    1. [CAN-BC] Post 1901 Census -- New totals posted
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. Since my return frrom Ottawa I have made more than 500 updates to files for MPs and Senators correspondence logs on the Post 1901 Census Project website at the URL following my signature. As of this morning all files sent have been loaded to the server and new totals are shown online. Senators show FOR -- 18 AGAINST -- 2 NON-COMMITTAL -- 12 NO RESPONSE -- 64 MPs show FOR -- 131 AGAINST -- 9 NON-COMMITTAL -- 67 NO RESPONSE -- 94 Ontario and Quebec are still showing a lot of blue question marks which indicate we have received no letters of response from those MPs and Senators. We would appreciate having any responses received from them so that we can add them to their correspondence logs and update the totals. Letters and email to our representatives in Ottawa, and signatures on petitions are still needed to show them that we have not forgotten our need to regain public access to Historic Census Records. We must keep the pressure on them until we have succeeded in our goal. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. [CAN-BC] Post-1901 Census :- Many Senators Need Letters -- Postage is FREE
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all who wish to support Senator Lorna Milne:- Support of Senator Lorna Milne and her Bill S-12 could lead to release of Post-1901 Canadian census records. The records are safe at National Archives -- but you and I are prevented from viewing OUR own history. The last Scoreboards posted by Gordon Watts are from October 1, 2001 -- to date no GOLD TICK AWARDS have been posted by Gordon, whether Senate or House of Commons. Check http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census Scoreboards for both Senate and House of Commons are there. Re the SENATE, the Oct. 1/01 numbers read:- FOR = 15/ AGAINST = 2/ NON-COMMITTAL = 10/ and NO RESPONSE = 69 as follows:- Quebec = 21/ Ontario = 15/ New Brunswick = 6/ Nova Scotia = 6/ Newfoundland = 4/ Alberta = 4/ Saskatchewan - 4/ Prince Edward Island = 2/ NWT, Yukon, Nunavut = 3 PLEASE -- Once the GOLD TICK AWARD list is published, do not write to ask these Senators for their support -- it could work against what Senator Milne is doing for us. Use your WORD or whatever program, type your letter, change the name(s) of each Senator as you finish printing each letter -- address will be the same except for the name(s) -- POSTAGE IS FREE. Cost:- A bit of time, about 100 sheets of paper and 100 envelopes. Hard-copy mail is answered more quickly than e-mail. Again, PLEASE check lists of all present supporters. Muriel M. Davidson <davidson3542@home.com> Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Senscore1.htm

    3. To all:- The often-mentioned Privacy Laws re the census records do not exist, except for those by the enumerators -- not one person has been able to find it. 3. Hi Pat, When you are researching recent records that usually means you must research in public records. Government records are governed by privacy laws that vary between governments and government levels. Canadian Federal records are protected for 92 years but provincial records are quite different, only 25 years in case of BC death records). Public records include newspapers, (especially look for obituaries), telephone books and directories (you can follow the addresses that people lived at, and even their occupations if you use the "snoop books"), land ownership (if you know the address you can get information like that available to real estate agents about who owns properties and who they sold to etc.), Cemetery and funeral home records are available, church records are available at the discretion of the ministers, school and transcript records are often available (check school year books). You just have to think differently. Everyday we fill out forms for various reasons, if it is not a government form then the privacy laws are different, check them out! 3. Will someone tell me what resources are available for searching families beyond the 1901 census? How does one come farther forward in time without later census records? I am assuming that church and death records are your only help. Something I may have missed? I know at the present time you are having a battle with your legislature there to get the later census records open but it really makes it hard to get beyond the 1901 time period. Pat in Oregon <Wahlhood@aol.com> =================================== Hello Pat:- This not a Dumb Question -- but a very good one! We do need the Post-1901 Canadian Census records opened -- for all of us to peruse. Not all church records are available for viewing -- e.g. Baptist ones are "sealed" with other denominations also making their records only available to their church members. There are search offices, even on census records, but all these cost about $45 for each individual search. I have given the address to many -- but it costs $$$, as do birth and death certificates. Rather than your question being DUMB, it SHOULD get genealogical societies all working together, as Alberta did. Senator Lorna Milne has Bill S-12 and Murray Calder has C-312, but WE have to PROVE to the ones we elected or who were appointed that WE honestly want to have the records released. Some have not answered since March 1999 -- but I presume he/she drew the increased pay since then -- some Senators do not seem to be able to afford e-mail. Check http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census There are Scoreboards for both Members of Parliament and Senate, Petition sites and much, much more. We need SIGNATURES!!! Gather SIGNATURES now!!! My dream is receiving petitions from each Ontario Genealogical Society, of which Lorna and Murray are members. [One so far direct -- several via Alberta] Thanks for the Not-So-Dumb Question, Muriel M. 2. I had an ancestor who was born in Scotland, got married and then moved to Canada so the story goes. Her surname was TRUELAND, not sure of her first name although it could have been Isabel. We know that she married someone with the surname TONGUE. In the little research I have done I think I may have found a link. I have found through the help of other people an Isabel Trueland marrying an Austin Joseph Tongue, not sure when but they had a son born in Ontario Canada in 1928. I think they then moved to British Columbia. I know that British Columbia is a large area but at the moment I'm grasping at straws. Does anyone have these people in there family tree? If you do I would really appreciate any help you could give me in my search for my relatives. thank you in advance, Julie, Scotland
