We echo your comments. I always think of John Morgan as being Scottish (wonder why?) but he was apparently born in Wales. There will be a special half hour tribute to John, from the RCAF(arce), on Monday evening on the CBC. Check your local listings, as I'm not absolutely certain what time it is on, 8:30 / 9pm EST ... half hour later in NFLD !! Toni, Ontario.

    1. Arthur Lane at Cowichan
    2. Carol
    3. John, my family had a summer place right beside Wilcuma Lodge (note spelling)in the late 50's and purchased in the early 60's 5 acres of land that had been a part of the Lodge property. I grow up there so I am *Very* familiar with it. :-) Arthur Lane built the lodge but has/had not lived there for *many many* years. The lodge was designed by Maclure. If you go to http://www.maltwood.uvic.ca/arts-crafts/Wilson.html you will see another Maclure designe dhome and it looks very much like the lodge. It is a wonderfully old building with great gardens which has sadly fallen into major disrepair over the years. In the 1950's the lodge was owned by the Addingtons (SP?) - its had about 12 owners since. It at one time had a pool and a pub and was a nice place to stay. Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra were visitors to the lodge - they liked to fish in Cowichan Bay. The Bay at the time was a fisherman's gold mine - sadly that is no longer the case either. This death record may be worth looking up as it fits: Name:Arthur Edward Cecil Lane Place: Duncan Reg. Number:1947-09-002749 Date:1947 3 2 (Yr/Mo/Day) Age:75 Death Microfilm #: B13193 (GSU # 2032477 If this is him I am sure an obit would have appeared in the Duncan Newspaper - not sure if the Cowichan Leader was around at that time or not. Sorry I can not tell you much more about Mr. Lane or Captain Lane as my mother called him, other than I know the lodge was/is up for sale now and you may be able to find a photo of it on a realtors site. I know there were photos and a bit of it history on it in the Duncan real estate papers this summer. I did a google search and found the website that mentioned the lodge and Captain Lane. The old photos and family names on the web site brought back some great memories of the way things were in The Bay when I was a child. Noted a few items on the web site that may be open to debate. One is the spelling of the lodge name - the other is in regards to new development on what had been the polo field and where the Water Tower home stood. It was just a water tower and not a weird home when I was growing up.:-) I grazed my horses on what I suspect was the polo field. As far back as my family can recall the polo field and water tower belonged to the Lambourne Inn - which was another grand old lodge that burned down in the 60's. If the water tower was once part of Wilcuma it must have been sold off to Lambourne in the very early 1900's as the Lambourne Inn was of the same vintage as Capt. Lane's lodge, if not older. The Lambourne Inn was located on property right beside the lodge - so it may be possible that the two have been confused? If you contact me privately I can give you info on the family who has owned the Lambourne property for as long as I can recall. Some of them still live on part of the property and they may be able to set the record straight in regards to the whether or not the water tower was ever a part of Wilcuma. Carol Thanks for the trip down memory lane! ___________________________ Date: Thu, 18 Nov 2004 20:23:42 -0800 From: "john burns" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Subject: Arthur Lane at Cowichan Does anyone have any information on Arthur Lane a British Remittance man who lived at Cowichan Bay. 1. Fw: access to Saskatchewan vital records
    2. Carol Lylyk
    3. Posted on Alberta Family History Society website today Sent: Thursday, November 18, 2004 7:18 PM Subject: access to Saskatchewan vital records - Hi Folks, For those with Saskatchewan interests comes a news release from the Provincial Government today. Joe K. Saskatoon, SK November 18, 2004 Health - 726 GENEALOGICAL INDEXES AVAILABLE TO SASKATCHEWAN PEOPLE IN CENTENNIAL YEAR Amendments to The Vital Statistics Act will make it easier for Saskatchewan people to research their heritage. The Saskatchewan Government today introduced The Vital Statistics Amendment Act (No. 2), 2004. The act will create the authority for Saskatchewan Health to compile, publish and distribute genealogical indexes of births, marriages and deaths as a support to people researching their history. The year range for the indexes will be developed in the act regulations at a later date; in other jurisdictions the range is typically 95 to 120 years for births; 20 to 70 years for deaths; and 50 to 80 years for marriages. "Saskatchewan people are proud of their heritage, and interest in genealogy is great in this province, and among Saskatchewan descendants across the world, "Health Minister John Nilson said. "Next year is Saskatchewan's centennial year. Our government is pleased to provide this timely step to help people explore and celebrate the lives of ancestors who have bu ilt our province! ce. "With The Vital Statistics Amendment Act (No. 2), 2004, Saskatchewan joins a majority of provinces that allow public access to birth, marriage and death registrations. The indexes will be published and available on the Saskatchewan Health web site, beginning with the birth index in the fall of 2005. -30- For More Information, Contact: Pete Paczko Health Regina Phone: (306) 787-4083 --------------------------------- Post your free ad now! 3. I have a George Roe Nicholson who was born 26 Feb 1873 Dublin, Ireland. He emigrated to Canada at an unknown date. He married Susan Donnelly 23 May 1906 in Vancouver, BC. When he enlisted in the Canadian Army 2 May 1916, he gave his address as Clayton, R.R.#3, Cloverdale, and occupation as farmer. I am assuming he moved to BC in his twenties, and am trying to find him in the 1901 Canadian census. However I cannot find any reference to Cloverdale in the census index of places. Can anyone with more experience of this census suggest in which district he may have been living? Thanks Jon Whiting in UK

    1. Post 1901 Census -- URGENT S-18 UPDATE
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. URGENT S-18 UPDATEGreetings All. FYI Gordon ----- Original Message ----- From: Paul, Jeff: SEN To: [email protected] Subject: URGENT S-18 UPDATE Hi there everyone There have been some important develoments in S-18 and Senator Milne needs your help. As many of you may know, Conservative Senator Lynch-Staunton took the adjournment of the debate of the bill yesterday. This means that no progress can be made on the bill until he speaks. We have found out that he will not be in the Senate next week and that he does not intend to speak on the bill until the government promises to hold hearings on a private Senator's bill that Senator Stratton still hasn't even introduced. This development has the potential to delay progress on the bill by several weeks. Senator Milne needs your help to put pressure on the Conservatives to move ahead with S-18. We need people to write to: Senator John Lynch-Staunton: [email protected] Senator Terrence Stratton: [email protected] Deputy Leader of the Conservative Party in the Senate You can also call the Senate at 1-800-267-7362 and ask for Sen. Stratton's office or Sen. Lynch-Staunton's office and explain to their staff that you want to see action on this bill. Senator Stratton is from Manitoba and Sen. Lynch-Staunton is from Quebec. If you are from those provinces a call may be especially helpful. You should urge both of these Senators to allow S-18 to move forward, and encourage Sen. Lynch-Staunton to speak on the bill as soon as possible. We also need to lean on Stephen Harper to get him to realize that his Senate Caucus is holding up a bill that is supported by the Conservative Party. If your MP is Conservative, I strongly encourage you to write to him or her and ask them to put pressure on the Conservative Senators who are holding up the bill. We can't do much from our end because Conservatives can tell us to go to hell without there being any consequences. They can't do the same thing to the general pubilc. Good luck you guys. I hope that once again we can have your support. Jeff Paul Policy Advisor Office of the Hon. Lorna Milne Ph: (613) 947-9744 Cell: (613) 715-2965

    1. Post 1901 Census - S-18 Hansard extracts posted.
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. FYI. I have posted on the Post 1901 Census Project website extracts from Hansard for Second Reading of Bill S-18. The major speaker in Wednesdays debate was Senator Gerald J. Comeau who has lived up to his well deserved RED X of opposition to the access we seek for Historic Census. He obviously does not go along with the leadership of his party, the Conservative Party of Canada, who have expressed support for that access. I have not yet counted up his many, many references to promises or the breaking of promises but I intend to. We obviously have not got through to him that NO PROMISE has ever been made that confidentiality of information provided to Census would last FOREVER. No such 'promise' exists now, nor has one ever existed. No one has been able to provide a single piece of documented evidence that any such promise was ever made. Not the Chief Statistician, not the former Privacy Commissioners, nor any of a number of parliamentarians that insist on referring to such a 'promise'. One wonders what part of "NO SUCH PROMISE WAS EVER MADE" do they not understand? I have several times challenged those who insist on making references to 'promises' of confidentiality that lasts 'forever'. I have asked them to 'Show me the promise'. I am still waiting. In response to someone who questioned why Senator Comeau opposed the access we seek he stated: "I have no objection whatsoever to release the 1911 census if in fact the current laws on the book dictate that the release is authorized". His speech in the Senate Wednesday certainly does not support this statement. Senator Comeau has been advised several times, as have all Senators and MPs that existing legislation makes specific provisions for access to information obtained through Census or Survey, by any person or body, 92 years after collection. They have been quoted chapter and verse regarding clauses in the Access to Information and Privacy Acts, and Privacy Regulations that authourize that access. The Honourable Senator Comeau has chosen to ignore the information provided to him. I will not elaborate further here regarding Senator Comeau's speech to the Senate. Read it for yourself. I do NOT suggest that anyone write to the Honourable Senator Comeau berating him for his position -- you are unlikely to change his position. Should anyone feel absolutely compelled to write him I urge them to be polite and respectful. Do not let emotions run away with you, and do not be abusive. Be factual in the information you provide to counter the points he makes in his speech. Further Hansard extracts of the Bill S-18 debate in the Senate will be posted as soon as they become available. 1. Post 1901Census - Senator Scoreboard revised
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. In a review of the current list of Senators I found that a number have retired in the past six months, or are about to retire this month, and one has resigned. Those Senators that have retired or resigned are Senators Ed Lawson (BC), D. Roche (AB), R. Kroft (MB), J-R Gauthier (ON), G. Beaudoin (QC), B. Robertson (NB), and E. Rossiter (PEI). Retiring this month are Laurier LaPierre (ON) and Yves Morin. There are currently 13 vacancies for Senators. I have updated the Senator's Scoreboard to reflect these changes. The Scoreboard Totals have been brought up-to-date as well. A reminder that we are seeking your thoughts about Bill S-18. Full details about this new Census Bill are available at the Post 1901 Census Project website at www.globalgenealogy.com/Census . Briefly, this Bill would provide full, unrestricted public access after 92 years, with no added conditions or restrictions, for Censuses from 1911 to 2001. For Censuses from 2006 and later it would impose an 'informed consent' clause that would require each respondent to the Census to give permission for their information to be released 92 years later. There is a provision that would require a review of the effect of the 'informed consent' clause after two Censuses had been conducted. When sending us your opinions please copy in Senator Milne at [email protected] Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 3. I grow up not far from where this family lived. The schools he would have attended were: grade 1-7 Bench School and Grade 8-10 would have been George Bonner in Mill Bay (yes that was the closest) and Grade 11-12 Cowichan Secondary in Duncan - that is if he went to public schools. If Anglican they would have been closer to St. Johns in Cobble Hill than St. Andrews in Cowichan Station - but not by much so both are worth checking. If Catholic the old St. Ann's church would have been the closest. Hope this is of some help. 3. I'm not clear on what information the student wants on this man, but it sounds like it could be an interesting project. Does he want to know about what his life was like, what kind of family he grew up in, what he did for a living til he went to war? Does he want to trace his relations? The family's origins? Or does he just want to get statistics about the man and his family? The first thing to know, is what you WANT to know. Some of the original suggestions are expensive options, either in time or in money, but they are the ones that may give you the most detailed information about a life. And it's the details that bring the story alive. 3. Hi Beverly, The Vancouver Island Regional Library on Commercial St. in Nanaimo has micro-filmed copies of old newspapers and a lovely film reader/copier. I have used it myself in locating old Obits. Go to Random Acts Of Genealogical Kindness at : http://www.raogk.org/bcolumbia.htm and see if you can find a volunteer to find this for you. If no one offers to get it let me know and I will book the reader ahead of time, and go up to Nanaimo and see if I can find it for you. I don't live in Nanaimo, but am there at least once every couple of weeks. Good luck, Cheers, Bridget GlamFHS # 5865 I transcribe for www.freebmd.rootsweb.com I use www.archivecdbooks.ca to help in my research ----- Original Message ----- From: "Beverly Preston" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, November 09, 2004 11:38 PM Subject: [CAN-BC] obit 1957 Naniamo > Good evening all... > > I am looking for an obit for my great grandfather.
