    1. [CAN-BC] Post 1901 Census - Writing letters
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. Our past efforts in encouraging all to write letters and email to all MPs and Senators have been tremendously successful, and we thank all that done so. We have had indications that in the offices of many of our elected and appointed representatives, messages regarding support for access to Historic Census Records far outnumber messages received on any other subject. From this we can safely assume that all Members of Parliament and Senators are now most certainly aware of our feelings on this subject. We have also had indications that, with a new Minister of Industry, some things are once again happening behind the scenes. As such it is perhaps time now for a slight change in tactics to allow those working on our behalf the opportunity to see some results from their efforts. We still encourage all to write letters to their own Member of Parliament, to those Senators that represent the area in which they live, and of course the applicable Ministers. We would ask, however, for the time being at least, you restrict your letters to your own representatives, and do not send blanket letters and email to all of them. A few word about your letters and email. We have been advised that in some cases, messages to our representatives have crossed the boundary from encouraging them to support our point of view, to harassment and demands that they do so. This kind of message only serves to get their back up and even if they were inclined to see things our way, they get angry and say "To h*** with them!" I have been copied on some letters, that had they been directed to me, would have caused this reaction from myself. Our purpose in writing is to get our representatives to join in our effort, not to antagonize or annoy them. In that regard we should keep the following in mind: * Be polite and respectful in your comments. * If your purpose in writing is to inform, keep your comments factual. * If your purpose is to request their support -- request it -- don't demand it. * Above all, do not let your message be a personal attack on any individual because they might have a different point of view than you do. I repeat -- be polite and respectful. In this age of electronic communication it is easy to zip off an email and send it to many people at the same time. I confess to being guilty of frequently doing this myself. We have been reminded lately, however, that many of our representatives would put more stock in, and more readily pay attention to, an individual letter from a constituent (particularly a hand written one) than they would to 100 email from non-constituents. With this in mind we suggest for the time being, rather than using email you send personal letters via Canada Post. If mailed in Canada there is no postage required to send a letter or parcel to any Member of Parliament or Senator. If your handwriting is legible (mine isn't) use pen and ink to write it. If your handwriting is not legible by all means use your typewriter or word processor to print it out before mailing. If you receive a response that shows a different position than those shown on the MP or Senator Scoreboards, please forward a copy to me so that their position can be brought up to date. Thank you all for your support. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Watts gordon_watts@telus.net Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC http://globalgenealogy.com/Census en français http://globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index_f.htm Permission to forward without notice is granted.

    2. David Fancy
    3. Hi Jan The short answer is NO, birth records less than 100 years old are not available to the public. BUT You could apply for a Genealogical Certificate [they are expensive - $50.00 each] if you can meet the criteria. For more information see the site at http://www.vs.gov.bc.ca/genealogy/birth.html Regards David On Tue, 12 Mar 2002 08:11:53 -0800, J. 3. Hello, I have searched the Vital Statistics site online, but it only releases birth info to 1901. The birth I am looking for is later than that. Is the info available to the public, but just not on the website? If I were in Victoria, could I go to the archives and search for it? Thanks in advance for any answers, Jan.

    1. [CAN-BC] UPDATE ON NORMAN MORISON SESQUICENTENNIAL
    2. Joan McIlmoyl Cleghorn
    3. The HBC barque, 'Norman Morison' made 3 voyages from England to Victoria arriving in 1850, 1851 and 1853. Many of the original southern Vancouver Island pioneer settlers came on these trips. In 1953, for the centennial of the arrival of the 'Norman Morison' on her last trip to Victoria, a large dinner was held to commemorate this event. Descendants of the original pioneers who arrived in Victoria on this trip were invited. As next year will be the 150th anniversary (sesquicentennial) of that final arrival, we are planning a celebration on Saturday, August 16, 2003 to include descendants of passengers of all 3 trips. A brunch is being planned where photos, mementos, family histories, etc. can be displayed and after the brunch, time can be spent viewing these displays and meeting the various descendants. Perhaps a speaker or two could give some stories either of the voyages or the times after the arrival. This could also be an opportunity to set up family reunions of the various descendant groups on Saturday night and Sunday. I'm planning a reunion for descendants of my three passengers on the first, second and third trips of the Morison (Henry WAIN, George MILLS and Henry SIMPSON. Ideas, suggestions and assistance for this event would be gratefully received. For further information please e-mail the Norman Morison 150th Anniversary Committee at joanmc@joansjoy.ca and check our web page at www.joansjoy.ca/Reunions Joan McIlmoyl Cleghorn, U.E. 1. [CAN-BC] Vital Events films
    2. Pam Fairweather Thomson
    3. Hi, Stella sent me some information the other day about the collection of Vital Events microfilms held at Simon Fraser University. It indicated that they were not going to add any films to the collection. I checked this out and received an email from the collections person at SFU library. She said that the original collection was purchased with a grant and that they don't plan to add any other films, as it doesn't seem to be something which is being used by SFU students and faculty. As far as I know, the films which are already there will continue to be available. Has anyone heard if Cloverdale Library or the Vancouver Public Library have the newest releases yet? 1. [CAN-BC] As Promised -- THE BIG PUSH IS ON -- Please Help!!!
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. --- MEMO MAY BE FORWARDED OR TRANSLATED --- To all - whether students, church members, genealogy and hiostorical groups, or just interested researchers:- THE BIG PUSH is one and we hope all who wish the 1911 Canadian census released will assist -- your help is needed for petitions, letters to both Senators and Members of Parliament. Newspaper publicity is needed -- ask your hometown editor to post a column -- and my e-mail address may be given muriel_davidson@sympatico.ca Bill S-12 by Senator Lorna Milne is in third Reading stage, some debate and then hopefully a positive VOTE. Following Parliamentary procedure the Bill S-12 would then go to House of Commons for approval. At present, BOTH House of Commons and Senate petitions are needed. When the Bill passes in the Senate, very possibly we will only need House of Commons after that -- I promise to let all know. During the past few weeks, NO petitions were received from Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, Nunavut/Yukon/N.W. Territories - could we change this fact???? To send letters, Gordon Watts has sample letters at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/ Click on HOMEPAGE Addresses and wording is there -- save to disk or Copy and Paste. Postage is FREE and many respond better to something in an envelope! However, you might prefer to write your own letter -- your wishes, searches, lost ones, genetic diseases, but SIGN THE LETTER with complete address. Believe it or not, the same letter will do for all -- just change the name! Murray Calder will have his glorious ONE hour of debate due to the committee handling -- 13 other Bills dumped in 15 minutes!!! If anyone has watched CPAC they will note that Murray Calder does NOT look like a farmer -- but he is -- complete with a huge wheelbarrow which we wish to have filled --- by YOU -- the ONES WHO DESIRE CENSUS! Download census petitions -- a colourful sign is also there for your usage http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Petition.htm Adobe Acrobat is FREE -- acts as a reader -- must be downloaded. Petitions are in English and French Senate and House of Commons, plus English Non-Resident. Mail to either Gordon or myself -- we share petitions! If we all give this ONE HUGE PUSH before Easter, It will help -- there is a committee which ascertains the petitions in Ottawa -- approves them!! Students may use this as a different social science subject -- just add the name of the school so credit may be given. Let's SPRING INTO ACTION before Spring!!! Your help is Needed NOW!!! Muriel M.
