    1. [CAN-BC] Genealogical Trip to BC
    2. Hi: We are planning a trip to British Columbia in April. We are going to the Vancouver, Victoria and Whistler areas. This will be our frist trip, so any help would be appreciated. I have looked on Cyndi's site for the different Archives, libraries, etc...So my question would be which ones are a must see? I don' t want to miss this opportunity, Also, what kind of weather will it be in April and how hard is it to get from one place to another? Thank you so much for any help.

    3. Enjoy your trip to B.C.! You don't say where you are traveling from and how much time you have. Vancouver is a large city on the mainland of B.C. It will take time to visit Whistler as well. It is a skiing area about 2 hours drive from Vancouver. Whistler/Blackcomb will have snow in the higher elevations, but Whistler Village should be clear. Vancouver in April will be like Victoria (both could be rainy) I concur with Dennice Goudie. Victoria is easy to get around in and the weather will be great. If you are traveling from the mainland, the ferry trip through the islands is worth it. Victoria is the capitol of B.C. It is on Vancouver Island reached by a 1 1/2 hr.ferry ride or by airplane. When you arrive at either the Vancouver Island Int'l Airport or the Schwartz Bay ferry terminal it is about a 25 min+ drive to Victoria. The Provincial Archives are right near the inner harbour.(part of the Provincial Museum building complex) www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca. Victoria also has an excellent City of Victoria Archives helpful if your heritage is Victorian. www.city.victoria.bc.ca There are many helpful sites online: B.C. Ferries,Vancouver Island,Whistler, Victoria-all have their urls. Let me know and I will pass them along to you off-list.

    3. Hi As a lifetime (other than a few years in my teens) resident of Vancouver Island (on which you will find the city of Victoria - City of Gardens) April is a wonderful time to visit British Columbia. We will have done the flower count (already have flowers outside in bloom - many survived what has been an unusually mild winter on the Island) If you are planning anything touristy - Victoria would be a very good bet for a genealogy vist as B.C. 3. There are no Tina KLASSEN - listed - There are no Tina Bargen listed in the Govt Vital Index. Deaths. A thought: The Funeral Director/Funeral Home - that handled the arrangements - may still have copies of all information taken - including information taken for the obituary. Contacting them may be helpful to you. There may be a Coronors report to determine cause of death. 4 Name: JACOB KLASSEN Event Date: 1958 8 7 (Yr/Mo/Day) Age: 55 Gender: Male Event Place: SURREY Reg. 3. At least two of my GGGrandUncles emigrated to Western Canada. Alexander Bain joined the 46th South Saskatchewan Regiment and died in France in 1918. There is some confusion over Alex as he appears to have enlisted under his mother's maiden name, McKay, but his gravestone is marked Bain. He appears in Canadian Military Archives and the WW1 Roll of Honour as McKay. Kenneth Bain died in Kamloops in 1896, apparently unmarried and without issue. I have his Death Certificate and his obituary from the local newspaper. I have also found a Donald Bain that may be my GGGrandUncle. I have obtained his Death Certificate and it shows him dying at age 43 on 9 April 1906 in South Vancouver, Canada and born Scotland. This fits with my ancestor b.11 May 1862, Latheronwheel, Caithness, Scotland. I would like to be able to either prove or disprove this link, as there were one or two other Donald Bains born in Scotland around this time. There also appears to be a record of Probate lodged with the British Columbia Supreme Court. If anyone can help me obtain information on the record of Probate or has other information on any of these individual I would be grateful. Regards Chris Macneill

    1. RE: [CAN-BC] BAIN - Seaching for Canadian connections -- probate at BC Archives
    2. Claudia Cole
    3. Chris: To see probate files from that era, ask the staff at BC Archives to look them up and copy them for you. Go to the BC Archives INQUIRIES page at http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/services/inquiry/accescom.htm and scroll down to the electronic form at the bottom of the page. You can leave your requests in that form. If you already have the reference numbers from searching at the website, that's even better. The staff will do the research without charge, if they can do it within about one half hour, which is their time limit for research for the public. So you have to be VERY specific in wording your request. If they take on the research, they will contact you and tell you what the photocopying charges would be. When they receive your payment, they mail the copies. The most difficult thing about this simple request is deciding how many pages you want. The charge is 40 cents Canadian per page, (letter size sheets) plus 14% taxes. If there are a great many pages, it makes sense to ask the staff person to include just those pages that have information of genealogical interest, or, in your case, any pages that show things like birth date, heirs, addresses, or anything that would prove or disprove relationship to you. In those earlier years, I usually find there are not too many pages in a file. The will, and statements about disbursements -- "who got what" -- and the name of the executor, who might be a relation, are the most useful parts. The Archives people are usually able to respond quite quickly, though the photocopying might be delayed a while if there are a lot of pages. 3. Hi. The Instructions to Enumerators are quite lengthy in several cases. I have transcribed several of those instructions into Acrobat PDF files in preparation for my submission to the Expert Panel on Access to Historic Census (The Myths of Census). I have transcribed them for 1871, 1891, 1901, 1906, 1911, 1916, 1921, 1926, 1931, 1936, and 1941. I will work today at putting together a page for the Post 1901 Census Project website (at the URL following my signature) on which links to the Adobe files will be available. Until that page is loaded, I will be willing, for speakers at the Town Hall meetings ONLY, on request to send these files attached to an email. I repeat -- speakers only. If I am inundated with requests from non-speakers I will not be able to get the web page done. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 3. Greetings All. FYI Gordon ----- Original Message ----- From: Gordon A. Watts To: letters@thegazette.southam.ca Sent: Wednesday, January 09, 2002 9:28 PM Subject: Re: Old census data may soon go public Editor: Montreal Gazette Sir: Re: Ann Carroll's article (Montreal Gazette 9 January 2002) regarding Town Hall Meetings on public access to Historic Census records. I am infuriated every time I hear representatives of Statistics Canada making reference to a "PROMISE" of confidentiality of Census that lasts "FOREVER". I am further infuriated by media reports that promote this "promise" without questioning it's existence. The fact is that NO PROMISE WAS EVER MADE that confidentiality of Census would last FOREVER -- IT DOES NOT EXIST!! It does not appear in any legislation, either past or present. It does not appear in any issue of the Canada Gazette. It does not appear in any Proclamation of the Governor General in Council. It is not reported in Hansard for debates of the House of Commons or the Senate. It does not appear in any media accounts that have been found relating to the 1906 or 1911 Censuses. IT DOES NOT EXIST!! An Access to Information request was submitted to Statistics Canada for any and all documented evidence of such a "promise". Not one piece of such evidence was forthcoming. Surely, if a single piece of documented evidence existed that would substantiate this mythical "promise", Chief Statistician Ivan Fellegi would leap at the chance to produce it. Dr. Fellegi will have his chance to "put his money where his mouth is". Initial steps have been taken to bring a public interest action to Federal Court to force the transfer of the 1906 Census of the Western Provinces to the National Archives. Once under the control of the National Archives it will be subject to the Privacy Act and Regulations attached thereto, and will subsequently be accessible by the public, 92 years after collection. 3. To Joe Peschisolido, MP:- I would really like to see all BLUE ????? dumped in the recycle bin -- we need your support IF we ever want to see the 1906 and 1911 and later census records. Murray Calder's C-312 was declared Non-Votable by a committee, the chairlady has since resigned -- 14 bills dumped in 15 minutes. However, Murray Calder is still working and will have one hour of debate about end of February. Senator Lorna Milne's S-12 Bill is in Third Reading, more debate, vote and we hope it comes to the House of Commons. QUESTION:- Will YOU be supportive of census release, with records automatically transferred to National Archives of Canada. Please let us know -- this memo will be posted on your memo board. 3. Good Morning Ruth, It is quite possible that Thomas Crawley - may have gone over to Comox - to be with family members - or a nice place to retire. You know that Ethel (married name?) was the informant on the Death Registration for Thomas. Do you have a copy of the registration? Does it give Ethel's address. If you don't have the regl. I can take a look at the death registration for information. and check the Vancouver Papers for possible obituary. I am going to the Library today - to clear up some lookups - and do some research into an old murder case which should take a good part of the afternoon. You Mention That Thomas Crawley - married Ann McDonald - Had she remarried after being married to Thomas Smith Cassidy? or was McDonald her maiden name. 3. Good morning, Ruth, have you tried to look for an obit at whatever newspaper Comox had at the time? That might give you a clue as to what he did there. 1. [CAN-BC] Post 1901 Census - Halifax Town Hall meetings
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings all. I have had some reports from those who attended the Town Hall Meetings on Monday, with some more to come. A number of those writing me have expressed the opinion that the first two speakers of the afternoon session, who spoke against access, were government 'plants'. I do not yet know their names or positions but at this time I am led to believe that they were employees of a statistical agency of the Nova Scotia Government. I know for a fact that for the Ottawa meetings, a Privacy researcher and consultant was 'invited' to appear and speak. He contacted me before the meeting to advise me of his 'invitation'. It must have been a shock to StatCan to find that this individual did not come out in opposition to access of the 1906 and 1911 Censuses. We will be watching with interest to see how many other meetings have 'invited' participants, particularly those who who work for the various statistical agencies of the governments, either federally or provincially. So much for the stated desire to hear the opinions of 'ordinary' Canadians. Some writers have expressed the opinion that they might like to speak at these meetings but feel others from various academic or historical/genealogical societies can do a better job. To those who might feel this way, my response is to say 'go for it!' Your opinion is just as valid as anyone else's, and as 'ordinary' Canadians, it is your opinion that is sought by the bureaucrats of StatCan. Don't let any of these meetings proceed without sufficient speakers to fill the alloted time slots. Please keep us informed regarding your participation, and what happens at the meetings.
