Databases available to members of Vancouver Public Library <http://www.vpl.vancouver.bc.ca/extDB/dbListing> It's not particularly well publicized, but the Vancouver Public Library makes a number of searchable databases available to its members via the Internet. All you need to access the databases is your Vancouver Public Library card number and the last four digits of the phone number you gave when you signed up as a member (usually your home phone). The URL above gets you to the Library's sign-in page. There are quite a few databases, but some of the ones of interest to genealogy, along with their descriptions from the site's home page, include (my comments in square brackets): BIOGRAPHY AND GENEALOGY MASTER INDEX Indexes current, readily available reference sources, as well as the most important retrospective works that cover individuals, both living and deceased, from every field of activity and from all areas of the world. [Search for a person's name, and you get a list of specific citations of the publications where that name appears, not the information itself.] CANADIAN ALMANAC AND DIRECTORY  A compilation of approximately 47,000 listings that appear in the print version of the Canadian Almanac & Directory. Includes images, statistical tables and miscellany. CANADIAN BUSINESS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS. CBCA Fulltext Reference and CBCA Fulltext Business provide access to over 200 fulltext Canadian magazines and newspapers and citations to over 750 more. Also includes some U.S. and international publications. CANADIAN NEWSDISC Fulltext articles from Canadian newspapers. [Note that the newest articles are about two months old.] CANCORP FINANCIALS Canadian corporate financial information. Search by company names, ticker symbols, description, officers, SIC codes and more. CONTEMPORARY AUTHORS Find detailed information about authors, including personal data, writings, media adaptations and further readings. EBSCO MAGAZINE ARTICLES On-line full-text magazine articles, summaries or citations ELIBRARY PLUS Full-text articles from magazines, newspapers & reference books. ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BRITISH COLUMBIA The online version of the encyclopedia published by Harbour Publishing. NEW YORK TIMES Full-text articles from January 1999.
