    3. Hi, I just happened about a page I hadn't seen before: http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/visual/geograph/geograp.htm There's a BC map there and you can click on a geographic area and then it will list the BC Visual Records from that area. As many people know, this is a great resource, as you can see and enlarge many photos of early BC. 1. [CAN-BC] Post 1901 Census -- Heritage Minister support access to Historic Census
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. I have sent the following News Release to most of the major daily newspapers and television stations across Canada. I have not sent it to any of the weekly or community papers. Feel free to forward it to your local papers and other media. Please remove this message before doing so. When forwarding please include the portion below the dotted line. Thank you for your interest and support. Gordon A. Watts gordon_watts@telus.net Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC http://globalgenealogy.com/Census en francais http://globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index_f.htm Permission to forward without notice is granted. ======================================== News Release of Canada Census Committee Contact: Gordon A. Watts 604-942-6889 Monday 29 October 2001 Heritage Minister supports access to Historic Census Vancouver - Sheila Copps, speaking Friday on Bill Good's TalkBack radio show (CKNW - Vancouver) stated that she was "very much in favour" of allowing public access to Historic Census Records. She was responding to a question by caller Gordon A. Watts, Co-Chair of the Canada Census Committee. In making this statement she joins National Archivist Ian Wilson, Information Commissioner John Reid, and 133 Members of Parliament that have to date expressed support for this access. Ms. Copps also stated she has requested to appear before the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology who are currently reviewing Private Member Bill S-12, submitted by Senator Lorna Milne. Bill S-12 would permit the public access to Historic Census Records, 92 years following collection, sought by genealogists and historians. It includes a provision for individuals, in the year before the scheduled release, to object to the inclusion of their information in the records made available to researchers. Currently, 235 years of Census records -- all that survive -- from the first Census of New France conducted by Intendent Jean Talon in 1666 up to and including the National Census of Canada for 1901, are held in the National Archives. These records are available to any body or person for purposes of research. Census records are considered to be the single most important source of information for those seeking information regarding their ancestry. They are the only source that provides information regarding families, rather than individuals. In excess of 40,000 signatures have been sent on petitions, emails and letters to MPs, Senators, and other government officials, seeking to regain access to Post 1901 records. This access is currently prevented by the refusal of Statistics Canada to turn control of those records over to the National Archivist. Without a change in the position of Statistics Canada there will never again be another Census of Canada made available to the public. -30- --------------------------------------- The Canada Census Committee is an adhoc committee made up of concerned genealogists and historians from across Canada. Co-Chair Gordon A. Watts retired from B C Telephone in 1996 and has been an amateur genealogist since 1990. He has spent the past four years extensively researching the issue of public access to Post 1901 Census records and is a leader of a campaign to regain that access. He participated in roundtable discussions relating to the Access to Information Act Review in Ottawa on 26 March 2001, and appeared before the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology in support of Bill S-12 on 19 September 2001. He can be reached by: e-mail gordon_watts@telus.net Tel. 604-942-6889 Fax. 604-942-6843 or by Canada Post at: 1455 Delia Drive, Port Coquitlam, BC, V3C 2V9 Further information can be seen at the Post 1901 Census Project Website at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census

    1. [CAN-BC] Post 1901 Census -- Press Release of Senator Lorna Milne
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All I copy below for your information a Press Release from Senator Lorna Milne regarding access to Post 1901 Census. The information contained therein, depending on the reaction of Statistics Canada, could forstall our preparations to proceed to the Federal Courts for a Writ of Mandamus for release of the records. Time will tell. Happy Haunting. <]:-) Gordon A. Watts gordon_watts@telus.net Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC http://globalgenealogy.com/Census en francais http://globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index_f.htm Permission to forward without notice is granted. ================================ Senator Lorna Milne demands that Statistics Canada stop breaking the law FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - OTTAWA - October 29, 2001 Today, the Hon. Lorna Milne demanded that Statistics Canada stop breaking the law and allow the release of post 1901 census records to the National Archives of Canada. "It is now clear that Statistics Canada has a legal duty to release post 1901 census records, and they have repeatedly refused to do so", Senator Milne asserted. "They can no longer claim any legitimate reason to avoid this duty. This vital record of Canada's history and people must be released into the keeping of the National Archivist of Canada immediately". Senator Milne was reacting to the release of 10 legal opinions that Statistics Canada has received over the last 20 years on the issue of the release of post 1901 census information. The documents were obtained by the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology. The committee is currently studying Bill S-12, Senator Milne's Private Senator's Bill that would allow for the release of census information 92 years after the date of the census. "The latest legal opinion unequivocally states that the better legal view is that post 1901 census records should be released." she noted. "Furthermore, the current Chief Statistician, Dr. Ivan Fellegi, was told as long ago as 1981 that, in order to comply with both the spirit and the letter of privacy and access to information legislation, Statistics Canada would have to release post 1901 census information". Senator Milne has received petitions from nearly 20,000 Canadians calling for the release of post 1901 census information. The 1906 Western Census records were due to be released in 1998 in accordance with the National Archives of Canada Act and the Privacy Act, but Statistics Canada has refused to act on this obligation. - 30 - For more information, please call Jeff Paul at 613-947-9744

    1. [CAN-BC] GRAY family
    2. Greetings fellow listers, I am researching GRAY families of Ontario and British Columbia. My 2nd great grandfather was: Matthew GRAY, born about 1820, in Ireland. His family left Ireland when Matthew was a boy. Matthew Gray married Elizabeth Eliza CONNELLY (not sure of the spelling) probably about 1848 in Ontario. About 1875 they went by ship around the horn with their family to New Westminster. While in Houstonville, Wellington, Ont., Matthew and his son Thomas ran a mill. Thomas's son, ARTHUR WELLESLEY (A. WELLS) GRAY served as mayor of New Westminster for many years, in early 1900's. His brother was SANDY (ALEXANDER BAIRD) GRAY. The father, Matthew GRAY, died 14 March 1895 in New Westminster. Family says he helped build the Baptist Church in New Westminster, after the original one burned down. In his later years he was "Hotel Keeper" at H 505 Carnarvon, and this is where he died. I understand that many of the GRAYs of New Westminster are related to this Matthew Gray. A cousin who lived there, Elsie Gray, was told by her mother not to date any Gray's, as they were probably related. I have a great deal of information to share on the Gray Family, and would like to find others working on this line. If you have gotten to the end of message, THANK YOU for reading this. Any suggestions will be welcomed. Suzie Sabin of Shelton, Washington

    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- Many residents of British Columbia have contacted me this morning, asking "How do I sign a petition?" Prior to this, ALBERTA had the lead in total number of signatures to be tabulated and given either to Senator Lorna Milne for the Senate or Murray Calder, MP for House of Commons. Last evening I tabulated a total of 585 signatures to be added to their second-place total, as of October 15, of 1394. I did an "actual provincial total" and Alberta had 4898 (other provinces had been included in their previous total) Adding 1394 and 585 together = 1,979!!! Download both House of Commons and Senate -- you can do it! http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Petition.htm [Download Adobe Acrobat first] You may send petitions, when completed, to either Gordon Watts or myself -- we exchange these monthly! 1. Re: [CAN-BC] Do Any Of You Live In WA. Or OR.?
    2. Viola, The Lewis & Clark expedition reached the mouth of the Columbia River in the fall of 1806. The major wagon train movements across to plains to Oregon began in the 1840's. See for a history of Vancouver (WA), where the Hudson's Bay trading post was established in 1825. http://www.ci.vancouver.wa.us/history.shtm Here's the url for the Clark County Gen. Society (Vancouver) http://www.ccgs-wa.org/ Clark county births from 1890-1907 Washington state birth records are from 1907. I assume if you knew where the ladies were born, you would have said so...there were people who did arrive during the early 1800's by ship to various, though limited, northwest coastal ports. > If any one on this list is from WA. or OR. could you tell me how far > back births go?
