    3. Hello All I've recently found out that there was a "Dill's Super Service Station" in Nelson BC. Established in 1927, and located on Victoria St. Is there a directory that someone could look in for me to get me any info at all on this Company? Thank you Pat Gunson Ontario

    3. Pat: (and others who had business-owning ancestors in BC) If you found this information by a search of the BC City Directories, then there isn't more you can find there, unless by searching numerous directories over a period of years, under the name of the business, and also checking for all the people named Dill in the same city. You might be able to trace the business over several years or decades that way, to get a rough history of its existence. There is another source of information on companies, and that is the Dissolved Companies database and microfilmed records at BC Archives. Just leave a request for a lookup in the electronic form on the INQUIRIES page at BC Archives' website. http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/services/inquiry/accescom.htm Be sure to say you are researching family, as there is a charge for companies doing a legal search, but not for us researchers. A few problems that could arise: If there is a file on Dill's Super Service, (not all companies were incorporated and registered) the file is probably too big and too full of repetitive information to bother paying for the whole thing to be photocopied. However, if they find a file, the staff MAY be willing to pick out a couple of pages of information for you, such as the names of the original shareholders, plus some annual reports, say from the beginning, the middle and the end of the period of the company's existence. When they look at the actual file, they will be able to tell you how many years the company existed. Another problem is that the company file may exist only in original paper form, (phoof!- quite dusty these can be!) and it takes a bit of trouble getting the file brought in from off-site storage. Some files are on microfilm, available right in the reference room, and some are still not microfilmed. You won't know which is the case, until the staff look it up. And parts of the looking up process for these particular files can be a bit of a chore! So much so, that some of the staff leave that job to others with more experience. If this appears to be a task that will take over half an hour, the staff will be unable to undertake it for you. But they could at least look up the Dill Super Service to see if it's listed in their Companies computer database, and give you the reference numbers. This would certainly fall into their half hour time limit. Then it would be up to you to find someone to access the file for you, and choose pages to photocopy. (40 or 50 cents a page plus taxes, dozens of pages in most files) Though there is not a lot of personal information in these files, it can be interesting in a family business, because both money and physical assets are listed, details of purchases/sales of assets, changes in the ownership/shareholders, and their addresses. Also, it's another way you may find out what the signature of your ancestor(s) looked like.
