    1. [CAN-BC] Vital Events Registration lookups offered
    2. Pam Fairweather Thomson
    3. Hi listers, Depending on the weather, I may be doing some lookups of registrations this weekend. I know Stella has done a lot of the recently requested ones (thanks, Stella!) but if there's anyone who has some that still need to be copied, please contact me with the details. I have quite a few to get and if you and I have exchanged emails about it, yours will be in the "bag" (my red bag where I keep all my requests for lookups) ready to go. Due to limited time, I can only offer to get a photocopy and mail it to you. If you need other methods of conveying the information or if you're looking for obits, I can't help you right now. I look forward to hearing from you if I can mail a photoocopy to you. Pam -- Pam Fairweather Thomson in BC, Canada *I collect Fairweathers!* mailto:pamthom@intergate.ca

The age isn't listed because it won't have been determined when the death certificate was filled out. That, in turn, is usually because the person supplying the information, who is usually a relative (but it depends on the situation) didn't know Mr. Hackett's birth date. Still, it's worthwhile checking the actual entry, just in case. You might also check the British Columbia Cemetery Finding Aid. It's "a pointer database consisting of the surnames, cemetery name and location of more than 344,000 entries collected from records and headstone inscriptions associated with 264 cemeteries situated in the province of British Columbia, Canada and two from the state of Washington, USA." It's at: <http://www.islandnet.com/bccfa/homepage.html> There are only two Hacketts, both named Alfred George, listed in that database but they were both buried in the same cemetery just outside of Victoria. That's not far from Powell River as the crow flies, but you have to take a couple of ferries and drive a fair while to get from one place to the other if you are packing a body about. There's information when you repeat my search about how to contact the cemetery to see if the tombstone has birth info on it. ***** Peter Morgan * Morgan:Newsletters * 604.683.3241 * pmorgan@morgan-news.com News that sells * #118, 970 Burrard St., Vancouver, B.C., V6Z 2R4, Canada Dogs have owners. 3. Interested in information of the Joseph Poirier whose spouse was Ellen Brûlé (Helen Brule) I have no verfied d.o.d. - however, if the first Joseph POIRIER that would explain why there were suddenly no children born after 13 with the longest stretch without a child being born was 2 years (minimum of 2 in one year *gringe*) all who reached maturity. Only one of the thirteen verified children did not marry or have any issue to the knowledge of extended family. Long story short, I would like the information contained on the death registration, if there is SVKS who will have access (I do not require a copy of such so just notations would be very much appreciated) ---------------------- Name: JOSEPH POIRIER Event Date: 1898 3 27 (Yr/Mo/Day) Age: 63 Gender: Male Event Place: SOOKE DISTRICT Reg. 1. [CAN-BC] Post 1901 Census -- Response from Environics
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. In previous posts I copied information regarding certain events that had taken place in regards to the ongoing Town Hall Meetings and Focus Groups relating to access of Historic Census records. I sent a complaint regarding those events to Statistics Canada who forwarded it to Environics for their response. Today I received a response from Environics. I am assured that references to the 'promise' and the presentation of the 'compromise solution' at these proceedings is not a matter of the belief of the moderator and his 'pushing' these items. Part of the mandate for these proceeding was to obtain opinions regarding the 'promise' and the 'compromise solution' or 'third option' and in so doing Environics is simply fulfilling their contract. They are most certainly obtaining opinions regarding them -- mostly negative. While there may still be some misunderstanding regarding what took place at a Focus Group where an individual was excluded from participation, presumably because of membership in a genealogy society, I am hopeful that this can be amicably resolved, and may be before you read this message. I am assured that there have indeed been "individuals who are, or have been, involved in genealogy in these sessions and that the discussion in these sessions have benefitted from their points of view." I am advised that while certain persons have been invited by Environics to participate in the meetings, they indicated that they are "interested in hearing from anyone, with any point of view, on this subject. We thought it would be beneficial to the process to hear from those involved in privacy issues and academic research, so we invited a number of people in these areas to attend these sessions to give us their point of view. We are interested in hearing the views of these people, but we are not asking them to take sides." They further indicated that they have not solicited participation from anyone as an 'opponent' of the release of the records in question. I am, for the most part, satisfied with their explanations. My apologies to the lists for the frequency of my posts lately, but there is a lot happening at the moment. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Watts gordon_watts@telus.net Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC http://globalgenealogy.com/Census en français http://globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index_f.htm Permission to forward without notice is granted.

    3. Hi Pat, Marriage Registrations are Public Record from 1872 - 1926 - free to search and copy. Anything later - would require - a request to Vital Stats. - the Cost $50.00 +. Be aware that not everyone is entitled to obtain the Birth or Marriage Registrations: Access is limited to: the persons on the registration. 1.When My brother was to Celebrate his 50th Birthday - I wanted to Order a Commemorative Certificate - to be sent directly to his home. This certificate does not hold all of the information found on the Birth Registration - just a nice memento. I was refused even though I would not have access to the information. Application was denied - I did not fall into the acceptable category. 2. When my cousins were to Celebrate their 50thWedding Anniversary - I wanted to Order a Commemorative Certificate as part of my Congratulatory Gift. The Certificate was to be sent to their home in Ontario - I would not have any access to this information. Application denied: I again did not fall into the correct category. Their children were not eager to pay the $50. for the certificate . My cousins could have applied for a certificate to Celebrate their Anniversary - I offered them the money to pay for it. They would not accept - The thrill was gone. This was $100.00 that would have gone into Govt coffers instantly. with many more to come. Denied. ELIGIBLE APPLICANT: <snip> · anyone, as long as the bride and groom have both been dead for 20 years · anyone, if the record has been in existence for 75 years · the closest living relative of the person named, on production of proof of death and relationship · an agent of the above, if they are the solicitor for the person, or they have written consent of the eligible person Note: Closest living relative is defined as: mother, father, son, daughter, spouse, sister, brother, grandparent, grandchild. http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/services/inquiry/faqs/vitalfaq.htm#copynotpu blic Fees: http://www.vs.gov.bc.ca/admin/fees.html http://www.vs.gov.bc.ca/admin/credit.html *******Sorry I can't help. The only other suggestion - is that there may have been information about the marriage published in a newspaper for the Enderby area. OR - there may be church records - that can be accessed. 1. [CAN-BC] Post 1901 Census -- 'Compromise solution' on line -- and more
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. As of this morning the so-called 'Compromise Solution' being pushed by Statistics Canada at the Town Hall meetings is now accessible on the Post 1901 Census Project website located at the URL following my signature. I would encourage all to have a look at it -- particularly those intending to attend one of the Town Hall meetings. The various sections of this document have links to my critiques of those sections. It includes a summary of my assessment of the 'compromise'. The terms of this 'compromise' are so restrictive as to be little better than no access at all. Reports and presentations from those attending the Town Hall meetings are being added as fast as I receive them and am able to prepare the webpages. Ottawa, Halifax and Toronto are up now but I have not received reports from all presenters. Although those attending meetings are advised that the Environics website will be updated within 24 hours of the meetings, that does not appear to be happening. No reports for Montreal or Fredericton have yet been posted. Charlottetown should be posted on their website (http://erg.environics.net/) tomorrow. We shall see. The meeting for St. John's is scheduled for tomorrow. Hopefully the snow storms will be over and done with by the time of the meetings. I look forward to receiving reports on those meetings. Meetings coming up next week are for Winnipeg, Regina, and Edmonton on the 23rd, 25th and 28th respectively. I still have a lot of blanks on my list of those making presentations. If you have not done so already, let me know if you are intending to attend or make a presentation. I look forward to receiving your reports and presentations following each meeting. The Vancouver meeting to be held on 30 January (rescheduled without known notice from 4 February). Along with some that are travelling some distance to attend, I will be making a presentation at the evening session. None of these, however, will have travelled as far as someone from Virginia who travelled 900 miles/km (?) to make a presentation at the meeting in Fredericton, NB. I will be attending both sessions of the Vancouver meeing and look forward to meeting many of those who I have had email correspondence with. For those unable to attend meetings, Statistics Canada has advised that written submissions will be accepted by Environics. Send them to censusconsultations@environics.ca . Any such submissions should be received by Environics no later than the end of January. Terms of their contract require their report to be submitted to Statistics Canada by 15 February 2002. With all that is happening at this time I am afraid that my updating of the MP and Senator Scoreboards is taking a back seat. I have a few changes to add at this time and will get at those as soon as I am able. In the meantime, letters to our government representative are still required, asking for their support. Keep your messages polite and respectful. Some may have responded with a positive response that does not yet show up on the Scoreboard. Senator Cools is one of those who have responded with an expression of support yet shown on the Scoreboard. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. I have gotten some information on Luigi Del Tedesco, who settled in Powell River, thanks guys for that, but thought I would post for the newer people. I think the Del Tedesco's, Luigi and Vincenzo/Vince moved into Washington and may have worked in the mines there, are there mines there? And I know some went to Marysville and worked in the mines there...they are all related, so any ideas or recollections would be helpful, thanks and if I can help anyone over here in Italy, just holler, ciao for now, Riccarda

    2. Ines, Thank you so much for your kind offer. I was at the Interpretive Center and the Crowsnest Museum in Summer 2000. I didn't have as much time there as I would have liked, so I'll look through my notes that I took and get back to you in late February. Will that be enough time to remind you prior to your visit? Apologies to the list for this off topic comment, but if your troop has a chance to see the Coal Mine tour, it is a wonderful experience. My kids, then 5 and 2 1/2 enjoyed it immensely. Thank you again. Shelly in California

    1. [CAN-BC] Re: BC Archives lookup please
    2. Taryn - First of all, I must congratulate you for working on your family history at such a young age. Had I done what you are doing, I'd know so much more now than I do. Kudos to you! Although I cannot help with the lookup that you request, I would like to recommend another mailing list that might help you further your research when you are ready to do so. The Lancashire list at rootsweb is terrific! Someone will certainly be able to check the 1881 census for your William and Catherine Jones, and perhaps other records that might be available as well. I'm going to include the sign up address for that list, but I would caution that with your busy schedule, you may want to sign up on the digest mode rather than the individual email mode. This is a very helpful and very busy list. For individual mails: LANCSGEN-L-request@rootsweb.com For digest mail: LANCSGEN-D-request@rootsweb.com There are also a couple of lists dedicated specifically to Liverpool that you can access at this site: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/ENG/ Happy Searching!
