John, my family had a summer place right beside Wilcuma Lodge (note spelling)in the late 50's and purchased in the early 60's 5 acres of land that had been a part of the Lodge property. I grow up there so I am *Very* familiar with it. :-) Arthur Lane built the lodge but has/had not lived there for *many many* years. The lodge was designed by Maclure. If you go to http://www.maltwood.uvic.ca/arts-crafts/Wilson.html you will see another Maclure designe dhome and it looks very much like the lodge. It is a wonderfully old building with great gardens which has sadly fallen into major disrepair over the years. In the 1950's the lodge was owned by the Addingtons (SP?) - its had about 12 owners since. It at one time had a pool and a pub and was a nice place to stay. Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra were visitors to the lodge - they liked to fish in Cowichan Bay. The Bay at the time was a fisherman's gold mine - sadly that is no longer the case either. This death record may be worth looking up as it fits: Name:Arthur Edward Cecil Lane Place: Duncan Reg. Number:1947-09-002749 Date:1947 3 2 (Yr/Mo/Day) Age:75 Death Microfilm #: B13193 (GSU # 2032477 If this is him I am sure an obit would have appeared in the Duncan Newspaper - not sure if the Cowichan Leader was around at that time or not. Sorry I can not tell you much more about Mr. Lane or Captain Lane as my mother called him, other than I know the lodge was/is up for sale now and you may be able to find a photo of it on a realtors site. I know there were photos and a bit of it history on it in the Duncan real estate papers this summer. I did a google search and found the website that mentioned the lodge and Captain Lane. The old photos and family names on the web site brought back some great memories of the way things were in The Bay when I was a child. Noted a few items on the web site that may be open to debate. One is the spelling of the lodge name - the other is in regards to new development on what had been the polo field and where the Water Tower home stood. It was just a water tower and not a weird home when I was growing up.:-) I grazed my horses on what I suspect was the polo field. As far back as my family can recall the polo field and water tower belonged to the Lambourne Inn - which was another grand old lodge that burned down in the 60's. If the water tower was once part of Wilcuma it must have been sold off to Lambourne in the very early 1900's as the Lambourne Inn was of the same vintage as Capt. Lane's lodge, if not older. The Lambourne Inn was located on property right beside the lodge - so it may be possible that the two have been confused? If you contact me privately I can give you info on the family who has owned the Lambourne property for as long as I can recall. Some of them still live on part of the property and they may be able to set the record straight in regards to the whether or not the water tower was ever a part of Wilcuma. Carol Thanks for the trip down memory lane! ___________________________ Date: Thu, 18 Nov 2004 20:23:42 -0800 From: "john burns" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Subject: Arthur Lane at Cowichan Does anyone have any information on Arthur Lane a British Remittance man who lived at Cowichan Bay.
