    2. > Just curious - what is the St Albans List you refer to ? > Hello Frank, In short, St. Albans Lists are a collection of records of immigrants crossing the border from Canada into the USA between 1895 and 1954. Although St. Alban is technically in Vermont, the list covers all border crossings including crossings that took place between BC and Washington State which is the area that I am researching. The list is first indexed via surname (Soundexed) on one film. There is basic information transcribed on these cards, some more than others depending on what the transcriber wrote down. Included on this Soundexed card is the date of entry. Once you have that, you can then search the Manifests which may contain more information than what was on the Soundexed cards. These manifests are indexed by year, then month, then alphabetically by port of entry. There is one important thing about these records that I'm trying to search. Apparently, the records after 1917 west of the Montana/North Dakota State line are not included in these records. I'm in the process of trying to find out who holds these records and whether or not they are filmed. If anyone knows, I'd appreciate it if you would let me know. Shelly in California

    1. Re: [CAN-BC] 1916 Address, Vancouver, BC
    2. Thank you Stella for the information on the CATERs and offer to check out the city directories for that time period. It is quite possible that this was an apartment complex of some kind, but my curiosity has me wondering if there was some kind of a children's boarding home there at this facility. The child, Francis or Frank BURCHAT, that was left behind in Vancouver was only about 7 or 8 years old at the time so he would have had to have been left in the care of others. I look forward to any help you can provide. I will be happy to reimburse your photography expenses should you take a photo for me. Thank you. Shelly

    1. RE: [CAN-BC] Wills & Estate Records
    2. Claudia Cole
    3. Cindy: That all depends on WHEN and WHERE the estate was settled! If you are looking at fairly recent wills and estates, you would have to go to the actual court registry where the estate was handled. If you haven't a clue where that was done, you have to start with a search request to the Victoria registry of BC Supreme Court, which has the database covering the whole province from the early 1980's to the present. For older records, you must ask at BC Archives. A problem arises in researching these records because of the irregularity of transfering of court records from the originating court registries around the province, into the BC Archives. This is a complicated system to work with, because each court registry can do what they please! Best thing to do, is ask the staff at BC Archives about the cases that interest you. Give them the date, or rough date, and the place of residence, if you know it. You can end up very frustrated with this kind of search, if you go straight to the originating court registry, because of the problem of running into inexperienced front desk staff in some court registries. They may say they "don't have those records anymore" and therefore you'd think they are BC Archives. However, the files of that date may be warehoused somewhere outside the court registry, but legally still in the custody of the originating court registry. To the front desk staff, that means "they aren't here." They may not be aware that their own office is STILL the only place where that record can be called in, and viewed. So I recommend starting with BC Archives. There are some court registries still holding onto their 1950's probate files! But the one that wins the prize for confusing the public, is the court registry that holds onto the only index to their 1977 probate files, while they long ago turned the actual files over to the BC Archives! Research is fairly simple if you're looking for older probate files. In the bigger cities of BC, the indexes are mainly still on microfilm and the Index to the Central Wills Registry is also on microfilm at BC Archives. If you know roughly the date of death, the search doesn't take long, and you can go in and do it yourself, or request that staff do it - leave a message: http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/services/inquiry/accescom.htm For the smaller cities, you can do it right now, online with the search engine at BC Archives website. http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/cgi-bin/www2m The online finding aids list all the people with probate files for a great many of the smaller cities. You can also figure out which probate files ARE in the collection at BC Archives, if you are familiar with the names of the towns where the courts were located. Staff would give you some advice on this, if you are not familiar with British Columbia. The newly released search engine at BC Archives is a tremendous improvement. Up to last week, it was a tough job to search for common names, like Ernest Smith, and George Robertson. Just about impossible, because both first and last name would occur in nearly every group of probate files. But now, you can search on the exact name, so your search time is cut drastically. There are also online guides to searching for wills and probate files at BC Archives, but these are mostly for the use of people going to the Archives to do a search in person. http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/general/guides/ag_prob.htm http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/general/guides/ag_wills.htm Claudia ----Original Message----- From: Cindy Paradis [mailto:babyboo196@shaw.ca] Sent: January 20, 2002 9:51 AM To: can-british-columbia-l@rootsweb.com Subject: [CAN-BC] Wills & Estate Records Hi I was just wondering if someone would be able to tell me how I would access Wills & Estate Records for B.C. 1. RE: [CAN-BC] William CHASE
    2. Claudia Cole
    3. Victoria: While waiting for the death record to be released, you might also try the BC Archives for his probate file. BC Archives has the microfilmed index to Vancouver probate files which continues up to 1986. The staff at BC Archives can search the Index for you within their half hour time limit for doing research on behalf of anyone living at a distance, and if there is a file, they should be able to look it up for you, and get exact date of death, also the names and addresses of the heirs. This would allow you to go after a newspaper obituary, if you haven't got it yet. Go to http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/services/inquiry/accescom.htm and scroll down to the electronic form at the bottom of the page, where you can leave your request for assistance. Be very specific, as they will not undertake lengthier research, just respond to specific questions that take only up to one half hour to handle. If you want photocopies of the pages showing the genealogical information you want, they will tell you how much you must pay for the pages, (the only charge is photocopying) before they mail the pages to you. If they don't find anything in the Vancouver Probate Index, it means he did not have an estate settled, or it was done in some other area of the province. 3. Hi Shelly. I may be able to take a look through the City Directories for that time frame in the next couple of days, I need to go out to the Passport office in Surrey, hopefully will not spend another 3 1/2 hrs waiting again. As far as the 2250 Pine Street Address - I don't drive - but occasionally - my brother takes me to a movie in that area - across town from where I live. we could have a look at that time unless someone else offers. That whole area - had been undergoing great changes - with many new townhomes and condo's being built. There are still some of the older homes - and older apartment buildings standing. If I can borrow my son's camera - and the building is still standing - I could take a photo - no promises. A DEATH REGISTRATION - for 1982 will be available - FREE - to search and copy as Public Record in 2003. You can obtain a Death Registration - for the sum of $50.00 from the Govt of B.C. Vital Events. If you know when William (Bill) Joseph CHASE passed away - I can do a search for an obituary in the Vancouver newspapers - but at least a close aprox. date is needed as it means going through all daily newspapers. *PLEASE. 1. [CAN-BC] Tribute to Don Messer and the Islanders -- SONS Radio and Much More!!

    3. To all:- I am very happy to have this new website -- listed on my Down Home page http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/ This means a great deal to me as Marg Osbourne (Squarebriggs) was a special friend, one I have missed greatly. Check out the Sail On Nova Scotia -- an early celebration of the 250th anniversary of OUR ancestors arriving in Lunenburg. Also, when you hear "I'm My Own Grandpa" -- think of census! The 1911 is supposed to be released in 2003! A busy year!! In addition, think of St. John's Anglican Church whenever you hear one of the well-known hymns -- we look forward to 2003! While there check the Nova Scotia Links for LYNDEN COWAN - PRINTS (my daughter's new web page) Happy listening, Muriel M. Davidson & Bryan F. Keddy davidson3542@rogers.com Brampton, ON -- formerly Liverpool/Dartmouth, NS Attention all Don Messer fans.... I have just downloaded 3 pages of Don Messer info and pictures on a new website - as well as recorded and converted over 50 Messer tunes yesterday.... - and as this is the crunch week for SONS (in competition with 160 hrs of listening from the Christmas Show) - I hope that the Tribute to Don Messer along with the website may attract some new listeners - so if you know of any Don Messer or East Coast music fans please forward this message.... I've set the programming on SONS up for five 1/2 hour Messer shows with an hour or so of regular programming in between ..... and guess now all I can do is sit back and listen and enjoy !!!!..... A Tribute to Don Messer and his Islanders at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~downhome/donmesser.html Sail On Nova Scotia Internet Radio at http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/bryanfkeddy/SONS.html Cheers and happy toe-tappin', bfknova bryanfkeddy@ns.sympatico.ca --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    3. Hi Carol, In all the cases I've seen, the Unknown age is used for a child who died at less than one year old.
