    1. [CAN-BC] Post-1901 Census memo: PREPARE FOR THE HOLIDAY!!!
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- Many will have plans for the July 1st holiday -- likely picnics, get-togethers, fireworks -- the joy of getting together. How about packing a few extra sheets of paper? These are the House of Commons and Senate petitions as found at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Petition.htm Both petitions may be signed by the same person -- for non-Canadians, we have the Non-Resident petition. Although the scoreboard has not been updated since May, it will be. There is an increase in the YES or Support numbers -- many more needed. http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index6.htm [Index6_f.htm] We must keep the pressure on - talk to your Members of Parliament -- they may be away from Ottawa -- but you are still a constituent. Please let us know of any notes to them and the replies. I am tabulating the petitions , but keeping these until September. More from Alberta!!!! They are the No. 1 province! Muriel M. 3. Hi Stella and list, I am getting to be reasonably skilled at finding obituaries but they do take a lot longer to look up than BDMs, at least for me. When I go up to Simon Fraser University to get BDM copies for people, I look up obits, if I have the time and energy at the end of my BDM copying. SFU has the major Vancouver papers, as well as the Victoria Times-Colonist and several of the bigger Canadian and US papers and some international ones- New York Times, etc.- on microfilm. I don't have the time to do any lookups in non-BC papers for people, but will try the BC ones, if you give me a death date, and promise to wait patiently! :-) Pam Stella Stanger wrote: > > Hi Maureen, There should be obits in the Victoria papers - The Provincial > Archive will have the papers - Vancouver Public Library also has some of > the Victoria papers - but not all years or issues. There may be some list members who can search Victoria - I don't know anyone other than myself who searches for obits (In Vancouver ) The Provincial Archive should have information. 3. Thanks for all the tips I've been getting. Peter Warren Wentworth Bell who died in 1944 was the eldest son of Peter Warren Wentworth Bell, born 1831, and his wife, Ellen Sarah Dupont. The second son, Jack, was a rugby and hockey player and worked for the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Winnipeg and Dawson City. Did he marry and have a family? A third son, name unknown to me, worked for the Southern Pacific Railway in California. One daughter married a Colonel Pemberton of Victoria. I need their Christian names. A second daughter, Ellen Bell, resided with her mother. Peter W W Bell, Senior, was drowned in the early morning of August 15, 1901 (not about 1915) when the SS Islander was wrecked off Juneau, Alaska. Bell was returning home after a visit to Dawson City and Stewart River, Yukon. Where would I find info re the SS Islander? Thank you. Would there be obits in the Victoria paper(s) of 1901? 3. Hi All, Looking for an obit, or at least the death date, for George McNAUGHT, born 1831, and his wife, Agnes CAMPBELL, born 1833, who both came from Scotland. It is believed they first lived in Ontario, then Manitoba, and finally going to the Vancouver area of British Columbia around 1890. One of their children, Agnes Campbell McNAUGHT, married to Joseph FERGUSON, was living in Vancouver in 1930. Their children, born in Manitoba, were: Ethel, Georgina, Stella, Clifford and John FERGUSON Any information would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Lois McNaught

    3. Hi: The McNaught family (George and Agnes) does not show up in the BC death records, but there are a number of McNaught's listed. If you want to search the database, it is at http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual/governmt/vstats/v_events.htm#indexes The records referred to in this database are available at the BC Archives in Victoria as well as a number of libraries in the province. If you find someone you are interested in, post a request on this group, and someone should be able to look a record up for you. 3. Hi Viola - Was Mr. Bruce from British Columbia ? Where was Mr. Bruce living - at the time he and the maid conceived the child. ( In Prince Albertt Sask) Was Mr. Bruce the employer of the maid. ? Was the child born in B.C. ? What is the connection to B.C.? Has your second cousin obtained her adoption papers - perhaps there is reference to the information you are searching for. You will not be able to gain access to these yourself. Your cousin or a representative will need to do this. If you have not already done so. Perhaps posting your quest to the Saskatchewan Mailing list - may prove more productive. Also posting to the Sask GenWeb - for Prince Albert - may also be of some help. http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/CAN/CAN-SASKATCHEWAN.html http://www.rootsweb.com/~cansk/Saskatchewan/ Go to Queries - post your message.at the location for Prince Albert. Wishing you much luck with your search. Cheers, Stella At 04:42 PM 6/21/01 -0500, Viola Seward wrote: >Hello. A second cousin of mine was illegitimate daughter of man surname >Bruce and the maid. 3. Hi Maureen, The following is the ref. for the Death Registration of Ellen Bell. There will be someone on the list who can copy - or at least obtain some information from this registration for you. I would normally offer - but -I don't drive - we have a transit strike - and I am nursing an injured knee so walking is out of the question at this time. I imagine that there could be an error - some of the registrations are pretty faint - perhaps when copies were made - the date was misread ? When I am able to get around - get a ride - I will take a look at the obituaries - Or - perhaps someone on the list will do the search. The newspapers will be archived at the Provincial Archive in Victoria. U.B.C. also has newspapers - Vancouver Public Library - downtown - also has newspapers on microfilm -not all years covered. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- The Ellen Sarah Bell -died age 71 years in 1911 (aprox birth year 1840 ) listed at Ross Bay Cemetery - was born in Quebec ? - Died in Victoria B.C. Bell - died age 72 years in 1944 - (aprox birth year 1872 )listed at Ross Bay Cemetery - was born in Ontario - died in Victoria B.C. - Burial at Block T -61/62 W. 46 Ellen Sarah Dupont - married - Peter Warren Wentworth 1866, Belleville, Ontario. Is there a Posibility that the Peter Warren W. Bell - born Aprox 1872 deceased 1944 - might be a son - rather than the husband of Sarah ? Only searching the records will tell. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------ DROWNING ACCIDENT: You Mention that Peter Warren Wentworth BELL died in a drowning accident - are you sure that the body was recovered ? Do you know the name of the ship ? ***** If the body was not recovered - there would possibly not be a "Death Registration" as far as I know. (My cousins wife lost a grandfather and then her father in drowning accidents - there was never a death registration issued). There may have been a Coronors Inquest into the drowning.
