Does any one have access to Mt. View Cemetery records? I just received the death registration of James Henry MACGILL who died 19 Jan 1939, and it indicates he was buried at what I think says Mt. View Cemetery. The only information I have on his wife, Helem Emma Gregory is b. 1864 Hamilton ON d. 1947. I am wondering if she was buried with her husband and some of this information might be available on the gravemarker or in the cemetery records. I cannot find her in the B.C. death indexes. Greetings All. After being away from the house since early this morning I came home to an email message from the Office of Senator Lorna Milne. The purpose of the message was to advise that the Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology has tentatively scheduled hearings on Senator Milne's Bill S-12 for either 19 or 20 September 2001. Senator Milne has asked that I appear before the Committee to testify in support of Bill S-12. Bill S-12 is identical to MP Murray Calder's Bill C-312 and, if passed by the Senate and the House of Commons without significant change, would satisfy our concerns for public access to Post 1901 Census Records. It expressly authorizes the transfer of all census records from Statistics Canada to the National Archives of Canada for permanent safekeeping. It gives access to the records to genealogists and other researchers 92 years after the census, subject to a privacy right it creates that allows individuals to object to the disclosure of personal information in the census records. For those interested in reading it, there is a link to Bill S-12 provided on the 'Other Sites' page of the Post 1901 Census Project website located at the URL following my signature. Happy Hunting. Recent orbits sent to me by a member of the list, re VALENTINE and CHESWORTHs who emigrated to Victoria from England around 1907, has given me the following relatives. I would be pleased to hear from anyone on the list who might be researching any of these names. Hoyt Wright Chesworth Wood McLellan Knowles Barbara Colquitt, Ashton In Makerfield Wigan, Lancs, England.
The orbit for Richard VALENTINE, who died 1948, late of Tranquille and Vancouver, BC, and who had been a resident of Ladysmith and Extension for many years, states that he was a member of St. John's Lodge A.F. & A.M. G.R.B.C. No. 21 of Ladysmith, also Kamloops Chapter No. 18 Royal Arch Mason. A friend of mine in New Brunswick has pointed out that Ladysmith is about 50 miles north of Victoria; Kamloops hundreds of miles away in the interior of the mainland part of the province. He says it raises an interesting question as to why he was a member of lodges so far from Victoria. Is anyone able to answer this question please? Also would I be able to contact anyone over any records that may have been kept by these lodges? Last, but not least, are there any websites for these lodges please? Barbara Colquitt Ashton In Makerfield, Wigan, Lancs, England.
A very kind person on the list sent me the obit for Mary Jane CHESWORTH, who lived in Victoria, but was previously of Ashton In Makerfield, Wigan, Lancashire, England. Apparently she suffered fatal injuries through a car and train accident at Colwood Crossing and died in August 1937. It is mentioned that "Worthy matron and officers of the Order of Eastern Star, Victoria Chapter No. 17, conducted their service at the funeral parlors before the remains were removed to the church". Is someone able to give me more information on this Order please? Barbara Colquitt, Wigan, Lancs, England.
Travel, for those with vehicles, to Ladysmith from Victoria is like a stroll in the park (once one is on the Island Highway, one either travels North or South) An explanation as to why there was membership in both Kamloops and Ladysmith is likely to be found at the second link. The idea of anyone travelling distances on British Columbia's highways is not uncommon. I've driven to the westcoast of Vancouver Island (Tofino) from the eastcoast of Vancouver Island to have a cup of coffee at Pacific Rim Park's Long Beach. I know of persons who travel that same distance repeatedly in a 24 hour period for various reasons (uncommon) or live in or around Nanaimo (Extension is just south of Nanaimo), Ladysmith or Lake Cowichan and commute to work in Victoria or Vancouver (given the price of housing in the metropolitan areas this often makes econimic sense) St. John's Lodge A.F. & A.M - Ladysmith http://ibnd.com/masons/ "Councils of Royal and Select Masters meet in Victoria, Courtenay, Ladysmith, Kamloops, Creston, Vancouver, North Vancouver, Langley and Chilliwack" http://www.grandchapter-bc-yukon.ca/Further_Light.htm Lists Chapters http://www.grandchapter-bc-yukon.ca/chapters.htm Regards, Dennice researching: Brulè, Poirier, McFadden, Stephens, Michelsen, French, Brooks, Brown, Goudie, Vautrin http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~goudied/ > The orbit for Richard VALENTINE, who died 1948, late of Tranquille and > Vancouver, BC, and who had been a resident of Ladysmith and Extension for > many years, states that he was a member of St. John's Lodge A.F. & A.M. > G.R.B.C. About Tranquille which is close to Kamloops BC: If anyone was said to be "late of Tranquille" you can be fairly sure they were a patient at the Tuberculosis hospital there. You will find information on that hospital online. Patients lived at Tranquille for long periods, undergoing treatment (there was even a school there) so it doesn't surprise me that R. Valentine's obit indicates he had joined the Kamloops chapter of his lodge too. He may have once lived at Ladysmith, and first joined the order while there. City Directories are available up to the year 1948 for all BC cities, so you could trace his time in each place. The book written on Tranquille's history is called A Whole Little City by Itself. Here's one website that tells about the place. (Wayne Norton is author) http://www.cariboo.bc.ca/news/Pastnov26/Tranqll.html Information about the book "Whole Little City by Itself" is included on this page: http://www.sonotek.com/plateau.html Although BC Archives holds records from this hospital (long closed), any patient records could be under restricted access for many years yet because of the privacy laws. Richard Valentine's death registration (on microfilm) should give the cause of death. Shannah: What number are you looking for exactly? Was your father in the Air Force post-integration(1968)? Called Canadian Armed Forces (Air) or was he with the RCAF? If your father was in the Air Force(RCAF) he would not be in a regiment. That is Army terminology. If your father worked as a navigator, pilot or related operational trade(ie:airframe mechanic) he would be attached to a squadron. Squadrons are numbered. These numbers sometimes change with the different role of a squadron, but sqn.histories online show the timeline and number changes. If he was a driver, fireman or a support person, he would be in a 'section'. Pre-integration a base was called an RCAF Station. Many (stations) are represented on the internet. Do you know where he served? If he was in the Air Force post integration, he could be attached to an Army base or serve on a ship ! WW RCAF ArchiviaNet the search engine for Canada's Archives gives data on veterans of the 1st & 2nd WW's. RCAF ID number,CAF ID numbers, Regiment and/or Squadron numbers are not private information. With a few more clues, I could perhaps point you in the right direction. Penny
