    1. Mining of Alaska Garnets by B.C. Companies
    2. Trisha Neal
    3. Hello! I am new to the list and apologize for the length of this posting. I am hoping that someone may be able to assist me in finding information about the two companies listed below. I have checked with various museums about the mining companies without success. I am hoping that there may be a mining history expert out there. I have checked with the B.C. Provincial Archives several years ago and they did have the incorporation papers of Western Abrasive Paper Company. That is the only information that they had on file. I have checked recently and no new information was found. This is related to the ALASKA GARNET MINING & MANUFACTURING, CO., operated by a group of women nea Wrangell, Alaska at the mouth of the Stikine RIver. The company was formed in Minneapolis, MN in 1906 and operated until some time after 1925. A link to my web site with information about the ledge and the women is listed below. In 1921, the local newspaper reported that the WESTERN ABRASIVE PAPER COMPANY, Lmt. Victoria, B.C was to ship three tons of garnet form the mine on board the Royal. The stones were to be used in the manufacture of abrasive paper. The news story stated that Anna had arranged the lease for the company. In 1923, the newspaper reported that Miss Durkee and Miss Elmer had been visiting Wrangell again in regards to the garnet mine. The women reportedly had again leased the site to the Canadian company. Canadians connected with the company were Joseph Lawrence NEARof Victoria, John E. BURGESS (he may only have witnessed signatures) and Edwin CONVENTRY who signed as scretary of the company. In 1925, J.G. Shepard of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Geological Survey, surveyed the garnet ledge. According to his report, the ownership of the garnet mine was attributed to Miss Annie Durkee, of Arizona and was under the option to the AKASKA GARNET MINING CO., Ldt., a British Corporation headed by COL. HARRISON, of Victoria, B.C. I have not been able to find out any information on the company. Any assistance would be appreciated. I am more than willing to share my information with family members. I have been researching the women for 25 years and would like to include the British Columbia companies in their story as completely as possible. Thank you for your help!
