    1. [CAN-BC] Interest new development for British 1901 census--YIPPEEE!!!
    2. S. Griggs
    3. Hello, Everyone! Knowing you all would be VERY interested in this, I thought I would post it to you all! Subject: [CLARE] Interest new development for British 1901 census Isn't this great news! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PRO Announces Plan to Put 1901 British Census Online ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Public Record Office has announced that after months of painstaking work, the 1901 Census returns for England and Wales will be available online over the Internet. This huge task of digitizing the original census images and creating an index to 32 million names is the result of a partnership between the Public Record Office and QinetiQ (formerly the larger part of the Defense Evaluation and Research Agency) and is a major step towards the Public Record Office's vision of putting records online to reach a wider audience worldwide. From 2 January 2002, visitors to the 1901 Census Web site will be able to search the index by name, place, address, institution or vessel, free of charge. Once the desired subject is found, for a small charge visitors can view a digital image of the original census return and the transcribed details for an individual or order a copy of either. The feedback from the successful operation of a pilot project using the 1891 Census returns has allowed us to develop this technology to make it more user-friendly. Full details of how the census will work, including the cost, can be found at http://www.census.pro.gov.uk Some of the statistics from the census, taken on 31 March 1901: the population was 32,527,843. The population breakdown was 52% women to 48% men, and the density of population was 558 per square mile -- compared to 152 per square mile in 1801. Of the total population 1.04% were born in foreign countries, compared to 0.67% in 1881 and 0.8% in 1891. Comparable statistics for England and Wales in 1999 show a population of 52.7 million, and a split of 49% male to 51% female. The population density was 349 per square kilometer -- around 900 per square mile. Ethnic minority groups made up 6.4% of the overall UK population (although changes in definition since 1901 make this measurement a less accurate comparison). Censuses containing personal information on individuals have been taken every 10 years since 1841, and, because they contain personal information, are subject to closure for 100 years. The Public Record Office holds census returns for England, Wales, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA, listowner http://www.connorsgenealogy.com ==== IRL-CLARE Mailing List ==== Make connections.....list your surnames in the County Clare Roster http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/clare/claresurnames.html

    3. Hi All I am just new to this list, and was wondering if it might be possible to have someone do a couple of lookups for me. They are both pertaining to the same person. I would like to get a copy of the death registration for Jessie Alexander Hope died December 30, 1970 in Vancouver. I have already looked at the index to Vital Records in B.C. ,and I found the registration # 1970-09-017537. The LDS film # is 2034215, and the BC archives # is B13307. I would also like to get a copy of the obituary for Jessie Alexander Hope if there is one. If someone can look these up for me, and get me copies I would be willing to pay for copying, and postage. 2. Kennedy Bible I would be interested to know if the Kennedy's in the Bible were from Cork or Queenstown Ireland. I started to write the names but the male names are the usual Daniel, James, John etc. Ladies were Bridget, Sarah etc. My Kennedy's settled in upstate NY. We did have people arrive in Canada before coming to US. I'm told it was less expensive trip and not as difficult to get through immigration. Thanks in advance Joanne jhm12345@aol.com

    3. Hi, I've heard from several people today and wanted to add a bit more about Riverview/Essondale. Crease Clinic was one place where people were treated. Here's something from the BC Archives site: The Crease Clinic of Psychological Medicine was established in 1949 as an acute care facility. It was situated at Essondale, adjacent to the Provincial Mental Hospital. In 1964 the Provincial Mental Hospital at Essondale and the Crease Clinic were combined to function as one mental health facility, Riverview Hospital. The elderly were often in Valleyview Hospital which was also on the Riverview grounds. I can't see any web pages which deal specifically with these areas. 3. Hi Patricia, Print of the ship Duchess of Athol: http://www.kinshipsprints.com/catalog/ships/d/duchatholl.htm Fairbridge School: A Very Interesting Article about Fairbridge School- includes Picture : http://fairbridge.ca/fb-newsletter1.htm The following - may allow you to find some information - perhaps contact persons who knew your mother at Fairbridge Farm School. Well worth a try. http://fairbridge.ca/index.html Further info perhaps of interest: http://www.parliament.the-stationery-office.co.uk/pa/cm199798/cmselect/cmhea lth/755/755ap24.htm Please contact the British Columbia Provincial Archives: http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/cgi-bin/text2html/finding/government/.ms_cat /MS-2045.txt?MS-2045 http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/cgi-bin/text2html/finding/government/.ms_cat /MS-2121.txt?MS-2121 http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/cgi-bin/text2html/finding/government/.ms_cat /MS-2465.txt?MS-2465 http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/cgi-bin/text2html/finding/government/.ms_cat /MS-2444.txt?MS-2444 Middlemore Home: John Middlemore opened his emigration homes in St Lukes Road, Selly Oak, in 1872 as a charitable institution for homeless and deprived children from the overcrowded slums of Birmingham. Boys and girls were admitted to the homes up to about the age of 13. After a short period of training they were taken to Canada and settled with families, either as servants or as adopted children. 1.Your mother was sent to Canada September 9, 1938 and was placed at the Prince of Wales Fairbridge Farm School. How old was your mother when she was sent to Canada? Do you know how long your mother stayed at the Prince of Wales Fairbridge Farm School. Do you know if your mother had her son - while still at the Fairbridge Farm School ? there may be something recorded in their files - although this would be privileged information. Perhaps the hospital where the birth took place - may still have records ? Do you have any information - that might lead you to the childs fathers surname ? Was your mothers name at the time Betty Doreen PALSER at the time ? Was Betty her given name . Or was her name Elizabeth, or ? Did your mother stay in Canada - Marry in Canada - or return to the U.K.? Have you searched other documents that might be available - for possible clues. Diaries etc that might hold a clue to the child. The following is a list of children who arrived in Canada in 1935 - Called the Fairbridge Children - all were destined to stay at Fairbridge Farm School - Cowichan Station. These Children also arrived in Canada aboard the Duchess of Athol - arriving at the ports of Halifax and Montreal. http://dcs1.uwaterloo.ca/~marj/genealogy/children/lists/fairbridge.html http://ist.uwaterloo.ca/~marj/genealogy/children/Organizations/fairbridge.html You might want to contact the National Archive in Ottawa - for information that they might hold: The Central Registry Files of our Immigration Branch records (Record Group 76, B 1 a) contain correspondence from various sending organizations. They include annual reports, information booklets and some lists of names of children sent to Canada.. The files cover the years 1892 to approximately 1946. To obtain volume, file and microfilm reel numbers, please consult our database for Records created by departments and agencies of the Federal Government. Select Record Group 76 (Immigration) and use the name of the sending organization as a keyword, for example Barnardo$. To read more about Home Children, you may wish to visit the Young Immigrants to Canada web site. There you will find information about various homes and organizations, reunions, titles of books on the subject and some lists of children's names. You might want to contact the Provincial Archive of British Columbia in Victoria BC - address will be found at the following. http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/cgi-bin/text2html/library/.data/NW_971.63_O4 4f.txt?NW_971.63_O44f http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/cgi-bin/text2html/library/.data/NW_325.711_D 897.txt?NW_325.711_D897 http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/cgi-bin/text2html/.visual/img_txt/dir_75/c_0 8783.txt?C-08783 Class Picture - wouldn't it be wonderful if you would recognize your mother here - no year listed: http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/cgi-bin/www2i/.visual/img_med/dir_75/c_08784 .gif http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/cgi-bin/www2i/.visual/img_med/dir_75/c_08785 .gif http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/cgi-bin/www2i/.visual/img_med/dir_75/c_08786 .gif http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/cgi-bin/www2i/.visual/img_med/dir_83/g_08500 .gif http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/cgi-bin/www2i/.visual/img_med/dir_84/h_02742 .gif http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/cgi-bin/text2html/finding/government/.ms_fin ding/MS-2045.txt?MS-2045 Although I doubt that you will be given any information - you could contact the B.C. Govt Vital Stats http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual/governmt/vstats/v_events.htm - and ask about a birth registration for the child of Betty Doreen Palser ( was that her name at the time - or was Palser her married surname - I see that your surname is Palser ).Birth records are kept private till the 101st year after the event ( from my experience even to brothers and sisters. ( unless you can prove the death of the child). It is more than possible - that your Big brother - is not aware of his history. But - perhaps if you registered with some of the groups attempting to help reunite families - you may find some help. You could post a notice - in some newspapers - Looking for William - the child of -----------. Wishing you much luck with your research. 3. Hi all, I often find records for people which indicate that the person died at Essondale. I thought it would helpful to include some information about the Hospital when I send the record to them. I live just above the Riverview Hospital, which is the modern name of Essondale Hospital. It is still in use these days, but with many fewer patients than before. Because it's an arboretum, it's a beautiful setting with many unusual trees. The property overlooks the Coquitlam River and Colony Farm (which used to be farmed by some of the patients and is now a Regional Park and also the site of a Forensic Psychiatric Institution). There is a garden on the Riverview grounds which was originally tended by patients. It has recently been restored. There are many of the older buildings which are now used mainly by film companies. Here are a couple of links I've found, although nothing with a detailed history of the hospital. I highly recommend a visit to the Riverview grounds, especially if you have a relative who was a resident there. You will be comforted to see that , no matter how they may have been burdened with mental illness, they were able to live in an area where there was great beauty. Hopefully, that helped bring some peace to them. Riverview Hospital (Essondale) Links http://www.tricitiesonline.com/riverview/gallery.htm photos of Riverview grounds http://www.urban-forestry.com/citytrees/v37n4a23.html description of the Riverview Arboretum “The Riverview lands are on a slope overlooking the Coquitlam River in Coquitlam, BC. They have become, through the course of nearly a century, a microcosm of British Columbia's natural and cultural history. In 1904, they were purchased by the provincial government and cleared of their ancient forest to create a hospital and haven for the mentally ill. Provincial Secretary, Henry Esson Young, envisioned a hospital as well as a provincial botanical garden on the site. Mr. Young had traveled extensively in England and Europe and brought the concept of the botanical garden from there. There were no botanical gardens anywhere in Canada at that time so the one he developed in BC was the first in Canada. He also initiated work on the nearby Colony Farm, which was to be a provincial experimental farm. Both the farm and the botanical garden were created to be adjuncts of a new provincial university. “ -- Pam Thomson in BC, Canada Researching Fairweather & Todrick mailto:pamthom@intergate.ca

    1. [CAN-BC] TWO Family Pastimes To Share - and 2003 is An Important Year.

    3. To all:- I know all are busily gathering MANY signatures, whether these be English, French, Senate, House of Commons or Non-Resident -- with all the happenings of the past while, we must look ahead in order to do research further back. The above sounds like a mixed-up statement, but we must work now to regain what belongs to us -- OUR census records. The 1911 is supposed to be released in 2003 -- WE have to make certain all will listen to us. That is in the future, and the 1911 census is our past. If you have not done so, download Adobe Acrobat and petitions http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Petition.htm Just follow directions and get them to us ASAP. 2003 is also very important to many of us -- our ancestors arrived in Halifax from 1750 onwards, but founded Meriliguish (Lunenburg) in June, 1753. The 250th anniversary of the founding will be in 2003 -- again, we must look ahead to see a glimpse of our past. While everyone is busily signing petitions, the following site has beautiful photos of the South Shore of Nova Scotia (my home) and many of Lunenburg. When you see the pictorial shots of Lunenburg, you will realize when YOU attend the 250th reunion at Lunenburg, all shoes must be "UPHILL WALKERS". Enjoy the following -- but keep signing petitions:- Great photos of South Shore, Nova Scotia http://community.webshots.com/album/17534438CziTlZcTEv Happy Thanksgiving to all -- now I am off to Sunnybrook Veteran's Wing to visit my husband.
