they have one son. They live in Burnaby, B.C. My parents were faithful members of the United Church in Arcola. Dad was also acting superintendant of the Sunday School at times and active in other aspects of the church. Mother belonged the Excelsior Homemakers Club for many years. Although times were tough during the dry years of the thirties, we all managed well. Many must remember those church fowl suppers held each fall and still wonder where the goodies came from. Everyone gorged themselves and the ladies worked hard. They also probably remember the concerts after, where my Dad usually gave one of his readings or recitations. He would look around the audience and see who was enjoying themselves and who didn't. Although I have not been back to Arcola since 1954, I have good memories of my growing up days in the Arcola district." This answers most of my questions. Hello Eva, I have an old atlas page that shows Assiniboia. I don't have a date on this page but it shows Manitoba and to the west of that Assiniboia. Assiniboia starts on the west of the Manitoba border and goes all the way to Alberta. North of Assiniboia is Saskatchewan. To the north of Saskatchewan is Athabasca. They are all on this map referred to as the Northwest Territories. I don't see the town you're looking for on my map but I'm sure it is the one you think it is. I have the book Arcola ~ Kisbey GOLDEN HERITAGE Mountain Hills to Prarie Flats First Printing 1987 The following was taken from Pages 617 and 618 McLEOD Family by Barbara Laundry Arichbald and Mary McLeod moved with their family from Tara, Ont., in the 1890s. This is a good link to a map that shows what Karen has pointed out. Hello Lois, Yes I believe this is the Arcola I am looking for. I don't quite know why I thought it would have been in Manitoba! I would appreciate it greatly if you could do a lookup in the history book to see if the following family is listed. What I do know is that they were living in Sullivan Twp., Grey County, Ontario in 1891 (according to Canada census) up until 1899. In a land sale document dated November 1900 it states they were living in Arcola village, Assiniboia, NWT. McLEOD FAMILY: McLEOD, ARCHIBALD, b. abt. 1847 in Ontario wife: McLEOD, MARY, b. abt 1857 in Ontario children: Mary Maud b. July 1880 in Ontario Grace Matilda, b. March 22, 1884 in Ontario Thomas William, b. abt. 1889 in Ontario Any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Hi According to the book " Place Names of Manitoba", Oak Bank, (21,22-11-5 E) was originally known as Moosenose Hill. You can start there. Hello Eva, Arcola, Saskatchewan is a small village appr. 30 minutes from me. Our library probably has it's history book and I could look up your names if you think this is the Arcola you're searching for. Please let me know:) Regards, Lois
Could SKS advise me where Arcola, District of Assiniboia have been located circa 1900? I am trying to locate the following family in the 190l census: McLEOD, ARCHIBALD, b. abt. 1847 in Ontario wife: McLEOD, MARY, b. abt 1857 in Ontario children: Mary Maud b. July 1880 in Ontario Grace Matilda, b. March 22, 1884 in Ontario Thomas William, b. abt. 1889 in Ontario According to information I have they lived in the village of Arcola, district of Assiniboia in 1900. Any information regarding this family or the location of Arcola village would be greatly appreciated. Eva, Vancouver, B.C.
Lynda, My apologies - I didn't find Dick & Peggy Lee but I'm sure glad someone else did for you. If you would like to contact me offline, I'll tell you what I know from having lived in Neepawa, although I expect you know most everything about the Lees in more recent years. Bette
Lynda, I couldn't find a Dick and Penny LEE in Neepawa's heritage book. As I recall, there were only two Lee families there, one of which, Frank & Jean Lee, was Chinese. The other had a 2-3 sons, of which one was Wayne who would be about 50+ now I expect. Bette
Thanks Karen. They don't seem to connect at this point in time. Much appreciated though. -----Original Message----- From: Karen S [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, January 25, 2003 6:24 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [CAN-Manitoba] "East of the Mountains" family history names Hello Leeanne, Robert Buchanan was born at Stoney Creek on March 21, 1886. Hello Lynda, FRANK LEE There was great excitement in Grade 11 class the day Mrs. Cochran announced that a Chinese boy was to join us. Frankie Lee soon taught us some of his ways, including writing and arithmetic, at which he was much better than his classmates. Frankie was in his early teens at the time. Nevertheless he had duties and chores to perform after school hours and at times he found the weather bitterly cold. Our first Chinese residents arrived in Neepawa in 1907. They were Lee Soon, Frankie's father, and Shin Sui. They operated the S.K. Laundry on Mountain Avenue, south of the Hamilton Hotel, where the liquor store is now located. Ling Lee, Frank's uncle, came to Montreal in 1912 and worked in the S.K. Laundry for a few years. Then he and Sam Toy went into partnership and they operated the Royal Cafe, where the Kim Cafe now is, and the Paris Cafe where the Bass & Berg Law Office is located. Ling Lee returned to China, where he died. Fun Lee came to Neepawa in 1942 and bought the S.K. Laundry. He operated the laundry until his death in 1968. Frankie came to Neepawa in 1922. He went to work at the C.N.R. Cafe and it wasn't long before he owned it. He spent long hours making sandwiches an pies. When the trains arrived at the station, Frankie would rush to his door and loudly and furously ring a bell to attract the travellers and the train crew, to come and partake of his wares. He sold the C.N.R. Cafe to Sammy Wo. Sammy Wo operated it for a few years, then planned to return to China. Sadly he died on board ship on the way home and was buried at sea. Frankie returned to China to be married. He and his wife were married in 1927. They have two daughters. Frank returned to Neepawa to continue in the restaurant business. In 1949 his wife Jean and the girls Lorraine and Audrey joined him. Both girls attended the Public School and the N.A.C.I. They were good students. Audrey furthered her education and graduated from University of Manitoba. Frank was a very generous and hospitable man and father. The girls were married in the United Church in Neepawa and friends enjoyed Chinese suppers. Lorraine married Ken Gee. They have two daughters and live in Vancouver. Audrey married Chock Cho. They have two sons and live in Toronto. Frank has been a member of the Neepawa Lions Club for more than forty years, loyal and always ready to support the Club. He attended the International Convention in New York in 1949. He is also a real sportsman, fisherman, golfer, curler and a bowler, liked to be called a 'big Canadian sport'. The Bamboo Garden, operated by Frank, became well-known throughout Manitoba for its Chinese menus. Always a real Neepawa supporter, Frankie assisted the Hospital Aid Society by donating the proceeds for a Hospital Day Tea to the Society, just one of his many contributions. Frank and Jean retired in 1975 and now live in Vancouver. Bill Toy arrived in Neepawa in 1923 and attended public school for four years. He and Frank bought the Royal and Paris Cafes from Lee Ling. The Paris Cafe was sold and the Bamboo Garden created in 1950. In 1972 Bill sold his interests in the Royal Cafe and moved to Vancouver where he passed away in 1974. Mrs. Toy and son Harry live in Vancouver, and Gary lives in Calgary. HO PANG YOU! Ming Dare and his wife Susie live in Neepawa and have two children Marvin and Steven. Dick Lee and his wife Penny live in Neepawa. They have four children, Teri, Orlando, Kingsley and David. Ming and Dick are now the operators of the Bamboo Garden. The history of our Chinese citizens was told by Frank Lee to his good friend George Rey who recorded it. >From: Lynda Falkenberg <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [CAN-Manitoba] book,"Heritage A history of the town of Neepawa >and District >Date: Sat, 25 Jan 2003 15:48:34 -0800 > >Hi Karen > >Yes, I would appreciate the whole story if possible. > > >----- Original Message ----- >From: "Karen S" <[email protected]> >To: <[email protected]> >Sent: Saturday, January 25, 2003 12:19 PM >Subject: Re: [CAN-Manitoba] book,"Heritage A history of the town of Neepawa >and District > > > > Hello Lynda, > > Yes.Dick Lee and his wife Penny live in Neepawa.
