Of interest, was the picture of Ernest SMITH, VC of the WW II Seaforth Highlanders of Canada on the front page of "The Globe And Mail" re Canadians visit to the town of Ortona, Italy. With fourteen days to go to November 11 th, this would be an excellent time to remember our veterans and casualties of WW I and II. Looking back, after WW II, the Brechin United church (Nanaimo) had a special ceremony to recognize those members involved in war service including those that didn't return such as Gordon FARRAS and John W. WHITE. Some of the gals were: Margaret BEST - Rose LEWIS - Kathie YOUNG - Barbara COTTLE The Brechin boys ranged from Tom AKENCLOSE to William ZELLEY and included such names as Earl JOHNSON, Donald SIM, Duncan MCGREGOR and others such as the LIGHTFOOT name. Hi Pam, If no one volunteers to go to a library and get you photocopy of this Death Registration, then try Random Acts Of Genealogical Kindness at: http://www.raogk.org/ If no luck there then try Don Crawfords site at http://members.shaw.ca/copies/ You need the all 3 sets of numbers whichever way you get the photocopy. I have no interest in Mr. Crawfords business except as a very satisfied customer. Best of luck ............... Cheers, Bridget on Vancouver Island. To all:- Please check both the following scoreboard:- http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index6.htm At present we have 178 GOLD symbols meaning positive answers should there be another bill for release of the 1911 census records. At present, only Nova Scotia and Yukon are 100% in favour of census release -- but by morning this could also include MANITOBA. Readers of the various lists should check to see if his or her Member of Parliament is in favour of census release -- if not, ask the person -- we accept quoted replies but prefer ones that are emailed directly to us. There is a great deal of work to be done in both Ontario and Quebec. Two-part messages are available to be sent to MPs in Quebec -- English and French -- we need to lessen the 49 BLUE (unanswered/no reply) -- although messages have been sent. There could be a bill for release of the 1911 census -- we have worked before and since March 1999 -- so let's combine our efforts and contact every one -- a copy is requested. PETITIONS are needed -- these are OUR voices in both the House of Commons and Senate of Canada. Download from http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/index.htm/ The Senate and House of Commons are for Canadians and both may be signed -- the Non-Resident are for friends from other places. Please, let's see what we can do between now and the end of November -- more news coming as provinces go 100%. Muriel M. Dear Listers, I wonder if there are descendants of Martin Blatchford still living in B.C.? I happened to come across the 1886 burial record of his daughter Eleanor Amelia in Camp Hill Cemetery, Halifax, NS. Her surname is presently transcribed as Blahford but I hope this will soon be corrected. Martin, with the Royal Engineers, was posted to Halifax at this time. I believe it's his death shown in the BC vital events in 1915. Although I'm not linked with the family, I'd enjoy hearing from any descendants. Joan Bedford, NS

To All BC Listers: I had mentally written a posting to inform you all about Bill 68 (the Bill to create the authority to run the Land Titles Offices throughout the Province) and the media campaign that was being launched to try to have it revised. Being busy for the past few days, I didn't get it done until this morning. Before I got a chance to post it, I was notified that the Bill had passed 3rd reading on Tuesday! The concerns I had along with historians, archivists, First Nations, etc. were that no inventory/catalogue has been done of our land records; no preservation program is in place nor plans for one; and, the new authority created by Bill 68 has the power to destroy any records not deemed to have historic value - yet no historian or archivist was to be appointed to the Board! As well, even as a government office, it has been difficult enough for the general public to gain access to any of these records for research purposes (unless you won the lottery!)<g>. Now that it will be under the control of a private 'authority', I suspect public access at no or minimum cost will be impossible. I took part in a press conference late last week with representatives from UVIC's History Dept. & Law Faculty, the Archivists' Assoc of BC, and the Victoria Genealogical Society (me). We made the news on the radio, a small bit in the Victoria Times-Colonist and an entire column in the Vancouver Sun on Saturday by Stephen Hume. We were planning another media event in the vault to actually show some of the records there when we found out that Bill 68 is a fait accompli<sigh>. I'm uncertain if there's anything we can do at this point but will keep you informed just in case. We really did try! 8-( Joan Joan McIlmoyl Cleghorn, U.E. Thanks Stella. I should have thought of that. The latest Latten entry I have is 1822-so long ago. I could try phoning those Lattens. I notice there are early (1870/1880's) Maguire births around Nanaimo. Good Morning John, Just searching the Provincial Archive of B.C. Vital Events Index. Finds a marriage of Minnie LATTEN to John THEW - 1888 - New Westminster B.C. Minnie THEW -age 48 - passed away - 1911 - in Beaton B.C. John A. Thew - age 60 passed away 1923 in Naksup. Also: 2 Male LATTEN deaths: Robert John - age 65 - 1956 in New Westminster - George Lloyd - age 79 - 1980 In Victoria BC. 1 female: Letitia -age 93 - 1973 -in Coquitlam B.C. Searching the Online White Pages Directory Mytelus.com http://www.mytelus.com/phonebook/index.do Finds only 2 LATTEN surnames in British Columbia - 1 in Surrey B.C. ,1 in Armstrong B.C. Perhaps the Prayer book that you found - belonged at one time to one of the above. Not everyone feels - family possessions are of any value - and perhaps upon the death -the items were disposed of in one way or another. At least this book was not destroyed like many have been. *speaking from experience and great sadness. I came across a 1791 Book of Common Prayer in Vancouver. Inside the cover are some notes. Charles Maguire died Feb 10 1851. Then about 15 entries about the LATTEN family in Norwich, England. Such as; Martha Latten daughter of Joseph and Martha Latten was born Feb 18 1769 at seven in the morning. Martha Latten died Oct 6th buried 1822 at St. Martans Palace Church. John William Henry Cooper and Sarah Latten were married May 4 1797 (at St. Andrew, Norwich). I wonder who was the Vancouver connection. John

Hi John. The reference to returning consent forms to the Information Commissioner has been on the lists to which we regularly post our Census access information. Obviously you have missed it. We strongly urge all 90 complainants who received the response of the Information Commissioner to our complaints to complete and return the consent form as soon as possible. This will allow the Information Commissioner to proceed to the court on our behalf. As indicated in the consent form no one will be required to attend the court hearing unless they personally wish to, and then it would be at their own expense. Please complete your consent form and return it. Thank you. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Greetings all. With three Gold Ticks of support added to the MPs Scoreboard this morning thanks to MP responses to Adele Turner the total as I write this is now 169. With the election we lost 48 Gold Ticks because of MPs who either did not run again, or who did not retain their seat. Since then we have regained 29 Gold Ticks. A number of MPs who had not responded to our questions of support for the past six years have now responded - several of them positively. If the trend of responses continues as it has been doing we will have soon regained all of the Gold Ticks lost at the time of the election. Keep writing your MPs and sending us their responses. Your letters and email are making a difference. Happy Hunting. Gordon A.
