    1. [CAN-BC] Site(s) to search for parent - WILLIAMSON
    2. Lynn W
    3. Hello fellow Listers, I am new to your list and only embarked on this incredible journey last year. I look forward to the comraderie that seems to prevail throughout the "Lists". Does SKS know of a site(s) where I can start searching for my father? I have checked "parentfind.org" but its focus is on adoption which is not my case. I know virtually nothing about my father. His name is/was "Tommy" WILLIAMSON and he was last known to be living in the Vancouver area, British Columbia, Canada in 1957/58 (which is when I met him, once). My mother was Myrtle Grace VanOENE, DOB 17 SEP 1925, DOD 14 MAY 1999. I believe they were married between 1946 and 1949, possibly living in the Vancouver area. I was told that he left before I was born so have no idea how long they were married. I was born Linda Louise WILLIAMSON on 17 AUG 1949 at St. Paul's Hospital, Vancouver, BC. and was the only child of the marriage. Thanks so much for your help. Any information (even a tidbit) will be muchly appreciated.

    3. When I was in grade 3, (way back in 1949) my family lived in a house at the corner of Parker and Cassiar Streets. The Girls Industrial School was across Cassiar from us, at the corner of Cassiar and whatever street just north of Parker extends to the east towards Boundary Road. Parker Street did not extend east of Cassiar. The house I lived in then was taken down when they widened the road for the Cassiar extension of the freeway. Gordon A. In the 1940s it is said to have had a walkway with park benches and a copper colored door with bars on the door and windows. It was apparently renovated a number of years ago into seniors' housing. Thanks kindly. Cheers, -- Laury Walkey (Miss) BC, Canada

    3. Hi Jim and All. I have a picture of myself and a couple of friends walking down either Pender or Hastings Street, west of Main Street. As near as I can recall it would have been taken about September or October 1961 so the street photographers were still going strong at that time. The occasion was my first trip home on leave from the RCAF, 10 months after first leaving home 17 November 1960. I also have other street photos going back probably 20 years before the one of myself. I can remember getting photographed that way myself as a child, I think near the old Hudson Bay store. This one indicated on the back taken by Movie Snaps, 541 Granville St. Sometimes we bought them, and sometimes we didn't, but enough people must have bought them to keep the place in business for a long time. 3. Hello everyone, This topic has brought back many childhood memories. My family and I lived at 2nd Ave and Cassiar during the late1930's and up to the mid 1940's and I often passed the school on trips to Hastings street with my mother and sister. The school was an imposing white building that faced Cassiar St. There was a lawn and flower beds in front and yes, there were bars on the windows. There was also a vegetable garden and if memory serves me correctly, there was a greenhouse that could be seen from the street. The property did not extend to what you can see from Boundary Rd. today as part of it was still in bush. As others have mentioned, the "bad girls' school" was used as an incentive for good behaviour and my mother often pointed to the top, barred window and said that's where "really bad girls" ended up. While passing the school, we occasionally saw the girls outside on the lawn, performing callesthenic exercises. And some of them were marched past our house on occasion. I used to stand on our fence and wave at them, but they looked straight ahead and never waved back. They wore a blue-grey, belted dress with a white collar and when I saw them up close, I was amazed that they didn't look bad at all and I thought my mother had made it all up. I think that many of them were teenage girls who had been in some trouble but some of them may have just been poor, as these were very difficult times. I never heard it mentioned that the school was a home for unwed mothers but then, this was a topic that was never dicussed. I hope that these teenage girls went on to better and successful lives and I'm pleased that the building has been preserved and is in good used today. And thanks to Stella for her memories of ice cream from the Glenburn dairy. I enjoyed many "triple deckers" that only cost a nickel. The so-called gourmet ice creams of today are no comparison. With best wishes to all, Shirley Gibbard

    3. The City of Vancouver Archives references a Girls' Industrial School at 800 Cassiar St. and has drawings/photos in their library. Seems to me it was turned into a theological college for a time. I remember my uncle being dropped off there when he was training as a United Church minister. Would love to hear more history on this place. Linda

    3. Hi Marv, We have the similar memories - though - Main street is quite a distance from Cassiar street . You possibly had been thinking of Hastings Street instead. Do you remember the street car loop - at Boundary and Hastings. Glenburn Dairy on the Vancouver Side. They had the very best Chocolate Ice Cream. Woodwards Grocery - the Very Best - Our first taste of some International foods -imported by Woodwards - The Luncheonette on the Mezannine floor - sandwiches on their own cheese bread. - Heavenly - Nothing to this day can match it. Best Pumpkin, Strawberry,Blueberry - Mince pies - Great dinners -in the dinning room on the grocery floor. Even my mother would eat there. Shoe Department - with the X Ray machine - I think most shoe stores had these - as well - Wonder what damage they might have done.but it was fun looking at our feet - *Even though my father believed in Sturdy shoes that would last, they looked like boys shoes - when I wanted Ballerina or patent. styles. Feet grow - so couldn't see the need for Sturdy. I still have transit tickets - real keepsakes - some from family - back in the 1920's * Yes - The Bad Girls School - just the idea - kept us good.;-) If I recall - there might have also been a Bad Boys school - at the other end of the site - could be very wrong. I may go for a Very Long Walk - on some unrainy day - just to have a look about. Cheers, Stella At 08:00 PM 04/02/2007, Marv Coulthard wrote: >I remember it too...
