Greetings All. Subsequent to my previous message, I copy here FYI my message to MP Peter Adams, Chair of the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs. Similar messages, with appropriate wording changes to reflect their position on this Committee, and their position recorded on the MP Scoreboard of the Post 1901 Census Project website, have been sent to all other members of the Committee. All are encouraged to write their own letter to members of this Committee to seek their support in making Bill C-312 votable. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Watts To: Peter Adams - MP Sent: Thursday, November 15, 2001 9:54 PM Subject: Please make Bill C-312 votable. Mr. Peter Adams - Chairman Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs Dear Sir: I write to you at this time in your capacity as Chair of the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs to request that you lend your support in making Murray Calder's Bill C-312 votable in the House of Commons. Regaining public access to Historical Census Records, following a reasonable period of closure, is very important to a great many Canadians. Without access to these records many may never know the origin of their ancestors. Many others, British Home Children and their descendents for example, seek to be reunited with the families from which they have been isolated by past government policies. To date, in excess of 40,000 signatures supporting access have been received on submissions to the Expert Panel on Access to Historical Census Records, email and letters to MPs, Ministers and Senators, and petitions to the House of Commons and the Senate. For whatever their reasons, it seems obvious that the current government has no intention of bringing down their own Bill to permit the access so vital to genealogical and historical research. Permitting Bill C-312 to be votable would allow a full and free discussion of this issue in the House of Commons. The MP's Scoreboard on the Post 1901 Census Project website (at the URL following my signature) shows you as being supportive of a Bill to regain public access to Historical Census records. We ask again for your support in making Bill S-12 votable. Do not allow this important Bill to be defeated without at least a chance of success. Thank you. Gordon A. Greetings All. MP Murray Calder, our champion in the House of Commons, recently had his name drawn in the Private Members Bill Lottery. While he has more than one Private Member Bill in the works he has chosen Bill C-312 as the one to put forth. C-312 is identical to Senator Milne's Bill S-12 currently under review by the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology. If passed into law these Bills would give us the access to Historical Census Records that we seek. It is expected that the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs will likely meet on 21 November 2001. It is this Committee that will determine whether or not Bill C-312 will be deemed votable. Murray will make a presentation to argue that it should be votable. In it he will no doubt point to the enormous interest in this issue as expressed in the tens of thousands who have signed petitions. It is important to understand that the committee doesn't necessarily look at the merits of the bill -- only whether it should be votable. In other words, a committee member may be opposed to it, but still feel it should come to a vote. They will choose 5 bills from the 15 selected in the recent draw to become votable. The process is explained at this site: (be sure to include the full URL) www.parl.gc.ca/information/about/process/house/precis/chap15-e.htm If all goes well, the bill could come up in the House as early as December 11th. If deemed votable and passed at this stage, Bill C-312 would proceed to review by a Committee of the House. I copy below a list of the members of the committee and their email addresses. Perhaps they would appreciate some brief notes advising them of them of the importance of Census records to our research. Advise them that seek their positive vote in making Bill C-312 votable. Keep your messages polite and to the point. As a point of interest, checking the MP's Scoreboard for the members of this committee there are 8 gold ticks of support, 4 non-committal fences, three question marks indicating no response, and 1 red X of opposition. A plea for help ! I would like to get further genealogical information about Nigel TOMLIN and his wife who was Phyllis Muriel DIXON. In 1947 they had 3 sons and were living at 1984 Waterloo Rd, Victoria B.C. Nigel was born in 1915 and might be still alive, if so I would like to get in contact with him. I have no details of the three sons and would like further information. Phyllis Muriel DIXON was the daughter of Arthur DIXON who was my fathers cousin. I think she died in 1999. Any help on this family most gratefully received by.......GRANT DIXON (Ross-on-Wye, England)
I would like to add my thanks and add Kudos for many very helpful answers and hints. Stella has a tendancy to go the extra mile, believe me, to help someone. Thanks Stella, so much for all you help and wise words. I am still working on my Swedes, but you got me started!!! I guess Ken pretty much spoke for me. Like I told you before Stella, you are a God Send. You are in the running also Ken, you both have been very helpful to me, as well as have many others on the other lists that I subscribe to. You are all very much appreciated. Pat Ontario
Hello Everyone, Thankyou for all offers of help. I really appreciate the information I get from other people (as do most people) especialy when it is from another country as you have to rely on their help. I don't mind doing lookups for people (only access to B.M.D. for England and census for north east Lincolnshire) as I hope I am repaying for the help I get in some way. I am thrilled to bits if I find something for someone else as I am if I find something for myself. Stella, I always see your name on the list to help others and you are very much appreciated. As with everyone else who offers help. I rang someone in B.C. from information that I received and they were quite rude. I have a victorian photo of their father with his uncles and grandparents. I would have loved that if it was any of mine. Obviously not interested in family history. My feelings were hurt. Still not everyone is the same. I have received B.C. registration of deaths of Elizabeth May THOMAS she died in Vancouver General Hospital on 6th September,1943. Her last address was Adanac Street, Vancouver, B.C. I have only been on this list for a very short while and already Stella has helped me out. She is our "Internet Angel" to those of us who need a little help. Grateful, Suzie
Hello Everyone, Would anyone look for obituaries for WALKLEY, THOMAS (ELIZABETH and SEYMOUR JOHN) and FIXTER (LOUISE). I would be very greatful. regards Linda. Offering to do lookups on B.M.D. in England.
Hi to all: Would just like to express my greatest admiration to Stella, although I have not had much contact with her, she seem to be there at all times to help fellow searchers with their problems. My hat goes off to her she must be a great lady, also when it comes to doing Family History and Genealogy work. She must be very knowledgeable in all of the aspects of this wonderful past time which we hope to pass on to our following generations. Also thanks to all that help her also. Take care Ken in Enderby
Stella has also helped me many, many times by getting copies of death regs. etc. Where would the lot of us be without her expert knowledge? Keep up the great work Stella, we'd be lost without you. Greetings All. The following message is, for the most part, self-explanatory. A brief cruise through the information it directs us to would make it appear that genealogy and family history has been overlooked as part of our 'heritage'. The electronic survey may give us the opportunity to make the bureaucrats aware that we feel genealogy and family history to be a very important part of our 'heritage'. I for one intend to study the information to which this posting refers and to complete the survey. I intend to make full use of the 'Comments' section to reiterate that Heritage Minister Sheila Copps has publicly voiced her support for public access to Historic Census records. I will also make the point that we feel that Ms. Copps and her Ministry should make every effort to further efforts to achieve that goal. I encourage all to take full advantage of this opportunity. Now this may not have happened but could have. Marie Landry's daughter Catherine McDougall born ca 1818 married Raphael Tremblay. Lived most all her married life in Lac la Biche <AB. Catherine lived to near 100 years old. Now do you think it could be heredity. Marie born ca 1800 maybe could have lived into 1880-1890?? Oh please let that be possible. But would not help us with no last name tho. But my Marie Landry was supposedly born in BC. But in 1800 they were no boundary lines were there? So maybe Marie Landry was born at or near Astoria. My Duncan McDougall ran Astoria and some Landry men worked there. Would any one have any Landry mens names there? About out of all possibilities. Thank you. Viola.
