    3. Hi Rosemary, Our BC marriage index goes up to 1942 - If she wasn't free of her first marriage, perhaps Dorothy never legally married Leonard HEWER, and just lived common law. Can you check whether she had her name changed by Deed Poll in the UK? It's possible someone published an obituary or death notice story/ - link to Times Colonist (paper for Victoria BC) online 1858-1970 has a list of marriages BC city directories are online here: Some will include the town of Ganges, Salt Spring Island - try a Wrigley's British Columbia Directory, or a Victoria City and Vancouver Island Directory. The Victoria Genealogical Society might help with other years or ask Vancouver Public Library Special Collections. Although Dorothy HEWER died in the Ganges nursing home, her "usual residence" was 1238 Tattersall Rd., Victoria, BC so check the street directories to see when she last lived there. Island_Directory I checked a couple of years for you: 1951: Island_Directory street directory: 1238 Tattersall: CHESTNUT M V names: CHESNUT Morris V (Agnes) mgr Isl Broadcasting h 1238 Tattersall (surname spelled CHESNUT with no middle 'T' here) 1949 street dir: 1238 Tattersall: CHESTNUT M V I checked CHESNUT's death cert but didn't see any connection to England: Event Date (YYYY-MM-DD):1979-12-29 Event Place: CENTRAL SAANICH Age at Death:79 Person: MORRIS VANDELEUR CHESNUT 4e68-b821-9e0adb854e16 There are 45 people surnamed HEWER in BC land title; 57 BEDELL and 228 FINCH Good luck. Hi All, This is my first foray into Canadian research although I have been researching in England for a long time. Leonard Stanley HEWER was born in Blackheath, Surrey in 1875 and he's living with his parents in the 1881 and 1891 census in Kent. In 1901, I *think* he is in British Columbia [1] lodging with the KELLY family: he stated his birth date as 04 Jul 1875 which is exactly the same as the date I have for him in the 1939 Register in England. I can't find him in the 1911 census either in England or Canada. I have found a Leonard Stanley HEWER in the 1930 electoral register in Abingdon, Berkshire. He would appear to be a lodger with Ellen ROGERS nee WYETH and Dorothy Mary ROGERS - her daughter. I have found these three living together in various other registers for about 25 years until his death in 1952 in Berkshire. Now this is where it gets confusing/interesting ;-) In 1939 he was recorded as 'married' and Dorothy as 'Dorothy M. HEWER' 'single' and both were living with Dorothy's mother, Ellen. And they were both recorded with the surname HEWER until 1949 (the last time I can find them) This would suggest they were married probably in the 1930s but I cannot find any reference to a marriage in England. *However*, while hunting, I found a death of a Dorothea Knightly HEWER in 1955 in Ganges, British Columbia, the widow of Leonard HEWER. She was said to be the daughter of Alfred BEDELL and Emily OAKS born about 1871 in Scotland. And in England there is a marriage of Dorothy Knightly BEDELL and Ernest John FINCH in 1896. Did they emigrate? I can't find them in the 1901 census in England. What happened to Ernest? There's no marriage of Doroth* FINCH in England to HEWER. In 1925, 1926 and 1927 Leonard Stanley HEWER and Knightley Dorothea HEWER are recorded at 12 Box Hill, Abingdon, Berkshire in the electoral registers. In 1928 Leonard is living with the ROGERS family - no Knightley Dorothea in the registers in England. So questions: Did Leonard marry Dorothea Knightly BEDELL/FINCH? When? Where? And then return to England with her? Did she return to British Columbia - probably between 1926 and 1927? Did they have any children? Any help would be most appreciated, Rosemary [1] Subdistrict: Yale & Cariboo, British Columbia, district number: 5, subdistrict number: a-2 [ 01+Census+of+Canada+page+containing+Elizabeth+Kelly]
