Good morning, Stella http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/CAN-BRITISH-COLUMBIA/2001-12 - postings are down compared to the usual number for a month, but still researching via other methods or tidying up. I'm recuperating from major surgery so cannot spend as long at any one task as I was before. Eventually all will heal and although I tend to be a lurker rather than a poster. Most of the regulars will be back to it all after they're finished with the holiday chores, joys and headaches ;-) As for myself, I've got the perfect excuse for lack of trimmings *EG* Regards; Dennice researching: Brûlè, Poirier, McFadden, Stephens, Michelsen, French, Brooks, Brown, Goudie, Vautrin pioneer families of British Columbia and their 'country wives' http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~goudied/index.html > Good Morning - I haven't received any messages from the B.C. list - for a > while. > Also check re archived Browse archived messages - listed as not found . A visit to Rootsweb, Ancestry or the LDS site... or any similar site, will convince anyone that you can only use what you find as a guide. There are people that don't bother verifying what they find... and then others see what they have and take it as gospel... further confusing matters. I've found some of my family lines that were poorly recorded... and when I log onto Ancestry I find 15 to 20 people who have submitted the same mistakes. Newbies go there and see all these postings and think... "Well if all those people found the same thing then it must be right". They don't bother verifying it. I've had people ask my assistance and then chastize me for giving them misinformation because "I found on an FTM disk........ ". They don't believe that FTM is inaccurate... the Church registries are wrong. I'm not saying that all my database has been verified --- more than half has... what hasn't is not considered accurate by me... It is simply a guide... And will eventually be proven. Some people believe most of what they read... Which is REALLY dumb. A few years ago, a technical college in Massachewsetts had it's Information Technology students survey ONLY American schools and US Government sites to see how accurate was the information. The results... More than 60% of the data available at post-secondary institutions was inaccurate and filled with misinformation (more than 25% of this was outright lies). Government sites didn't fare much better... They were just under 55% inaccurate or outdated. Even this.... Don't believe EVERYTHING I say... <grin> Favourite French-Canadian Recipes: ======================== Crème brûlée québécoise 4 1/2 T. cornstarch 1/2 tsp. almond extract 3 cups milk 1/2 cup whipping cream, whipped 3/4 cup molasses Blend cornstarch and milk in top of double boiler. Many thanks to one and all for your kind replies to my request. I'd like to take a moment to thank, you know who you are, for his help which was generously given so quickly. Thank you, T-G who shall forever be known by one and all who worship at your feet as the goldmine of information of genealogy. Of the other GOUDIES or connections already known to myself (mentioned Surnames are mentioned somewhere in the file), please feel free to contact me directly for a rather large GEDCOM which was thoughtfully compressed for faster download. Forwarned it took over an hour to merge as there are 8,000 names in the database and I've no doubt that it will take a considerable time to sort out the rest. Again, thank you... T. G. Hello Dennice, What you need to do is go to http://loricase.com/CDs/cdlist.html and either on that page or http://loricase.com/CDs/cdwftlist.html you should be able to find someone to lookup the tree. This site has people with Family Tree Maker CD's who will do lookups. Greetings All. I have received a list of times and dates of most of the Town Hall Meetings for expressing opinions regarding public access to Post 1901 Census records. (Their ad mentions only the 1906 and 1911 Census') There appears to be fewer meetings than expected, and if I learn of others I will post that information as soon as I get it. I copy the list of meetings below. It appears that anyone wishing to speak on the subject will be given a 15 minute time slot in which to do so. As sessions are slated to last two hours, this means that a maximum of 8 speakers will have the opportunity to speak in each session -- 16 speakers maximum in each location. Practically speaking, with administration overhead time required for each session the numbers of speakers may be reduced if they stick strictly to the two hour time period for each session. Presenters, in either English or French, will be chosen on a first come, first serve basis. Regardless of what location you will attend, if you wish to speak to the issue, contact Environics NOW -- TODAY to inform them of your desire to speak. If you wait you will be unlikely to obtain a spot to speak. Contact them by telephone at 613-230-5089 or by email at censusconsultations@environics.ca I have already sent my request to be a speaker at the Vancouver meeting. I am advised that for those not wishing to speak, but who wish to attend the meetings, there will be room for spectators. We hope that there will be a good attendance at all of these meeting to show that we are interested in what happens at them. I would appreciate being informed by those who are accepted as speakers as to where and when they will be speaking. So that the greatest possible number of people can be made aware of these meetings, please circulate this message to others, and forward it to other mail lists. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Greetings All. I have today been advised that the Ottawa Citizen newspaper today (Thursday) had an ad on page A7 advertising the first of Statistics Canada's Town Hall meetings -- the first of Industry Minister Brian Tobin's announced "further broad based consultations with all Canadians" regarding public access to Historic Census Records. What is interesting about this ad is the heading of it, which was reported to me as "Express your views and opinions on releasing the individual 1906 and 1911 census questionairres." While only the 1906 and 1911 Census' are mentioned, it is expected that these hearings will have a bearing on access of later Census as well. Environics Research Group has been contracted to conduct Town Hall Meetings in 14 major centers in each of the Provinces and Territories, as well as two focus group surveys in each of these centers. This is the same company that conducted the focus groups and national surveys by Statistics Canada for the Expert Panel on Access to Historical Census Records. The first meetings are to be held in Ottawa. Date: Friday 14 December 2001 One from 2:00 - 4:00 PM and another from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Location: Sir Guy Carleton Room, Mariott Residence Inn 161 Laurier Ave. West, Ottawa Presentations are in English or French on a first come, first served basis. To confirm attendance, which they request, once can call (613) 230-5089 or email censusconsultations@environics.ca There is some concern, because attendence is requested to be confirmed in advance, that these meetings will not be as open as one might hope. We sincerely hope that no one who wishes to attend will be prevented from doing so. Information regarding these meetings is expected to be on websites for both Statistics Canada and Environics Research, however, at the time of this writing, the Environics sites are 'under construction' and there is nothing on the Statistics Canada website as yet. Perhaps there will be tomorrow. Environcs Research's home page is located at http://erg.environics.net/ On the upper left side, links for English and French are shown under a heading of "Census Consultations" The link given for Statistic Canada was http://www.statcan.ca/english/census96/histcrd.htm which is the same page on Statistics Canada's website on which the link to information on the Expert Panel is located. It is vitally important that those who wish to see public access to Historic Census Records make an effort to attend these meetings, and express their opinions regarding access. If we do not do so we stand a chance of losing these records forever. It is our feeling that the focus groups and surveys conducted for the Expert Panel were biased towards obtaining a negative response to access. We are concerned that information provided and questions asked during these town hall meetings and focus groups will be similarly biased. I have attempted to obtain information from Dr. Ivan Fellegi, Chief Statistician of Canada, regarding what information would be provided to participants, and what questions would be asked of them. So far he has declined to respond. I would appreciate it if some-one attending these meetings would let me know what transpired and how they felt the proceedings had gone. Let us know as accurately as possible what information was given and what questions asked. I am particularly interested in knowing if the unsubstantiated "promise" of Statistics Canada is introduced, and what degree of emphasis is placed on it. I would like to think that a transcript of the proceedings will be kept and made available to the public, but I think the odds are against this happening. Watch your local newspapers for notices of meetings and focus groups to be held in your area. Meetings in other areas are expected to be held in December and January. Final reports from Environics are to be given to Statistics Canada by 15 February 2002. I cannot stress enough the importance of attending these meetings to let those conducting them know that we need, and want access to the Post 1901 Census records on the same basis as those up to and including 1901 have been, and still are. Please forward this message to all Ontario mail lists. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. To all:- Many of us know of several events taking place in the year 2003:- "Gathering of the Descendants" from 1753 -- mine arrived on the Murdoch. Bryan Keddy has a special radio program, "Sail On Nova Scotia" with Down Home music and many favorites. 2003 is supposed to be the year our 1911 Canadian census records are released to the National Archives for us to peruse -- have you checked http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census We need Senate and also House of Commons Petitions NOW!!! 2003 will possibly be the year viewers will have a peek at Winston Churchill's famed wartime bunker -- closed since 1945. 2003 could see St. John's Anglican Church rebuilt again -- all records were saved and are safe. [The congregation gave its approval!] To help many become acquainted with the Down Home music -- Bryan Keddy now has added "Nova Scotia Kitchen Party" -- have you ever been to a Ceilidh???? Basically, it means good music and all homegrown! The Rankins were on Nov. 24th -- others will be announced. http://www.novascotiakitchenparty.com To add to this Down Home feeling, how about my homepage -- liked by many for census, references, links, etc. -- Enjoy it at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/ Do not forget to visit the lighthouses, Scotty, the Canada/United States tribute and :Genetically Inherited Diseases -- prepared for Expert Panel. Do not forget to click on the Canadian flag logo -- things happen! Nova Scotia Census Online are also there!!! More are needed! Muriel M. Greetings, I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me with information on the following individual: Glen SMITH Born about 1915 - 1930 (unknown location) Died June 2000 in Spence's Bridge, BC Married Lorraine (surname unknown) Glen and Lorraine had one boy and one girl. Glen ran a hotel in Spence's Bridge. (Don't know the name of the hotel) All of this info is from my family members and I would love to confirm it. Does anyone know if is it possible to obtain a copy of Glen's obituary? Thank you in advance for any suggestions! Regards, Jennifer Lewis
Quite some time ago - someone on the list was searching the SWANNELL surname. While searching for another item - in the Langley Times - I came across the following obituary. Perhaps connected to the Swannell family being searched ? Hope this will be of some help. Cheers, Stella SWANNELL, Philip Wm. (Bill) SWANNELL: Philip Wm. (Bill). Born June 9, 1919 passed away on Sunday, November 18 in Langley, B.C. Bill was predeceased by his parents, brother, and his loving wife Ena. He is survived by family and friends. A memorial service will be held at Newlands Golf and Country Club at 21025-48th Ave in Langley on Friday, November 30 @ 1:00 p.m.
To all:- The following figures might not agree with ones as kept by the various provinces -- but are ACTUAL TOTALS -- BY PROVINCES. Also, as some petitions go to Senator Lorna Milne's or to Murray Calder's office (FREE postage in Canada) their totals are different. We would like a list of petitions mailed directly, with province and number of signatures, please!!! These include the period from Oct. 13 to Nov. 30, 2001:- British Columbia = 1394 + 617 = 2011 Alberta>>>>>>>= 4898 + 36 = 4934 Saskatchewan>= 766 + 00 = 766 Manitoba>>>>>= 177 + 00 = 177 Ontario>>>>>>= 1544 + 333 = 1877 Quebec>>>>>>= 507 + 39 = 546 New Brunswick>= 552 + 29 = 581 Nova Scotia>>>= 341 + 41 = 382 Prince Edward Island = 64 +00 = 64 Newfoundland>>>= 171 + 00 = 171 Nunavut, Yukon & N.W. Territories = ZERO IF ONTARIO and QUEBEC became very busy, we would have the totals necessary to PROVE to the Senate and House of Commons that we desire release of our Post-1901 census records. Earl Devlin lived in Campbell River & was married & there were children. One of the children died of a heart attack a few years ago. There may be more siblings. This info is what I obtained by asking family - not much is known about Helen's siblings. Nellie's parents were: Father, James Devlin ( was in the Queen's Army & went to India), profession of father - miner, religion - catholic. Mother, Sarah Boyle. I do have census listings that may be Sarah's parents and also info that may be James Devlin's parents. Helen(Nellie)Devlin married my grandfather,Eddie Hughes. Oh, bother! My first thought is that this isn't my Walter SCOTT -because he had a son-in-law who registered his death. But looking at the details again, he could just have had a son-in-law! If Walter's comapnion had been pregnant when they disappeared in about 1905, they could've had a child of 17-18 years of age in 1923. So, yes, please Stella, will you check the Obits for me to see if this is my Walter SCOTT.
