Hi; I am new to this list and searching for any information on my wife's grandfather John Glasgow Robertson. He homesteaded in Saskatchewan in 1894, was treated for typhoid at a hospital in Medicine Hat, Alberta after 1894. We understand that he was employed by a smelter in Trail B C later in the 1890's. We do know that in 1899 he was in Okanogan Washington U S A. Can SKS advise if it is possible to Grandfather's employment in Trail and how one would go about this. Many Thanks in advance Malcolm Shaw, Calgary, Alberta

Hi Viv, You are wonderful, It does look like this could be the same person.that June was searching for. I can take a look at this one - I am just leaving the house, just need the coat and shoes. I never even considered this spelling - though usually I go through any variations I can think of, It was the 3rd Anniversary of my cousins death,we were the closest in age - everyone else much older. I was trying to keep very busy with lookups etc - but obviously not to clear headed - although I was able to help with a few requests. Thanks for finding this. June: I was surprised to find, when I just checked the National Archives of Canada's postmaster database, http://www.archives.ca/02/02010902_e.html that there is no one named LUMBER who was a postmaster. Is it possible that they actually had a store in which they hired someone else to act as the postmaster? I know if a company owned a general store, with a post office in it, and hired someone to work in it regularly, the hired person actually doing the work of running the post office was the postmaster. Or is it possible that one of the daughters married and worked in their post office? Another possibility is that the name was misspelled when input to the database. Good Morning Liz, I just finished with the Insurance Adjuster - and will be heading out to the Libraries soon. Did you want me to search the newspapers for a possible news story about the house fire at 2767 Turner Street? As well - should I take a look through further City Directories - for Felix C. Lewis ? I am going to Special Collections at the Vancouver Library - to take a look at some pictures - should I see if there is one for the F.C. Lewis and E.A. Hunt Barbers at 237 E. Hastings Street. ** Do you have the Birth Reg for Mabel - the Marriage for Mabel and Felix - and the Marriage for Mabel and Raymond. If not - would you like copies.? Stella sstanger@sfu.ca Member, Canada Census Committee Good Morning Liz, I had planned on getting in touch last night - when I came back from the Library. But - visitors came - and didn't leave till near midnight. I chose a bad time to visit the library - most of the reader - printers were in use. I did manage to get one long enough to search the microfilmed Henderson Directories - I prefer the hard copies found at the N.W. Public Library - and may visit there - for a better look. The film for 1917 - was not on the shelf - and not in the filing box. I will take a look at the hard copy of the Directory. When you mentioned Empress Barber Shop - I thought of theEmpress Hotel on Hastings Street - but of course the address did not match. I Checked the Directory for 2638 E. PENDER Street. - Alfred Parson - residence. I checked the Directory for 2767 TURNER Street - listing - 1915 - Occupied - 1916 - Felix C. Lewis - 1917 film not found 1918 lists Vacant. Felix Lewis - address at 731 Glen Drive - over the years - one year listed at 732 - This Felix Lewis - is listed as helper one year - listed as laborer - all at B.C. Sugar Refining [ This must be the Felix Lewis - listed at the B.C. Govt Vital Events - that you found] The following information conflicts with the information that you have. The East Pender Street address - is in a residential area - all homes. Felix C. LEWIS- is listed in the Hendersons Directory - 1916 - residence 2767. Turner Street. Occupation: Barber - Shop Name: F.C.LEWIS AND E.A. HUNT - Barbers - "237 East Hastings Street - Vancouver. I have checked - there is no listing for Empress Barbers - this shop may have been known - by the location by the Empress Hotel. rather than the actual shop name. *** This is in the Strathcona Area. Just 1/4 block east of Main Street. Corner - Bank - alley way - Empress Hotel {Empress Rooms - ground floor - pub] Hotel Rooms , upstairs.. The old Mount Shasta Cafe - was next to the pub - with the hotel rooms upstairs - since the address of the Barber Shop - the barber shop may have been in the space later occupied by the Shasta - or next to one another. I need to search the Directories again. This area has a poor reputation over the past number of years - although there is a lovely little enclave of very old homes .beautifully kept. A joy to see. At one time - it was a nice multi cultural neighbourhood - the first place that many stayed - while attempting to get established in Vancouver - It is quite possible that Felix may have cut my stepfathers hair - or my uncles etc. HOpe the above is of some help. I will be visiting N.W. Library - and will check the 1917 Directory . Are there any newspapers on line or film for White Rock at that time? Her two grandsons Robin and Eric Brown born 1941 and 1942 went to Canada i guess in the 1960's and i would love to get a hold of them.. Hi Gloria, Can't remember if I mentioned the following in a previous posting. Possibly a very long shot - but may be worth a try. Good Morning Ines, I searched the HendersonDirectories for the Bakery - Not on Broardway - but on Heather Street - just west of Broadway -in the direction of VGH. It appears that the name of the bakery was. J. FERGUSON , Bakery - 2545 Heather Street, Vancouver - J. Ferguson, Baker. Checked up to 1940 - and the bakery was still there. James C. FERGUSON - and Alice B. FERGUSON - lived at the rear of 2547 Heather Street, Vancouver B.C. Heather Hall - was at 2547 Heather Street. I am going to check further - My memory might be playing games with me, but I believe that the Ferguson Bakery was quite well known, Don't know if they re located - I might be thinking along the wrong track - will check this one out. in later Directories. In the Obituary for Rosannah Boxall - in 1974 - it mentions that she is survived by nephew George Campbell and wife Grizel and sons, as well as nephew and niece Ernest Gerguson- and Margaret Spence - as well as other cousins. Do you know any of these family members - if so,contacting them may be helpful . They may know if and when James and Alice may have passed away. Edith passed away in 1958 - her son Ernest Boxall - Vancouver, may have information . There are a number of Boxalls listed in the white pages - including an Ernest. I am going to take a look at the following marriage.will send it out to you. It will give me an idea of the ages - which will help find the death registrations. There is an Alice Ferguson who passed away - age 47 in 1948 . No Alice B's come up. Of course - she could have passed away after 1981. Good Morning Diana, While at the Library yesterday I checked the Hendersons Direcories for the 729 Hamilton Street Address ;the years 1937 - 1938 - 1939 - 1940. 1937 - listed to J. Davies. 1938 - 729 Hamilton Street - - listed to J. Davies - 731 Hamilton Street - listed to J.Davies and Son General Contractors - J. Davies and Central Pntg {painting - printing ??] Co. 1939 - 729 Listed to J. Davies. 1940 -729 Listed to J. Davies. I will be going out to search the hard copies of the directories - rather than the microfilm -much easier - as there is no wait for a reader. and will check again. I did a search for the name A. J. Lidgate - with 0 Lidgate names - also searched Lindgate etc. Will search the hard copies - for the years mentioned - and surrounding time frame. ** 1.If A.J. Lidgate was living in the City in that time frame. - He may have been staying in a rooming house - or hotel in the area. I am going to take a look to see what was on Hamilton Street at the time. In this case - it is quite possible that his name would not be listed in the Henderson or other directory. 1. Unless a person was a permanent resident - they may not be listed , many people moved about - even if A.J. lived at an address for a year - he may not have been in the location when the directory information was taken. 2. Some people living in rooming houses - even permanent residents of hotels - may not have wanted their names listed in the City Directory - it was not compulsory [although some thought it was]. 3. Some people who owned homes - where they may have rented out sleeping rooms [ quite common in those days] may not have given the names of other occupants of the home - other than their own family. perhaps for fear of property tax implications - licensing implications. Is it possible that A.J. Lidgate - could be James Alexander Lidgate - age 85 years - deceased - 1985 - Vancouver ? **** In the early 1940's we had the National Registration of All Canadians - over the age of 16 years. This information is available - the cost $48.15 - returned if no information found. http://www.statcan.ca/english/IPS/Data/93C0006.htm http://www.tbaytel.net/bmartin/natreg.htm Not A.J. - Have you searched the National Archive of Canada - http://www.archives.ca/02/020106_e.html There are 3 Lidgate Surnames listed - Soldiers of WW1. Sorry I couldn't find A.J. - will give it another try. Hi Lesley, I am going to the library - in a short while - I see that Pam is going to pick up the registrations for you. Are you interested in the obituaries ? I can take a look at these - if you like - it only takes a few miniutes. I don't usually photo copy these - unless they appear to hold much information. Most of the older ones - are not well filmed - and others are usually quite small.but sometimes mention other family that may be unknown. Good Morning Liz, I had planned on getting in touch last night - when I came back from the Library.
