    1. [CAN-BC] BC Archives - IGI - batch numbers information and reference
    2. Dennice Goudie
    3. http://www2.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/cgi-bin/www2vsd (change the last letter to d for death, m for marriage, b for birth) to do a search of BC Vital Statistics for the information you seek (dates depend on what type of information because of privacy act) Now that you have that information - registrations usually contain the most information. Also note the GSU Microfilm Number (which is how FHC (Latter Day Saints aka Mormon Family History Centres) record the exact same information). You can locate the FHC nearest you by http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp Once you have done that you can contact FHC to take a quick lesson on how to use their equipment, then they will order the microfiche which contatins the information. Volunteer run, minimal to no costs and at times, patience is a virtue we must practise incessantly. Most of all, any and all methods of research require that we spend time and/or money to check the veracity of all recorded information.. even parish records had transcription errors. OR you can pay BC Archives $25 - $50 for EACH copy OR you can post to various lists CAN-BRITISH-COLUMBIA-L@rootsweb.com (pop -REQUEST after the L if you are not already subscribed and you, as I have, may find SKS (some kind soul) who has easier access to information and will share it with you offlist (so far, I have received 20+ copies of various registrations which gave me more leads and members of family I did not know existed) For a bare beginning on extended family research: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_I GI.asp (note: the above is to be entered into your browser as ONE line) International Genealogical Index is 'usually' more reliable then others such as 'ancestral' files which could be wishful thinking. IGI is, generally, Parish Records entered by volunteers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. (note Batch Numbers, Microfilm #, any little bits of information and record all) When you have a few leads: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp (note: the above is to be entered into your browser as ONE line) For a Family History Centre (FHC) nearest you Rather than key in.. I will quote SKS who sent me this privately: (thank you, you know who :-) First of all, there are two kinds of records in the IGI--those from controlled extractions and those from private submissions. However, one can easily tell which is which. When you see an individual record with a batch number (bottom left of the record) consisting of six letters preceded by either of the letters C, J or K, you have a baptism taken from a controlled extraction. Six digits preceded by the letter M or E indicate marriages from controlled extractions. Six digits preceded by P indicates that the record is from transcripts of the PRs. Beware of six digits preceded by the letters A or F--these are private submissions. Similarly, a batch number consisting of a string of numbers without a preceding letter are also private submissions. Just a film number will also likely be a private sub. Beware of all births and deaths found in the IGI--parish records weren't usually concerned with births and deaths. The occasional rector did note these but only attached to baptisms and burials. Beware of any bit of information that is bracketed thus < >. These are 'guestimates' and one will see names, dates and places with this designation. You may know that if church members found a marriage for a couple but not their baptisms, they were permitted to subtract 25 years from the marriage date to arrive at a probable birth date for the male, 21 years for the female. (You do that a couple of times in succession, and you can end up very wrong indeed!) Be very wary of anything that you find in the Ancestral File--very dodgy. Likewise with those new pedigree files that are now on line. Now, once you have a 'controlled extraction' batch number attached to a surname you're interested in, you look for more of the name in that place. Make sure you're in the IGI. Type in just the surname. Ignore first names at this point, and parents' names. Fill in the three 'location' fields, then type in your batch number in the appropriate place. Press Search. If there are more with your surname there, you should see them now. There's a good trick that you can do at this point to see if there are any more. If the church is a very large one or of a very old foundation, there may well be more of your people in those records. To get at them, try changing the last digit of your batch number from, say, 1 to 2, then to 3, etc. This should get you more of your people if they are in there. (Some churches were so old and large--some of the ancient city churches, for instance--that more than one series of batch numbers have been necessary--see the end of this for the URL for finding batch numbers.) Now using that same batch number but changing the initial letter to M, do the same thing all over again--this should bring you the marriages. Baptisms will give you the names of parents or, in the earlier records, just the father's name. Marriages will give you the name of the spouse. (You can then start looking for those wives and mothers!) If you find a set of likely parents, you can now utilize the IGI criteria page to see if those parents had more children--some could show up in a contiguous parish, for instance. Ignore the 'personal' name fields, fill in the father's name, first and last, and the mother's first name only. Fill in the location boxes, and press Search. (If you get too specific about filling in some of these fields, you'll may only get what you ask for and might miss records where a father's middle name has been omitted from the original record. Rectors could be notoriously sloppy at times.) You can also use the year and year range filter if you're looking for a specific person. To find out if a particular church you're interested in has had its records included in the IGI, you can go to this site and find out: www.geocities.com/Heartland/Trail/8333/index4.html Here you'll find a list of counties, then an alphabetical list of all places/parishes within that county which have batch numbers and, of course, the numbers. Remember that there are records of thousands of parishes in Salt Lake City that have not yet made it into the IGI and you can find these in the Fam. Hist. Lib. Catalog. Remember, too, that you only get baptisms and marriages. One researcher sent me a lovely pedigree tracking one of my lines back to the 16th century but had not looked at the film of the PRs and half of the pedigree depended on someone who had died as an infant! Eventually, one has to look at the film of the PRs to find out who actually survived and thus lived to become an ancestor."

    1. [CAN-BC] Post 1901 Census - Access to Information Requests
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings all. Attempts to informally obtain responses from Brian Tobin and Anne McLellan giving clarification of Brian Tobin's announced "broad based discussions with all Canadians" regarding public access of Historic Census Records have been abysmal failures. Neither response, nor acknowledgement of receipt of correspondence has been forthcoming. This afternoon I mailed two Access to Information Requests -- one to Statistics Canada for Brian Tobin, and one to the Department of Justice for Anne McLellan. I copy below the text of the ATI request to Statistics Canada. The request to the Department of Justice, while worded differently, seeks the same information. These requests were sent via Canada Post's ExpressPost and should be received no later than Tuesday next week. The respective departments have 30 days from the date of receipt to respond. We await that response with great interest and anticipation. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Watts gordon_watts@telus.net Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC http://globalgenealogy.com/Census en francais http://globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index_f.htm ======================================= 10 August 2001 ATIP Coordinator Statistics Canada Pamela White R.H. Coats Bldg., 25-B Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0T6 Ms White. The Honourable Brian Tobin, Minister of Industry, and Minister Responsible for Statistics Canada, on 15 December 2000, released to the public the Report of the Expert Panel on Access to Historic Census Records commissioned by his predecessor, the Honourable John Manley. He did so on Day 89 of the 90-day period within which he was required by law to do so because of an Access to Information Request made by myself. In making the Report of the Expert Panel public, Mr. Tobin at the same time dismissed the recommendations contained therein, and issued a News Release stating: ". further broad based consultation with all Canadians is needed. This consultation will take place as part of the already announced administrative and legislative review of the Access to Information and the Privacy Acts." On 26 March 2001 your correspondent took part in roundtable discussions conducted under the auspices of the Access to Information Act Review Task Force. This is the body charged with undertaking the "already announced administrative and legislative review of the Access to Information .Act." At the end of the day, those of us whose primary interest was in regaining public access to Historic Census records were pulled aside by observing members of the ATIA Review Task Force. We were advised that perhaps the ATIA Review was not the best route to take to achieve that goal. We were further advised: * Not to expect much to be said about public access to Historic Census Records in the Final Report of the ATI Act Review Task Force. * A review of, and recommendations regarding, public access to Historic Census Records did not form a part of the mandate of the ATI Act Review Task Force. * Members of the ATI Act Review Task Force had never been advised that a review of, and subsequent recommendations relating to, public access of Historic Census Records should be considered by them. * A review of the Privacy Act was not, and has never been, a part of the mandate of the ATI Act Review Task Force. This advice, coming from observing members of the ATIA Review Task Force, is obviously at odds with the statement contained in the 15 December 2000 News Release of Mr. Tobin. On 26 March 2001 I directed an email to Mr. Tobin advising him what we had been told by observing members of the ATIA Review Task Force. I made a number of points and asked some questions, requesting a personal response from Mr. Tobin that would clarify the situation. On 29 April 2001 I directed another message to Mr. Tobin. It was sent via email, fax, and Canada Post. This message requested a response to my first email as well as other information relating to the "broad based consultation with all Canadians" announced by Mr. Tobin. I again requested a personal response from Mr. Tobin. To date, now approaching five months since sending my original message regarding this subject (26 march 2001), Mr. Tobin has neither responded to my stated concerns, nor has he or his staff had the courtesy to even acknowledge receipt of them. On 2 June 2001, following a number of long distance telephone calls to the Office of the Minister, I sent a third email message requesting responses from, or at least acknowledgement of receipt, of the previous two messages. Some ten days later I received an acknowledgement of this message from Mr. Paul Parent, A/Manager, Executive Correspondence and Records. This acknowledgement did not respond to the concerns expressed in the previous letters. It simply stated: "On behalf of the Honourable Brian Tobin, we wish to acknowledge receipt of your recent Internet message. Minister Tobin appreciates receiving your correspondence." I quite frankly doubt that Minister Tobin "appreciates" receiving my correspondence. It is doubtful that he has even seen, or been advised of it. It is obvious that I will likely not, via informal requests, receive any response to my concerns relating to the announced "further broad based consultations with all Canadians" in regards public access to Historic Census Records. This letter, therefore, is to be considered a formal Request for Information under Access to Information legislation. I have enclosed herein a check for the requisite fee for such a Request. In relation to the above I seek to obtain any and all documentation, including email, letters, memoranda, notes about conversations, or other, between Brian Tobin as Minister of Industry or his staff, and; Anne McLellan -- Minister of Justice or her staff, employees of Justice Canada, Dr. Ivan Fellegi -- Chief Statistician of Canada, employees of Statistics Canada, The Honourable Lucienne Robillard -- President of the Treasury Board of Canada, Madame Andrée Delagrave - Chair of the ATIA Review Task Force, members of that Task Force, and/or any other bodies or persons; relating to any public consultations and/or review of public access to Historic Census Records and recommendations regarding the various legislation pertaining thereto, in particular the Access to Information Act. I further seek any and all similar documentation between the above individuals, and any other bodies or persons, relating to any similar review of the Privacy Act. I seek specifically to be advised as to where, when, and by whom "further broad based discussions with all Canadians" relating to public access of Historic Census Records have been, or are to be, held. I further seek to be advised as to when the results of any such "discussions" will be made known to the public. I seek the truth. This ATI Request has been directed to Statistics Canada. It is expected that, as per the ATI Act, should another department, or departments, be better able to fulfill my request, it shall be so directed to that other department or departments. A request similar to this one has been directed to Justice Canada and the Minister thereof, the Honourable Anne McLellan. Thank you. Gordon A. Watts, Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee

    1. [CAN-BC] Post 1901 Census Project Website updated.
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. Just a short note to advise that recent updates to the Post 1901 Census Project website have just been loaded. They include links to extracts of several media reports not previously shown, and many more links to other websites having information relating to Census. If you have submitted a request for a reciprocal link to your website, and it is not included with this update, please contact me again regarding this. MPs and Senators Scoreboards and Correspondence Logs have been updated and more to come. Please copy your letters to MPs and Senators, and more importantly their responses, to me so that they can be added to the Correspondence Logs and the Scoreboards updated. Also added, on the Petitions page, is a colourful letter sized poster, in PDF format, that has been developed for use with Post 1901 Census Petitions. Download and distribute it freely wherever petitions have been posted. Petitions continue to come in almost daily. These are very important to demonstrate to the government that the people of Canada wish to regain public access to Historic Census Records. Please continue to collect signatures on these petitions. The next batches of petitions will be sent in about the time Parliament reconvenes in September. The interest and support of all is appreciated. With your assistance we will achieve our goal of regaining public access to Historic Census Records. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. [CAN-BC] Valentine and Chesworth (previously of Ashton In Makerfield, England)
    2. I am new to the list and wondered if there was anyone who could help either find any surviving relatives or help with details of death certificates please. I have only just discovered that Richard Valentine and his sister, Mary Jane Chesworth, (husband Peter) went to live in Victoria from Cape Breton (date unknown). Richard and Mary Jane Chesworth (along with other members of their family) originally emigrated from Ashton In Makerfield, Wigan, Lancashire, England around 1904 to Cape Breton. Joseph Valentine (Richard's brother) settled and died in Cape Breton. A chance remark by someone in England has now led me to Victoria, B.C. As directed on the new subscribers acknowledgement, I looked online at the British Columbia Vital Records and have been very pleased to obtain the following information. Would it be possible please, for someone to let me know what is recorded on their death certificates. Although Richard V., Mary Jane and Peter Chesworth are our main concerns, I made a note of all the Chesworth's on the Vital Records in the hope that they may be their descendants. I do know that Ernest Chesworth was their son. I hope that what I am asking for is not too onerous a task for someone. I would be extremely grateful for any help. 3. You will find your Munsie family on the BC Archives site at http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual/governmt/vstats/v_events.htm There are twelve Munsie's in the death index plus you can do a search for their spouses as well. If you need any death certificates, there are a couple really helpful ladies on this list who will get them for you, if you ask nicely. <vbg> Good luck. - Karen ----- Original Message ----- From: Earl MacIntosh <macbridge@ns.sympatico.ca> To: <CAN-BRITISH-COLUMBIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 05, 2001 3:59 AM Subject: [CAN-BC] Munsie > Hi, > I'm new to the list and am looking for information and/or decendents of > William McGillivray MUNSIE and Catherine "Kate" DUNN.
