    3. Good Morning Diana, While at the Library yesterday I checked the Hendersons Direcories for the 729 Hamilton Street Address ;the years 1937 - 1938 - 1939 - 1940. 1937 - listed to J. Davies. 1938 - 729 Hamilton Street - - listed to J. Davies - 731 Hamilton Street - listed to J.Davies and Son General Contractors - J. Davies and Central Pntg {painting - printing ??] Co. 1939 - 729 Listed to J. Davies. 1940 -729 Listed to J. Davies. I will be going out to search the hard copies of the directories - rather than the microfilm -much easier - as there is no wait for a reader. and will check again. I did a search for the name A. J. Lidgate - with 0 Lidgate names - also searched Lindgate etc. Will search the hard copies - for the years mentioned - and surrounding time frame. ** 1.If A.J. Lidgate was living in the City in that time frame. - He may have been staying in a rooming house - or hotel in the area. I am going to take a look to see what was on Hamilton Street at the time. In this case - it is quite possible that his name would not be listed in the Henderson or other directory. 1. Unless a person was a permanent resident - they may not be listed , many people moved about - even if A.J. lived at an address for a year - he may not have been in the location when the directory information was taken. 2. Some people living in rooming houses - even permanent residents of hotels - may not have wanted their names listed in the City Directory - it was not compulsory [although some thought it was]. 3. Some people who owned homes - where they may have rented out sleeping rooms [ quite common in those days] may not have given the names of other occupants of the home - other than their own family. perhaps for fear of property tax implications - licensing implications. Is it possible that A.J. Lidgate - could be James Alexander Lidgate - age 85 years - deceased - 1985 - Vancouver ? **** In the early 1940's we had the National Registration of All Canadians - over the age of 16 years. This information is available - the cost $48.15 - returned if no information found. http://www.statcan.ca/english/IPS/Data/93C0006.htm http://www.tbaytel.net/bmartin/natreg.htm Not A.J. - Have you searched the National Archive of Canada - http://www.archives.ca/02/020106_e.html There are 3 Lidgate Surnames listed - Soldiers of WW1. Sorry I couldn't find A.J. - will give it another try.
