Good Morning Liz, I just finished with the Insurance Adjuster - and will be heading out to the Libraries soon. Did you want me to search the newspapers for a possible news story about the house fire at 2767 Turner Street? As well - should I take a look through further City Directories - for Felix C. Lewis ? I am going to Special Collections at the Vancouver Library - to take a look at some pictures - should I see if there is one for the F.C. Lewis and E.A. Hunt Barbers at 237 E. Hastings Street. ** Do you have the Birth Reg for Mabel - the Marriage for Mabel and Felix - and the Marriage for Mabel and Raymond. If not - would you like copies.? Stella sstanger@sfu.ca Member, Canada Census Committee Good Morning Liz, I had planned on getting in touch last night - when I came back from the Library. But - visitors came - and didn't leave till near midnight. I chose a bad time to visit the library - most of the reader - printers were in use. I did manage to get one long enough to search the microfilmed Henderson Directories - I prefer the hard copies found at the N.W. Public Library - and may visit there - for a better look. The film for 1917 - was not on the shelf - and not in the filing box. I will take a look at the hard copy of the Directory. When you mentioned Empress Barber Shop - I thought of theEmpress Hotel on Hastings Street - but of course the address did not match. I Checked the Directory for 2638 E. PENDER Street. - Alfred Parson - residence. I checked the Directory for 2767 TURNER Street - listing - 1915 - Occupied - 1916 - Felix C. Lewis - 1917 film not found 1918 lists Vacant. Felix Lewis - address at 731 Glen Drive - over the years - one year listed at 732 - This Felix Lewis - is listed as helper one year - listed as laborer - all at B.C. Sugar Refining [ This must be the Felix Lewis - listed at the B.C. Govt Vital Events - that you found] The following information conflicts with the information that you have. The East Pender Street address - is in a residential area - all homes. Felix C. LEWIS- is listed in the Hendersons Directory - 1916 - residence 2767. Turner Street. Occupation: Barber - Shop Name: F.C.LEWIS AND E.A. HUNT - Barbers - "237 East Hastings Street - Vancouver. I have checked - there is no listing for Empress Barbers - this shop may have been known - by the location by the Empress Hotel. rather than the actual shop name. *** This is in the Strathcona Area. Just 1/4 block east of Main Street. Corner - Bank - alley way - Empress Hotel {Empress Rooms - ground floor - pub] Hotel Rooms , upstairs.. The old Mount Shasta Cafe - was next to the pub - with the hotel rooms upstairs - since the address of the Barber Shop - the barber shop may have been in the space later occupied by the Shasta - or next to one another. I need to search the Directories again. This area has a poor reputation over the past number of years - although there is a lovely little enclave of very old homes .beautifully kept. A joy to see. At one time - it was a nice multi cultural neighbourhood - the first place that many stayed - while attempting to get established in Vancouver - It is quite possible that Felix may have cut my stepfathers hair - or my uncles etc. HOpe the above is of some help. I will be visiting N.W. Library - and will check the 1917 Directory .
