    3. Hello, Local newspapers would likely have carried a story so that is an option available (usually only fee is photocopying). Local schools would also have some records - perhaps year books or pictures of classes. Another church, probably St. Mary's, was built at Cobble Hill in 1916, but by the 1930's had fallen into disuse. In 1965 St. John's became a separate parish. In 1979 it was amalgamated with St. Andrew, Cowichan Station. By 1990 they had become separate parishes.     3. I'm not clear on what information the student wants on this man, but it sounds like it could be an interesting project. Does he want to know about what his life was like, what kind of family he grew up in, what he did for a living til he went to war? Does he want to trace his relations? The family's origins? Or does he just want to get statistics about the man and his family? The first thing to know, is what you WANT to know. Some of the original suggestions are expensive options, either in time or in money, but they are the ones that may give you the most detailed information about a life. And it's the details that bring the story alive.
