    1. [CAN-BC] Post 1901 Census -- Petition Totals to date
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All I have just finished collating the petitions for the House of Commons that I have received since 22 November. They will be mailed in the morning. The break down is as follows: Province Previous Current Total ============================== BC 2468 256 2724 AB 5380 42 5422 SK 709 131 840 MB 283 164 447 ON 2297 653 2950 PQ 681 126 807 NB 501 40 541 NS 604 141 745 PE 99 0 99 NF 208 52 260 YT 7 0 7 NT 0 0 0 NUN 0 0 0 =============================== Totals 13237 1605 14842 Muriel advises that she has to date submitted 12,581 Canadian signatures on Petitions for the Senate to which I have a further 63 to send her. She has also submitted Non-Resident petitions having 2, 132 signatures. This brings the total number of signatures on our petitions alone, since the November 2000 federal election, to 29,618. Add to this figure the estimated 16,000 signatures on petitions, letters and email to MPs, and submissions to the Expert Panel on Access of Historical Census Records sent prior to the election, we achieve a total of 45, 618 signature sent to Ottawa. This figure does not include additional unknown numbers of signatures on letters and email sent either prior to, or following the November 2000 election, or on petitions not directed through either myself or Muriel since that election. Neither does it include signatures on petitions that may have been sent by groups other than the Canada Census Committee. We have no means of tracking numbers of letters or email sent since the election. Check the Scoreboards on the Post 1901 Census Project website, at the URL following my signature for the tally of MPs and Senators, and their stated positions. The figures posted this past week have had some minor adjustments and the new totals should be online within a few days. The number of hits on the Home Page of the Post 1901 Census Project website has now exceeded 200,000 since it was started. At the moment we are receiving in excess of 10,000 hits per month. Even considering that many of those will be repeat visits and do not include visits that bypass the Home Page we are happy with the numbers. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Joan asked if I had any more information regarding the "first national genealogy conference" to be held in the fall of 2002. I received the following message from Brian Gilchrists this morning. =========================== From: "gilchrists" <gilchrists@idirect.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2002 7:19 AM Subject: Re: "Canadian Conference" Good morning all! It seems there is some mis-interpretation about the way the Globe and Mail might have used the term "conference" in the article in last Saturday'spaper. The 'conference' [which my informant has called a "symposium"] is currently being scheduled for the end of October and will be by invitation only. I am told that the those being invited will include representatives of the Provincial genealogical societies, archivists, librarians, and other "movers and shakers" in the genealogical community from across the country. One of the goals of the symposium, as I currently understand it, will be to inform the invited participants about the Project, its objectives, content, access, etc. The whole process is still in the developmental stage. I am sure that we will be hearing more from the new 'Canadian Genealogy Centre' in the near future. This is an exciting concept, and has the potential to be a great resource for all of us. Cheers - J. Brian Gilchrist =============================== Insofar as the creation of a Canadian Genealogy Center is concerned, I have been aware for some time that something of this sort was being considered but this is the first indication I have had about it actually coming to pass. It is indeed great news for all of us. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. I see that there have already been postings out regarding the online survey being conducted by the National Archives of Canada on what people would like to see available from the Archives. I would encourage all to check out this survey and to submit their responses to it. The URL for it is http://accessible.archives.ca <snip> THE CANADIAN GENEALOGY CENTRE The National Archives, in co-operation with Canadian Heritage, is also developing an new initiative to better serve Canadian genealogists: The Canadian Genealogy Centre. Theis Centre will offer services, advice and research tools in both official languages; it will also serve as a portal to all genealogical resources held in Canada using the community-building power of the Internet. It will resond to the rising demand for seamless access to genealogical services and digitized collections. Genealogists, who make up a large part of the National Archives' clientele, will hve so much to choose from! This ambitious project will be carried out over three years. there are already plans to start up a Web site in the fall of 2002, when Canada's first national genealogy conference will be held. Gordon: Do you have any details on this? As I will be in Ontario during the Fall, I'd love to know more Thanks for passing all this on to us In establishing the Canadian Genealogy Centre, the Archives will be working in partnership with other archives, libraries and historical societies. The Archives will also hold many consultations with its target clientele to ensure that the Centre meets the needs of geographically dispersed Canadians to access records and services across Canada. ============================== These two articles demonstrate that not all government departments are following the dictates of Statistics Canada. We look forward to the early addition of the 1906 Census and the orderly addition and release of all subsequent Census records in accordance with Regulation 6(d) of the Privacy Act. We look forward also to the Report of Environics Research Group on the Town Hall Meetings and Focus Groups regarding public access to the 1906 and 1911 Census Records. That Report was to be presented to Statistics Canada by 15 February 2002. We will be looking for it to be made available to the public and have given notice to Statistics Canada that if it is not released within thirty days of receipt I will be submitting an Access to Information Request for it. 3. Hi to all, As for the latest release of films from the archives, they can be ordered immediately from your local LDS, in fact future films have already been filmed by the Church. So if you can't get them right now from your local library try the LDS. I'm also sure you would be able to access them in the B.C. Archives. 3. Hi Jennifer The 1981 [Death Registration] films are not available at Cloverdale, copies have been ordered but delivery not expected for a couple of months. They should also be available through the FHC. Now that they are more twenty years old they there is no reason to restrict them.
