    3. I am researching the name BEADNELL with a connection to a Dr John Beadnell, Denman Island, Ferlongly Park, Comox, Sydney areas of B.C. If you know of anyone with this unusual name living in these areas I would like to contact them as they are more then likely my cousins. By the way Ferlongly Park was so named as this is where Dr Beadnell lived prior to living in B.C. Ferlongly is a village near Birmingham, England. I have found on the white pages 6 Beadnells in the B.C. area but there are no e-mail addresses, so I am first trying the short easy route, after that I guess it will have to be snail-mail. A Rosemary Smith contacted me in this connection but believe that she is now working in New York. Needless to say, any help you can give is appreciated with regard to this. Several of the other Listers have very kindly helped me with the research of these people and I do not want to presume on them further, but help in this connection to make the Beadnells aware of my existence would be great. Thank you Gloria Christchurch, England

    3. Hi Shirley, Here's a good page to look at - has all kinds of "worst ever" Canadian stats: http://www.tv.cbc.ca/witness/weather/westories.htm Like: Typhoon Freda Hits B.C.: On October 12, 1962, Typhoon Freda struck the Lower Mainland killing 7 people and causing 10 million in damage. Twenty percent of Stanley Park was flattened as winds gusted at 145 km/hour. Pam Shirley Dumma wrote: > > Does SKS know the date that Typhoon Freda hit the Lower Mainland of B.C.? 1. [CAN-BC] Post 1901 Census - Liberal MPs being dictated to?????
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. In recent times there has been considerable speculation about Liberal Party MPs being dictated to regarding their responses to our requests to support legislation to regain public access to Historic Census Records. Comparison of some letters of response would tend to support this speculation. I invite you to visit the MPs Scoreboard on the Post 1901 Census Project website, at the URL following my signature, and view some of these responses to decide for yourself. Compare the 15 May 2001 response of MP Andy Savoy (New Brunswick -- Tobique-Mactaquac) to the 26 June 2001 response of MP Maria Minna (Ontario -- Beaches-East York). The main portion of the two letters are word for word identical. Compare these two letters with the 15 December 2000 News Release of Industry Minister Brian Tobin (available through a link on the Post 1901 Census Project website) wherein he rejects the Report of the Expert Panel on Access to Historic Census Records, stating that "further broad based discussion with all Canadians" is required. Decide for yourself if Liberal Party MPs are being dictated to regarding how they respond to our questions. Most of the wording of this News Release is identical to that on information sheets provided MPs by Statistics Canada. It is my personal opinion that Mr. Tobin is taking his direction regarding public access to Historic Census Records from Chief Statistician, Dr. Ivan Fellegi, rather than the other way around. It is my further opinion that Mr. Tobin's News Release was likely written by Dr. Fellegi, who actively opposes public access to these records. Most people likely vote for their elected representatives because they feel they are reasonably intelligent individuals, having positions on issues similar to their own, and being capable of individual thought. It would appear that at least some MPs are incapable of individual thought and are allowing themselves to be dictated to in how they respond to our questions. How does your MP rate? Does he/she think for themselves -- or do they take direction from above?? Contact him/her and find out! Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. [CAN-BC] "Mr BC 1927" - George Jones, 571 Beattie Street, Vancouver and some other questions
    2. Taryn Jones
    3. Hello everyone Strange question coming up - my gg uncle, George Jones, (to quote from an article about his death) "Physical culture was always his prime interest and his body was superbly conditioned. In 1927, at the age of 54, he entered the first contest to choose B.C.'s most perfectly developed man and won it." Is it possible to find out more about the 1927 Mr BC Contest? Are there any photos? Do I really want to see my gg uncle at age 54 in a strong man competition? :-) It also said that he was the president, then secretary-treasurer of the Masseurs' Society. Can I find out anything on this group? George worked wife my gr grandfather, (his brother) Charles Jones, as a blacksmith at 571 Beatty Street in Vancouver, when they first came here at the turn of the century. Are there any old photographs out there of the shop? Does anyone have information on the "Jones Institute of Physical Culture"? You guessed it - he founded it. As a side-note, George was quite a character. To quote again from the article from the June 26 1952 issue of the Province, "...many other interests included golf, horses, concert singing (he was from Wales! ;-) ), wrestling, oil and gold mining and sailing in his four cabin cruisers." "....he owned the first hansom cab in BC, which he drove regularly around Stanley Park." Thanks in Advance Taryn Jones Victoria

    1. [CAN-BC] Post-1901 Memo:- Let's Get Rid of the BLUE ????
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- We all have a part in the election of a Member of Parliament -- who should be listening to desires of his/her constituents. This does not always happen, as evidenced by the Census Scoreboard symbols. Some Members of Parliament have not been able to write since April 1999 when Global Genealogy sent the first letters. Many have contacted them -- and it my hope we do not see even ONE Blue ??? by Sept. 19th, when Parliament resumes. http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index6.htm There is a very definite question printed there -- one may Copy and Paste this into a memo to YOUR Member of Parliament. The chart will show how many have said YES -- click on the province, and right now Saskatchewan is leading the way -- when the chart is updated, there will be No Blue ? -- only one Green Fence Sitter. Lobby the Members of Parliament, write to them, visit them in their own home riding where they were re-elected. Please copy me in using the BCC method or send it direct to Gordon Watts so he is able to update the scoreboard. <gordon_watts@telus.net> Above all -- the Member of Parliament is supposed to be listening to his or her constituents. 3. Hi Kim, The following are some newspapers that cover the Lumby Area. Perhaps contacting them would be of help. http://www.northokanagan.org/r_medi.htm There is an e mail address for the Lumby Valley Times - whether they carry obits ? - but I am sure that they would probably be able to help. http://www.monashee.com/lvt/index.html I will check the Vancouver Province ( Sunday Edition) in the morning - and the Vancouver Sun on Monday Morning. Will get back to you if I find the obit. It is quite possible that there will not be an obit published in the Vancouver papers - if there were no family and friends that would need to be notified. A suggestion: Please check the newspapers in your area - in many cases when there are out of town family and friends - there is a request made for newspapers in those areas to copy the obit . 3. Hi Kim, My condolences to your sons and you. I looked in the online notices from yesterday and today's major Vancouver papers but don't see it yet. If you check for the next couple of days, you should catch it. http://www.classifiedsbc.com/classifiedsbc/categories-announcements.html They don't have them archived, so you need to look each day. Maybe the local paper in the Lumby area of the Okanagan will have an article. I hope one of our list members can help with this for you.
