I have a great Aunt that was born in Canada 1909 (during summer work) so I always thought she would be Canadian. They were from Seattle and all other children were born in the States and both parents were US citizens. In the 1920 census I found the family still in Seattle with this child age 10 / born Canada with parenthesis at the end of the line that said (BORN AMERICAN CITIZEN). It might help to find other census years to get her age and place of birth. Washington and Oregon are very easy to find birth information. Star
I would like to thank everyone for the many replies I received. Looks like a lot of good information. Thanks again Lorri
Hi Don, As with everything - our histories - have histories - some we don't know and never will, others - we may change to suit ourselves. Celebreties years ago - did this often. Birth Registrations are available in B.C. in the 121st year after the event. Perhaps Karen - should try the Vital Records for Washington State - Seattle again. Births, Marriages ,Deaths - are much easier to obtain in the U.S. [ or at least were a few years back] The marriage of the parents should be easy to obtain - Should help - to research further ancestry if interested. <snip> Gypsy Rose Lee (also known as Rose Louise Hovick and Louise Hovick) (<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki//wiki/February_9>February 9, <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki//wiki/1911>1911 or <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki//wiki/1914>1914 <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki//wiki/April_26>April 26, <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki//wiki/1970>1970)<snip> http://www.cemeteryguide.com/lee.html Lee was born Rose Louise Hovick on Feb. 9, 1914, in Seattle, WA. Can anyone help her?? -----Original Message----- From: Karen Abbott [mailto:karenabb@comcast.net] Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2007 1:34 PM To: copies@bccopies.ca Subject: birth record question Hi, I'm a writer working on a book for Random House about 1930s burlesque legend Gypsy Rose Lee, and I'm trying to trace her family lineage. Gypsy's real name was Rose Louise Hovick, and it's always been assumed that she was born in Seattle, Washington, USA. (Her sister, Ellen June Hovick, reportedly was born in Vancouver.) However, I recently obtained a copy of Ellen June's birth certificate, which indicates that she was born in Seattle--not Vancouver--and on a date that is frequently cited as Gypsy's birthday. I'm guessing that Gypsy was born out of wedlock, and her mother either didn't report the birth, or went north to deliver the baby in Canada so the neighbors wouldn't talk (hence the Vancouver reference). Ellen June's birthday is recorded as January 8, 1911, and Gypsy was approximately two years older, so I assume she was born in either 1908 or 1909. Is there any way to search for and obtain birth certificates in Vancouver for these years? I'm not quite sure how the system works, but I'd happily hire a local researcher if that would increase my chances of finding birth date information for Rose Louise Hovick. I live in Atlanta, GA, USA, so my ability to search for records myself is obviously limited. Any advice or leads would be greatly appreciated. My number is 678-521-8045. Thanks so much for your time and help. Sincerely, Karen Abbott www.sininthesecondcity.com Hi Karen, Unfortunately the laws in British Columbia don't allow birth records to become public until 110 years after the event. I can't think of any other method to find out, especially if the mother came from Seattle just to have a baby and then return. The census and phone records would be of no help. I am going to forward your email to the BC List and see if anyone there has an idea. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Don (in Vancouver)
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/Test2.jsp?sdid=3767 After I left one province -- I had hoped I would not see this again as we try to finish the three remaining provinces. I have proofread the ONE page that is finished -- and hopefully all will be completed by tomorrow evening. This is a NO-NO in transcribing for the following reason: There might be one or more pages with unreadable writing, but once pages are claimed, the claimant must finish them. I have checked the images -- I know the bad pages already. Muriel M. Davidson Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee

Hi everyone, I spent some time looking at microfilms at the Vancouver Public Library last Friday. I seem to get to "the city" less & less often as I get more settled on the Sunshine Coast. I did get lots of vital stats registrations- all except one which was in 1986 & it didn't seem that they'd received them yet. I found the death of my half 2C2R, Nora Elizabeth Wallace. She married fairly late A second marriage for her husband Ronald St. Clair Carter & I doubt that she had any children. However, if there was an obituary, I'd like to read it. I looked at the films of the Province paper- didn't have time to check the Sun, but I wonder if anyone on the list lives in Mission & would know where the archives for the local paper are. She died on March 31, 1985 & was cremated April 4, 1985 in Hatzic. I'm wondering if it mentions anything about her brother Fraser Melvin WALLACE's family. I have his 1982 obit but wonder where his survivors were by 1985. Pam Thomson Sechelt, BC, Canada pthomson@dccnet.com
To all that sent me messages a big thank you, i'm sorry i did not get back to you as my e-mail sever was acting up and i could not post any messages here. Thank you to you all George in England
Lorri, You didn't indicate which war your GGF served in but I'm guessing you meant the Gt. War (WWI). I would recommend that you join the Rootsweb list titled "GREATWAR" and ask your question there. There are lot of British listers there and I have frequently seem people looking for similar information helped to find sources of "official" papers. Some are even "on-line." There is also a "CAN-WW1" Rootsweb list but I'm guessing the universal one would be of more use to you. If you had any further information about your GGF that you could add to your request to that list i.e., dates, battalion, service numbers, etc. including it would increase your chances of getting better data. Hi to all once more after a long absence, This time I am chasing SHORTELL from Sussex England. I am looking for any family by the name of JOHNSON The mother was Nora SHORTELL who married Carl Johnson and I think they lived in VERMILLION or VERMILION so I am hoping this city is in BC If not could anyone please advise me where it may be Nora was the daughter of Arthur E SHORTELL born in Hastings Sussex, England came to Canada with her parents and siblings Iva, Emily who married Mr W HARDSTAFF, Herbert and from what I can gather Norah is buried in the Mountain View Cemetery with Carl her spouse Time frame I do not know I only know this from the BCCFA web site after me hunting all day plus a lister in Los Angles who put me on the right trail. My question is .. Is there any one who can help me out with details as in Cemetery / burial dates. perhaps photos of the grave and if I can stretch the friendship a death notice as I would very much like to find any cousins on this line as I have been hunting for over 15 years on the SHORTELL names and not finding anything. The Shortell family came to LLOYDMINSTER and from my googling all day it seems that some are buried there. My interest in the family is thru Norah's mother BERTHA NEWNHAM as I am trying to research the family of Newnham which the Nixey fellow was part of and is buried in BC. I hope I have been clear enough if not I can explain in full and I hope that there is anyone who maybe able to help Many thanks Elaine -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Can anyone tell me where I could get an address in England so I can write for some enlistment papers. My Great Grandfather JAMES JACKMAN signed up in England and was sent to Ireland and from there got a medical discharge. I have his discharge papers, not a lot of back ground information on them. Thanks Lorri
Hi Marg and Pamela Thanks for all the information that you sent me. 24hours and I get more information than in the last 5 years. The story behind my request was that George was supposedly "kidnapped" in 1885 and was never seen again by his family. However we have just unearthed his mother's will which stated he lived in BC. So much for family stories!! Now to find the sons. Regards Peter
Hi, I have a George Goff who died 22 July 1921 in Kingsgate, East Kootenay. He worked as a conductor on the railroad from 1903 till 1921. He was buried/cremated in Lethbridge, Alberta on 25th July 1921. Is anyone on the list able to find out if there was a obit published for him. He was born in England in 1879 and had a wife Isabella who survived him. Regards Peter G Hampshire, UK
Hi Peter: I looked on this site to see if there was an obit in the Lethbridge paper for him but didn't find one in this Index: http://www.ourheritage.net/index_page_stuff/Local_History_Links/Obits_to_1959/Obits_to_1959_index.html However, it says on the main page: Please Note: We are now able to find the obituary for anyone buried in Lethbridge for ANY YEAR. If it is not a name or year we have listed, send us the name and approximate time of burial. Grave site photos also available. There is a Lethbridge, Alberta Gene Society: http://lethbridgeags.theboss.net/index.htm I also checked out this site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~abwcobit/ If you find someone on the indexes thru the above site, you go here to look for the newspaper. This site is NOT indexed by surname, is just available to troll through various newspapers by date and name of newspapaer: http://www.ourfutureourpast.ca/newspapr/ The Lethbridge newspapers for the period of his death and burial are on this page: http://www.ourfutureourpast.ca/newspapr/brwsindx.asp?code=niy but as he wasn't listed in the index of the newspaper on the obit site, I doubt he is there. You might want to go thru the pages though, just in case he was missed in the indexing. Hi One of Nancy's first teaching assignments was at Peachland BC. I suppose she met Frank(?) there. Let me know if you'd like to see this one. Would be late 1930's. Jim
Hi, I have a couple of photos including this fellow. If you know him, I'd be happy to share them. This would have been taken in the late 1930's. Jim Bundy
Hi, If anyone might know who he is, I'd be happy to share the photo. Jim Bundy
