So very many folk had cameras of their own by the end of the 1940s/early 1950s, perhaps very few were buying the 'street photographers', by then. Think nearly every family had access to at least one 'Brownie Box Camera', although I'm not clear on when the original first hit the market. My own parents had one and/or a similar style by 1950. Must say though, the 'street' photos are in remarkably good shape; quite similar to the 'postcard' style. Have a hoard of the latter (mostly from the UK) and not a clue as to who any of the folk are ... family we presume due to source .. but who are they?? Toni ~ Ontario

We have 2/3 photos of my Dad, which were taken whilst he was walking along streets, in the business districts of Vancouver/Victoria. He'd been drafted to Pacific Command for 18 months, during (1941/42) WWll, at ages 20/21. I think this was a common practice in many cities. There is also one of my Mum taken in Glasgow Scotland c1944, which is nice as it is the only photo we've seen of her, head to toe, in her WRNS uniform. Plus, we've quite a few photos of several members of my husband's family which were taken as they walked along Marine Parade, Brighton/Hove Sussex England. These latter photos were taken over a period of 15 or so years, 1930s / late 1940s. Husband's sister, cousin and himself at various ages show the photos were taken over several years. Will have to dig them out to see if they do mention who the photographer / studio was. Toni ~ Ontario

    3. Hi Jim, I would love to see the Street Photo. There was another Street Photographer - Foncie *when I was little - He was quite famous - was always there - snapping pictures. Something that probably wouldn't go over today. http://www.vancouverhistory.ca/archives_foncie.htm http://www.cbc.ca/bc/bconnected/archive.html Scroll down See: Also in 1934. http://www.vancouverhistory.ca/chronology1934.htm He had a studio - on Robson near Granville for ? while. Father always like to have his photo's taken - so often bought from Foncie. He took many photo's about the city - most of ours were on Granville Street - from the Bay - to Smythe Street . He took lots of photo's between Robson and Smythe *theatre district. Commodore Ballroom etc. I have a couple of photo's with my beau's - coming from the Commodore.. The Commodore is still there - still in use - for Concerts /Bands etc Vancouver Art Gallery is having an excellent exhibit. http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/story.html?id=02286fd5-d6ab-4c03-aada-e965332b0781 See Phil GRAHAM: ia/1950. 2. hassall
    3. Hi there I am wondering please if anyone can help me if I send an obit. from 1930 in Vancouver as a JPEG if you could help me with a surname in the obit. Everything is crystal clear in the obit except for what looks like as a surviving sister Mrs. J. J. LAPOP of Washington, DC. No one in the family of the subject in the obit. is familiar with LAPOP. I have googled LAPOP and searched for the name on the 1881 census in England, US and Canada plus the free BMD in England, the BMD in BC. I have used soundex on rootsweb and tried the IGI and the 1901 and 1911 census in Canada just to see if the name exists at all. I am hoping I can send the obit. to someone and they will take a look at it and know it instantly. Or perhaps I am dreaming but I must try. thanks so much Best in 2007 Judy

I've found where he lived and died and is buried in Vancouver but would like to find out if he had any descendents here. From cemetery records I think someone with the surname NYDER who lived in Nanoose Bay in 1987 would know. I can't find anyone with the surname Nyder in Canada let alone Nanoose. Does anyone have any suggestions where I could find this Nyder? John

    1. [CAN-BC] South Vancouver property
    2. Jim Bundy
    3. Hi, While my Bundy family was getting established, first at Nelson, and then other locations around the province, interspersed with times in Vancouver, my mother's family, the Ramsays, were getting settled in a much different way in Canada. Oddly enough, both James Ramsay and Marion Davidson Brown had lived in Canada previous to their permanent settlement in 1913. A bunch of Brown families conceived this idea in the early 1880's to create a Scottish Brown settlement in the "outback" of Quebec. My direct Brown family anyway lasted one winter, said they almost all froze to death, and moved back to Scotland. Later, in the first decade of the 1900's, after serving in South Africa, James Ramsay moved to the Vancouver area. In 1910 he even bought a property in "South Vancouver". I don't recall that term in use during my time in the Vancouver area, but maybe I just didn't hear about it living in North Van for the most part. James even bought a piece of property, for $500. The location was described as follows: "in the Municipality of South Vancouver in the Province of British Columbia and known and described as lot number 38 in Block numbered 9 in subdivision of District Lot numbered 394 Group 1 New Westminster District according to a registered map or plan deposited in the Land Registry Office at the City of Vancouver in the Province of British Columbia and numbered 2164" Any ideas on how I could find out where this was located? My Ramsays owned this property till the 1940s, but after living there in 1913, they moved to Capilano in 1914 to their new house, and stayed there from that time on. Jim Bundy

    1. [CAN-BC] last set of photos in this album
    2. Jim Bundy
    3. Hi, This last set has pictures of my grandmother Catherine, and some relatives or girlfriends, probably taken at either England or New York, and then one last picture of the small house at Burquitlam. I'd have to think my grandparents lived at the Burquitlam house, as they photographed it so much. After leaving England, Granddad, who grew up in a farm labour family, and then worked in a shoe factory at Kettering Nothhamptonshire England, sailed to Canada, and then moved to the USA for a while. After working at a steel mill at Detroit, for a time, he worked his way across the USA to Spokane Washington doing farm work. At Spokane, he learned to cook at one of the large hotels there, working with the chefs. By 1911 he was at Salmo, but seems to have missed both the 1910 USA census and the Canada 1911 census. Rats! Anyway, after all that, I can believe that Granddad would fit right in with this rural property at Burquitlam, but they moved on at some point. Jim Bundy
