That's an interesting bit of information! Very sad how some of these women are recorded! Unfortunately our Agnes never married. Hi! Was your Agnes, in fact, an aboriginal person? If so, I have some pointers that may help. If she was, was it from a Band in the Alert Bay area? I know there are several Cook families there, and know of one descendant who is doing genealogical research. I am trying to connect with any members of the JEFFERIES family in British Columbia, since two of my wife's grandfather's siblings are thought to have moved to bC in either very late 1800s or early 1900s. They were Jack [=?John] JEFFERIES and Jemima JEFFERIES, who is thought to have married either a WIN[D]SOR or a PARNELL. They were both born in Exploits in Newfoundland in the later 1800s, and their parents were Thomas JEFFERIES and Jane LANGDON. I have extensive information about two other brothers, George and Stewart JEFFERIES that I can share with anyone interested. I look forward to any help you can provide Chris Christopher G Amos, SOMAC Phone: 709 673 4782 12 Fosters Road Fax: 709 673 2792 Springdale NF A0J 1T0
Hi Another thing I noticed the other day is that there are a large number of deaths where the wife has only the first name Widow! I happened to be searching for a name and put in the partial name "wid". A rather sad way for these women to be listed. I have tried 'everything' including looking at every young female who died within about a 10-year age span thinking the name was simply mis-spelled, or something! But no luck! Her name was Agnes Bridget Cook, born July 9, 1897 and died in 1916 (May 30 or November 30?). She shows on one census record as Bridget Cook. Her bible shows her name as Agnes B. Cook. I understand that there were time frames in BC when various person s (such as Aboriginals or Indians) were excluded from registration. That may explain why I can't find our Agnes who died in November 1916. If they were not recorded with Vital Stats during that time frame, were they recorded elsewhere? Is there any way to look for those excluded time frames? Many thanks if anyone knows! Joanne

Hi Gail Take a look at the following site http://visit-vancouverisland.com/ It is a "Big Island" , 12,000 square miles, 62 mile wide, 282 miles long. Bus service outside of the major cities and towns varies greatly, if you plan to travel to many parts of the island you might want to consider renting a car part of the time See also http://victoriabc.com/ http://www.AccommodationsBC.com/vancouverisland/ http://www.tourismmall.victoria.bc.ca/ Many hotels/motels have rooms with Kitchenettes so you can make breakfast/cook simple meals.etc: Do some basic research on these sites and then come back with your questions, several members of this list live on the island. I am sure that they will be able to give you advice once you know the questions. Hi Shannah, Give the following URL a try and see if it's what you want. I think so: http://www.bcstats.gov.bc.ca/data/pop/maps/RDMap.htm It's titled Regional Districts of British Columbia - 1996 Boundaries They're all nicely numbered and named and can be downloaded for either Portrait or Landscape printing and in PDF format. Databases available to members of Vancouver Public Library <http://www.vpl.vancouver.bc.ca/extDB/dbListing> It's not particularly well publicized, but the Vancouver Public Library makes a number of searchable databases available to its members via the Internet. All you need to access the databases is your Vancouver Public Library card number and the last four digits of the phone number you gave when you signed up as a member (usually your home phone). The URL above gets you to the Library's sign-in page. There are quite a few databases, but some of the ones of interest to genealogy, along with their descriptions from the site's home page, include (my comments in square brackets): BIOGRAPHY AND GENEALOGY MASTER INDEX Indexes current, readily available reference sources, as well as the most important retrospective works that cover individuals, both living and deceased, from every field of activity and from all areas of the world. Hi Chris. Please excuse the delay in responding to your message. My initial thoughts regarding your query were to direct you to the National Archives and the website for obtaining Attestation Papers for those serving in the CEF of WW I. You have obviously already availed yourself of those sources. Unfortunately, at this time we have no access to Canadian Census records past 1901, and unless our campaign to have things changed is successful, we will never see another Census in Canada made available to the public. I have every hope that we will succeed. Until such time, however, those records are not available. Should we succeed, the 1911 Census of Canada should be available in 2003. Best thing that I can suggest is to join the British Columbia mail list and post your queries there. You might find someone to check his presence in Vancouver through some of the City directories of the time. To join this mail list send a message to CAN-BRITISH-COLUMBIA-L-request@rootsweb.com with only the word "subscribe" (without the quotation marks) in the subject line and body of the message. I have copied your message to the BC List and you may have responses from others reading it. I wish you luck in your search. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. My only direct reference to him being in Vancouver was that from Canadian Archives who kindly sent me a copy of his military record and Attestation papers: he enlisted with the 29th. Battalion British Expeditionary Force in Vancouver, having already served with the 72nd. Seaforth Highlanders of Vancouver for 2 years. He was born in Brighton, England 14. January 1893. He enlisted with the 29th. Battalion on 14th. November 1914 at the age of 19, and with 2 years previous attachment to the 72nd 'Highlanders of Vancouver, I think he must have immigrated (alone) to Canada between 1909 and 1912. The records of passenger lists are too great to search and so I wondered whether there may be any census record of him in Vancouver between 1909 and 1914 in which I might be able to find some reference to him. He did not marry and died of wounds in France in 1917. Unfortunately I am unable to budget for professional researches (he was one of eight) and so any suggestions of where I could continue searching would be most appreciated, thank you for your time, Chris Woods retired mariner, Norfolk England
