Hello list, Does anyone know this couple. Elsie JEHNNS and Charles William FORD. Thanks to the list and RAOGK I have a death certificate for Charles William FORD. He died Aug. 7th, 1959 in Vancouver. On his death registration his wife is listed as Elsie JEHNNS - residence East 31st Ave, Vancouver. I also have the newspaper obit but it gives very little info on Charles. Still searching for more details on this man - (where he was before Vacouver - relatives etc.) .........................debi

Hi Debi, The questions that come to mind, are: Is there a chance there are living descendants who could tell you more? Have you got information on what happened after his death? Was there a probate file? (at BC Archives) Did he have children? Does his wife's death show up in the deaths index later or possibly is it there under a new (remarried) name so it's hard to find? What does the death registration say about his occupation? What does it say about how long he was in that town, in the province, and in Canada? These can sometimes be clues to where he was before Vancouver. There are occasionally records in BC Archives related to an individual's occupation. Just for example: for those who owned their own business, search the dissolved corprorations records, or sometimes for some government employees, you might find a mention in old BC Sessional papers. And there are specific records such as the 1923 and 1928 teacher's reports from rural communities, that could contain information on people working as teachers in those years. Have you done a search of the Vancouver City Directories already? If the death registration indicates he was in Vancouver for more than a decade, you can get Vancouver city directories for 1948 and earlier, on microfilm, by interlibrary loan. Other than that you need a volunteer to look them up. These tell you a fair bit about a person...occupation and employer changes over time, address changes, sometimes even you can see when the person married, starting in the 1930s when married women were finally listed too, not just single women and widows. And if there were adult children in the home (over about age 18) they would show up as being at the same address, in the city directories. If you can't get much information on him, can't find a probate file, the next thing you might try is the widow's records. Without definite clues to an earlier location, one thing I find you CAN'T do easily is find where in British Columbia the person lived before he arrived in Vancouver... it simply isn't practical to search years of issues of the entire BC City Directories for a name.
