    1. [CAN-BC] Molly Gibson mine and area
    2. Jim Bundy
    3. Hi, These 3 pictures include a picture of several miners who've climbed up on a rock spire on the mountain top, the mine quarters, must be about 8000 ft elevation, and a couple of miners on the mine trail. Question, with that much snow, how did they know where the trail was? :) Just ask if you'd like to see any. Jim

    3. Hello, Lawrence and the listers, I feel I'm kind of butting in here, but as I'm from the Island I couldn't help but do so. Nanaimo was of itself a mining town. I grew up in Qualicum Beach. On Empire Day we often drove south to see my aunt Mabel in Chemainus. As we went through Extension, an area near Cedar, my dad always pointed at a field along the highway. It seems that a farmer was going across it with horse and cart, and they fell right down into an old mineshaft. And of course there was the mine on Newcastle Island. The island is now a marine park, and a very nice one too. So Lawrence it is possible that your mining ancestor worked in Nanaimo also. I wonder if anyone has access to mine employee rosters? It might be another line of enquiry. Regards, Laurence Byers Squamish, BC -----Original Message----- From: can-british-columbia-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:can-british-columbia-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Lawrence Ollier Sent: Sunday, December 31, 2006 10:58 AM To: CAN-BRITISH-COLUMBIA@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CAN-BC] New Lister Peter OLLIER. Hi to Sue, Claudia, Tara, Heather & Malcom. I am responding to you all in this reply if thats OK. First thanks for your responses to my enquiry I was expecting a warm Canadian welcome and was not disapointed, thanks. I live in Cornwall, England but do have fond memories of Canada...when I was a young lad in the 1970's I left Tilbury, UK. on a Polish (Poland) ship heading for Montreal, I was off Gold Mining in the Porcupine Lake (Timmins) area of Ontario..I / we traveled all over Canada and ended up living in Vancouver (Kitsalano) for a couple of years, little did I realise then that I had an ancestor that trod the trail before me! I am 99% certain that the Peter OLLIER in the 1881 Canadian Census is him. His age fits within a couple of years on the Census Record..he is listed as a miner & I have early UK census records of him working in the Quarries in Northen England then he disapears from the UK altogether ie: no marriage record, no more census records and no death record so I think it's him alright. His last sighting was in the UK 1861 census. Now here is the bit that confuses me: The Peter OLLIER that died in Nanaimo V.I. is certainly of the right age...however in the BC voters list of 1875 there are two seperate listings for a Peter OLLIER...the first is for Peter OLLIER of Lightning Creek a Free Miner, the district code is CL which I am almost sure stands for Cariboo / Lightning Creek (as in Barkerville, Wells, Stanley etc) The other listing in the same register for that same year is: Peter OLLIER of Cavan St. Nanaimo, labourer, householder. I am wondering if these two are one of the same ie: worked the Gold Fields and had a house in Nanaimo with the proceeds. Peter OLLIER is also on the Nanaino petion of 1878 also. Have searched the Canadian 1881 Census for a "Nanaimo" Peter OLLIER...nothing has been found. Any comments are welcome. Thanks for reading all of this. BTW Edwin Charles OLLIER death Vancouver...yes he is one of ours he was born in Crewe, Cheshire, England in 1896 have found him crossing the border at Detroit in the 1940's. Best regards to you all. PS would Peter OLLIER have come overland or via sea to the west coast at that time? ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to CAN-BRITISH-COLUMBIA-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    1. [CAN-BC] Molly Gibson Mill, Tram Line and Kitto's Landing
    2. Jim Bundy
    3. Hi, These 3 pictures put all the Molly Gibson operation pieces together. The reference below is the only one I found on the web. Let me know if you'd like to see them. Jim Bundy "At the head of Kokanee Creek was the sky-high, on-again-off-again operation of P.W. George and Bruce White's Molly Gibson Mining Company. In 1900 the outfit reported using an aerial tramway to swing 787 tons of silver ore down from the mine above the tree-line to Kitto's Landing wharf on the Arm from which it was loaded onto barges bound for the smelter at Nelson. In the evening of December 25th, 1902, disaster overtook struck when an avalanche carried away the bunkhouse, killing nine workers. By 1911, writes Major Angus Ward Davis in "The Kootenays in Retrospect" (Kootenay Yesterdays, vol. 3, ed. Edwd. L. Affleck, The Alexander Nicolls Press, Vancouver, 1976), Consolidated Mining and Smelting owned the property upon which sat a crushing mill, the machinery for which had to be dragged via a ten-mile long road from the Arm up to an elevation of 5,000 feet above sea level. From the mine's lowest portal at 6900 feet elevation, a 7,000-foot long aerial tramway delivered ore to the mill. The highest works were at the 8300-foot level."

    3. Some of you may have noticed that while the new 1986 death registrations are now available on line, the 1931 marriages are not yet available. I sent a query and received this reply. Joanne The technical staff are having a problem accessing the records on the new website. They are working on the problem and hope to the search engine working very soon. The exact date is not know at this time. They do understand the urgency of getting access to the year 1931. Your patience is most appreciated at this time.

    3. Jim, I know you've been putting a lot of time into scanning & posting your parents' photos. I just want to assure you that you're doing a good thing. If there are photos that get no immediate response, don't give up. About 3 years after I had posted, about a photo from my Dad's belongings that showed several people at a gathering in Victoria for Electrolux salesmen, I got a request from someone whose grandfather was one of the people pictured & sent her the scan of that photo. The nice thing about our Rootsweb lists is that they are searchable for many years into the future. Pam Pam Fairweather Thomson Sechelt, BC, Canada pthomson@dccnet.com

The second is taken from the mine to the mill below and Lake Kokanee in the far distance. The 3rd one I don't really understand. Its of some miners on a wooden tower of some sort in the mine area. Let me know if you'd like to see them. Jim Bundy

    2. I have asked earlier but maybe a bit more info will help. I found a web site on a google search for Kirk McClelland which showed him in a picture and listed him as working for Landscaping Service Ltd. I know he lived in Nanaimo in the 1980's. I can't find this company listed, although there is a company with part of the name as above. Does anyone know Kirk or of this company? Bonnie in California

    1. [CAN-BC] Yet more Molly Gibson mine pictures
    2. Jim Bundy
    3. Hi, I just scanned another page, with 3 more pictures regarding the above mine. The first one is labeled "on the trail to Molly Gibson". I can see the trail just below the cable for the ore bucket, which also carried people back and forth between the mine up above, and the mill down below. The second [picture shows a bit more of the mine buildings, with some snow. The last one on this page is of my grandparents the year they got married, with Granddad wearing his cook's apron. The miners never gave him any flack, as he was an accomplished boxer. He took boxing (and piano) lessons at St Neots Huntingdonshire England, before moving to North America in 1906 at age 18. Just let me know if you'd like to see any. Jim Bundy

    3. HI, I just scanned another page with photos taken at and about Molly Gibson mine, although one is of my grandparents there taking a break from kitchen work. Man, I still miss Granddad's cooking. He was a great one. He tried owning a small cafe when he was older and a widower in Vancouver, but it failed, mostly due to his own difficult personality I hear. He was always great us grandkids, but then again, I never tried working with him. :) You can see in the picture without snow how the buildings were fit into the hillside, so the frequent avalanches went over the top of them. My grandparents always remembered that roaring noise as the avalanch went right overhead. Let me know if you'd like to see any of these pictures, and I'll send them to you. Jim Bundy

Then there's another picture of the Ross Saskatoon Lumber Co at Waldo, this time in winter. Also, there's a picture of my grandmother with 2 friends swimming in Baynes Lake near Fernie. How did they manage to swim in those suits? :) Finally, a picture of Granddad on the beach at English Bay Vancouver in one of the men's old style swimsuits. Just let me know if you wish to view any.
