Can anyone tell when and how Dawson Creek BC. got its name? Its just that I am looking for lost cousins with the name Dawson. regards Ralph
Hi Fellow Listers ! First, I'd like to give a huge Thank You to Pam Thomson for getting copies of marriage and death certificates of Edwin Harris and birth certificate of Edwin's son Edgar Harris for me ! Since then, I have received information from the orphanage which placed my grandfather, James William Blance, with the Harris Family in 1884. Our family has lost all contact with the Harris Family and I'm anxious to learn anything I can about them in hopes of one day reuniting the descendants of the two families. My latest information from the orphanage told me that Edwin and wife, Harriet Harris, along with my grandfather, James, and his older adopted sister, Ethel moved from St. Thomas, Ontario to Vancouver, BC in early 1889. Mrs. Harris died in May or June of 1889 and Mr. Harris re-married ( I believe he married Elizabeth Doe in Vancouver in 1892 ). I don't know when the family moved from Vancouver to Vernon, but by 1894 they were living there and Ethel had married and become Mrs. John MacIntosh. Ethel and John and their son ( born in late 1893 ) lived on Edward St in Halifax, Nova Scotia at one point and by 1900 were living at 643 Harrison Ave, Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA. Meanwhile, Edwin and the second Mrs Harris and James were living on Vance St., Vernon, BC. A son, Edgar Harris, was born to Edwin and Elizabeth Harris in 1898. Edwin was described as a builder/contractor. Ethel wrote to the orphanage often and it was clear she cared a great deal for her adopted brother! , James. By 1898 she writes that James is no longer attending school, but is working in a store. She comments that he appears troubled and that he knows nothing about the fact that he was adopted. By 1900, she writes that Mr. Harris told James his true name and that it nearly broke his heart. He had left home, gone to the state of Washington and was nearly destitute. Ethel asked for addresses of James' true brothers and sisters who were living in Ontario. James did travel to Ontario and re-united with his Blance brothers and sisters, but after he married, he returned to British Columbia and worked in the General Store in Peachland, British Columbia approx. 1905-1910. He and his wife, Scillennia, son William James Harris Blance, daughter, Ruth Evalena Blance, and son ( my father ) Harold Edwin Blance lived nearby. Given the names of the children, I always assumed that he re-united with his adopted father, Edwin. My father was born in Penticton ( I think ) July 21, 1908. James developed a progressive paralysis and the family moved back to Ontario to get medical care in Montreal. However, there was no help for him and James died in 1913 at 33 years of age. This is when all contact with the Harris family ended and they may never have known why he never contacted them after this. Any help to re-connect with the descendants of this family or just to learn about their life in BC would be wonderful ! Hoping to learn something new and thanks in advance for any help possible ! Karen Blance Thomas

Happy holidays all, and a brief question! A lady in Alberta has asked me for some assistance in finding her ggg-gramp, John Pethers, who was killed May 16, 1916 in Steelhead (an area of Mission). She has obtained his death particulars that state the undertaker and that he was buried in the Hatzic Cemetary. I was at the Hatzic Cemetary yesterday-and wouldn't you know-he isn't there! The caretaker stated there weren't any other cemetaries in use in Mission at that time other than the one at the abbey. He isn't there either. After talking to this lady again, she said she had a memorial card for him. On this card it has the undertakers name as different from the one on the death registration. This one was an H. A. Kellaway and a very british sounding address. There was a H. A. Kellaway undertaker in London at the time-I assume that his family also held a memorial in England for him. Now, on this memorial card it says he was buried at the Mission City Cemetary. I have been unable to find anythig about this other cemetary. And our archives and museum are closed til the New Year. Hoping someone might have run across this cemetary in their search? My hubby (bless his heart-dragged him to several cemetaries yesterday!) reminded me that there is a small cemetary between Maple Ridge and Mission. I have always assumed that it was a private cemetary, but I have been wrong in the past. I doubt that that one would be Mission City Cemetary-its quite far from downtown Mission-or rather, the "city" of Mission. ANy ideas? Are Mission City and Hatzic the same cemetary? If they are-where is John Pethers? *g* Thanks all, Erin _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com
Good Morning Hilary Just a question: Are you searching for information - to ease questions that Lois May (Hobson) Martin may be having about her life and family? or for medical reasons. Please be careful about how information is presented to Lois - If she has Alzheimers or other problems - sometimes information given can also be fairly traumatic. My aunt - although usually very clear minded almost to the day of her death - had a problem with some over medication - as well as a problem between two medications administrated together - when they should not have been - made her a little confused. When she asked about her parents - and brothers - all deceased ( 3 prior to her own birth) - and was told that they were no longer living - she became very distressed to learn that they were no longer with us - and was determined that this was not true - that she had done something ( getting old) which made them mad at her - she went into a depression for over 3 months.(until meds were removed). Has their been a search for family papers.? A legal representative - for Lois May HOBSON - can have a search made for the birth registration at the B.C. Vital Stats. If the daughter is the legal representative for her mother - she may be able to make this application - otherwise - a lawyer - or perhaps the family doctor - can make this request. The cost will be $50.00 I believe - unless the circumstances make a difference. Has a search been made - through Newspapers for the time frame of March 12 1937 or 1940. Some families in those days did publish the births in the local newspapers. Marriages were also sometimes more frequently published than they are today. Perhaps contacting a Volunteer in Kamloops or Kelowna - or Contact the Public Libraries for those areas - they may have copies of newspapers for those times, archived on microfilm - and may offer a search. Did Lois May Hobson - live her young life in Kamloops /Kelowna - or did she live in the Lower Mainland. There is a street - named Lanark Street in Vancouver - perhaps that is the Lanark that she is referring to ? In your message - you mention Traumatized dreadfully as a child ! - In what way - perhaps knowing this would help to find more information about Lois. Has a Marriage Certificate for Lois May MARTIN ( nee Hobson) been searched for? The certificate will not hold much useful information for research - but may be helpful in possibly determining the birth year of Lois - if she was a first born. The Marriage Registration will hold more information - name and place of birth of both parties - names of parents - address at time of marriage etc - the Marriage Registration will cost $50.00 unless the marriage occurred to 1925 - when it would now be considered Public Record - free to search. Is the husband of Lois May MARTIN (nee Hobson) Still living ? If Not - perhaps a search for his death registration - and obituary - may lead to some information that you are searching for. Were there any other siblings of Lois May Hobson - perhaps they can help if you can find them. If they are deceased - their death registrations (may now be Public Record) or obituaries may be of some help. 1940" REGISTRATION of ALL CANADIANS over the age of 16 years: In the early 1940's we had the National Registration of All Canadians over the age of 16 years. This information can be obtained at the following: The fee is $48.15 - returned if no information is found. http://www.tbaytel.net/bmartin/natreg.htm http://www.statcan.ca/english/IPS/Data/93C0006.htm There is a death Registration for:the following - perhaps the mother of Lois? A search of this registration and the obituary may help. determine whether this person is related - 1 Name: LUCY AMY HOBSON Event Date: 1971 1 7 (Yr/Mo/Day) Age: 62 Gender: Female Event Place: VANCOUVER Reg. Number: 1971-09-001138 B.C. Archives Microfilm Number: B13308 GSU Microfilm Number: 2034216 Has the daughter obtained her own Birth Registration ( not certificate which only contains the very basic information needed for proof of I.D. etc). The death registration of the daughter will have her won date and place of birth - but should have the full names of both parents - the birth places of both parents - may include whether there were other siblings already born to the couple. The occupation - of the father - religion etc. The Cost of the Birth Registration will cost $50.00 I will be doing some lookups at the Library - not until next week - Holiday obligations. and can search the above registration and let you know if this person is related to your Lois. Please let me know if others have already made this offer. Wishing you a Very Happy New Year 2002. Now that the season is coming to an end, I decided to post this request, in the hope that some kind soul can help me out. I am requesting an obit for the following: Thomas Robert Quaife died November 30, 1933, in Nanaimo BC, and is buried in the Nanaimo Cemetery. Minnie Isabella Quaife died September 9, 1948, in Nanaimo BC, and is buried in the Nanaimo Cemetery. An obit for one or both of these people would be very much appreciated. Thank you Pat Ontario
Hi Alan My mother died of Alzheimers last year. It is a terrible thing for a family to go through. Thank God for caregivers. After reading your message for the second time, I question the caregiver's inquiry...she should be able to get whatever necessary information she needs for her caregiving from the daughter. Family documentation on a living family member is family business and is not necessary for the care of her patient. If the daughter wants to know more about her mother, or requires documentation for legal reasons, all she has to do is order her own long form Birth Cert. and that would give her mother's maiden name and her father's name, then... SHE can get her mother's birth certificate from Vital Statistics.
