    1. other ideas for missing names
    2. elista
    3. Hi List, I was going to ask the list if writing to the church in Vancouver would be of any help, as the people I am looking for are Roman Catholic. So I had a look on the web-site for the Archdicese of Vancouver, only to find that their records are not open for genealogical purposes. I looked for sacramental records, only to find that the archivist has closed for the next year, due to a back log to clear up. So much for that angle of research. Any suggestions? Thanks, Judy Alberta [email protected]

    1. Post 1901 Census - Legal action by Information Commissioner
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All My thanks to Norma Brown for forwarding to me her letter, dated 3 December 2004, from the Information Commissioner's office advising that his legal action on our behalf is under way. The pertinent sections of that letter state: "I write this letter to inform you that on November 9, 2004 the Information Commissioner of Canada filed an application for review under the Federal Court Rules. This application, filed in the Federal Court as T-1996-04, relates to the refusal by the head of Statistics Canada (the Minister of Industry) to disclose the records you requested unde the Access to Information Act." "On November 29, 2004, the Federal Court directed that this notice of application be amended to include the matter of the refusal to disclose the 1911 census records to 95 other individuals who had complained to the Information Commissioner of Canada between July 7, 2003 and October 5, 2004." It is expected that the other 95 complainants will be receiving similar letters although as I write this I have not yet received my own. The letter also advises that complainants may appear as a party in the case but anyone choosing to do so would be required to pay their own expenses. A form letter was included for complainants to advise whether or not they wished to participate in the Application. Those receiving such letters should complete and return them as soon as possible. The letter also indicates that on the website of the Information Commissioner (www.infocom.gc.ca) there will soon be a folder added entitled "Litigation" which will contain information concerning the various stages of the proceeding, including the Information Commissioner's representations and affidavit and documentary evidence. As I write this I have been unable to find this new folder but I will be checking often for it and will advise when it appears. Happy Hunting Gordon A. 3. The place to contact re searching further for b/m/d records is BC Vital Statistics Agency. Their website is at: http://www.vs.gov.bc.ca/genealogy/ Contact information is at: http://www.vs.gov.bc.ca/admin/offices.html The British Columbia Archives cannot do anything for you regarding birth /marriage /death records, as they do not have legal custody of those records. They simply provide access to the microfilms and the index. I have no idea if the Vital Statistics staff can do any further searching, beyond looking in the same index you searched, or what charges they might levy to do any such searching, but it's certainly worth asking. I would recommend asking to speak with a supervisor, as I've had different answers from different staff members when at the counter with such complicated queries as this one, and the supervisor has been able to straighten out the answers. 3. Hi Claudia There is no record of the family crossing the border they lived in the same house in New Westminster from when they built it in 1892 until they moved to Elgin (Surrey) in 1906. My ggrandfather owned 2 mills in Cloverdale and built boats in New West, we have his journals for that time period and he pretty well stayed put. Hence the missing names. Thanks anyway. 3. I am positive that I am not the only one that has had difficulty in finding BMD certificates/registrations. I know of an example of how complicated it can be to find registrations - I know of a person who served in the armed forces, worked, married, collected a pension, survived the death of spouse of 50 years - for some unknown reason he finally had to apply for his birth certificate.. imagine his surprise of finding out that the Surname he had carried throughout his life was not his birthname! In his late 70s he had to apply for the original birth certificate, then for a legal change of name to continue using the name he had used for his 77 years *shrugs* Of course, there are those who were literally, if not legally, adopted into my extended family whose names appear as a variation of McFadden (maternal side) who show up in the marriage registrations with all sorts of weird spellings. I am of a mind that all genealogy researchers have an Agatha Christie gene only we act out her imagination in our constant search. 1. missing Cairn and Straube children
    2. elista
    3. Hi List, I thank you for all the suggestions. Rather than reply to each helfpul person individually, I'll address the questions in this post. Possibly it is my fault for not mentioning more info, or saying that I have already accounted for every other Straube entry on the index site for birth, marriage and death. The other Valentine Straube ( wife Mary Kolonoski) and the other Charles Straube ( wife Ellen) are uncles to the boys ( Valentine and Charles) that I am looking for the birth reg. for in 1889 and 1890. The other births are cousins of the ones I'm looking for. Some of the marriages are them. I have enough other documentation to know that these children were born in Vancouver. I also have the probated will from 1923, of their father, Valerian Straube. The will did not offer any new clues, other than his real estate holdings in Vancouver. I have the death registration of some of these people, the ones that I could find. I am quite sure that Valerian's wife was Julia Kolonoskie, even though there is a big age difference. The 3 brothers: Valentine Straube was a locksmith and gunsmith, possibly had a resaurant and shooting gallerery in Hastings park. Valerian had a sporting goods store on Powell St.( Harkley and Hayward?) I was told. Charles was a machinist. So, given all that, is my only hope of finding these 3 birth registrations by writing to the Provincial Archives and asking them? As to Thomas Cairns, yes, he died of a heart attack in Nelson, BC. He was from Edmonton and was just working there for about a year. His son came to retrieve the body within 2 days, and took it home to Edmonton for burial. There is no mention of a funeral home holding the body in Nelson. I have Thomas Cairns marriage cert, ( from MB) and he was born in ON. So he is none of the Thomas Cairns that married in BC. Would they not have had to registrer the death in BC since he died in Nelson, BC? Again, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks so much, Judy.

    3. Judy: Delayed registrations of birth should be in the Births Index. The only difference would be when you found it in the index, you would not necessarily be able to access the film, and you might have to apply to Vital Statistics Agency to get a copy of the registration. There are certainly many cases of births that weren't registered at the time, but usually the person requires a birth record later in order to apply for a pension, etc. If the person died before that was an issue, then there might never be any registration. Does the obituary say that Thomas Cairns died in BC? If he was across the border in Alberta or in the USA when he died, there wouldn't usually be a BC death registration. Was it an ordinary death or an accident? If the death required investigation, there would be a coroner's report. 1. Post 1901 Census - Hansard extracts of Senate debate online
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All Debate on Bill S-18 continued in the Senate on 1 and 2 December. Senator Lynch-Staunton spoke to the Bill on 1 December. For the most part his comments regarding the Bill were negative. My first inclination was to give him a Red X of opposition. However, in the end he made reference to 'keeping an open mind' at this stage of the proceedings. As a result he has been provisionally awarded a Green Fence on the Senators Scoreboard. Senator Stratton left no doubt in his speech as to his opposition to the access we seek and has been awarded a Red X of opposition. Debate was adjourned on Thursday in the name of Senator Noel Kinsella who is already on record as being opposed to access of Historic Census records. He will speak to the Bill next week. Full wording of the speeches in the Senate have been added to the Post 1901 Census Project website at www.globalgenealogy.com/Census . Follow the link for 'New Census Bill Presented'. Should anyone feel it necessary to write to the Honourable Senators, as always I urge them to be polite and respectful in making their points. We accomplish nothing by being rude or abusive in our messages to any of our Parliamentarians. We may in fact accomplish the exact opposite of what we seek if we are rude or abusive. 3. Dear Fellow Researchers: This evening I received the message quoted verbatum my signature below, from a gentleman in Belgium who has undertaken a very noble task as explained thoroughly in his message. Because I had not heard of his worthy project on any of the Mailing Lists I administer or subscribe to I asked him if he wanted me to announce his project to several mailing lists across Canada. Johan responded saying that yes he would like the word to be passed......but he added one caveat. He is currently backlogged with requests from other commonwealth countries and a delay should be expected. His is a very generous offer and I am sure most researchers would agree, his efforts are very commendable. Please direct all queries to Johan at his address at the bottom of his message below. For the moment I'm doing a lot of research for Australians, New Zealanders,Irish, Canadians and British to locate their family members who were killed during the Great War in Belgium or France. If you have any relative who fought in my country during the WW1, I would be glad the locate him and sent you a picture of his headstone. This is free of charge.( For searches and pictures in France ask for details). The only thing I would like in return is his picture. Why? If the picture is of good quality then I plastify it and place it next to the headstone. This way the thousands of tourists who visit these cemeteries can see who's really buried there and do not just see the lonely, sad stone. 1. Post 1901 Census - Access to website
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. If anyone has had difficulty accessing the Post 1901 Census Project website in the past day, please be patient and try again in a little while. Because of problems incurred lately, Rick Roberts has had to change companies where the servers housing the Post 1901 Census Project, the Global Gazette and Global Genealogy websites are located. All of the files have been transferred to a new company and new servers but it will take a little while for all ISPs to propagate the new addresses. Once this process is completed, the move should be transparent to users and any bookmarks you might have had to these websites should still be good. Some people may find problems accessing the Global websites for the next 24 hours although it is expected numbers experiencing this should be minimal. Once the changes have been completed access to the Global websites should be faster and more reliable. It is expected that all should be back to normal by Thursday evening. Happy Hunting Gordon A. 1. GEORGE PLANT & FAMILY
    2. Ron Davies
    3. Hello all, It's been a while. I'm working to expand my mother's paternal family history: that of Thomas Plant born in County Longford, Ireland circa 1810 who married Elizabeth Austin in Kilcommock Parish, Church of Ireland, in 37 Nov, 1837. They emigrated to Ontario about 1855 together with four Irish born children. Three were later born in Ontario. Youngest son Thomas A Plant was my GGrandfather and he remained in Simcoe County. There was an older son Robert for whom I have absolutely nothing; ditto eldest daughter Catherine. I have marriages for three other sisters At least one Plant of another branch, emigrated to Vancouver - became Det George Plant of the Vancouver Police [I believe] and was living here as late as '44. I'm told his wife went by the name Ray [perhaps for Rachael], I'm wondering if there are/were more of the County Longford Plants who wound up in BC. The BC archives list 13 Plant marriages to 1923 and 83 Plant deaths up to 1983 ...and no births pre 1903 I'm hoping that some were from County Longford or surrounding counties and that descendants still reside here. I'd dearly like to hear from any who meet the foregoing criteria or know of them. Perhaps we can assist each other. Many thanks Ron Davies Surrey, BC PS Does the Vancouver Police have archives in which I could search for articles about Det Plant... or in his early days on the force. I understand he died in or near Portland, OR

    1. Tales and Legends of the Upperward of Lanarkshire, Scotland, by D. Lockhart
    2. Carol Trollope
    3. Does anyone have a copy of Tales and Legends of the Upperward of Lanarkshire, Scotland, by D. Lockhart? It tells of a Vere or Weir family, and I do not know what else. The only copy in the libraries of Canada and the U.S. is missing. I hope someone will tell us of the Tales and Legends if they have a copy in their Library. I do not know if the British Isles has a copy which someone there can borrow. Hope some kind person can help, and tell us what D. Lockhart had to tell us.. If SKS knows of where else to make a successful request, I would appreciate hearing from you.

    1. Post 1901 Census - S-18 debate to continue?
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. Resumption of debate in the Senate for second reading of Bill S-18 is Item No. 5 under Orders of the Day for Tuesday 30 November 2004. Whether debate will actually resume, or the inclusion of Bill S-18 in the Orders of the Day is simply a formality I cannot say at this time -- I have not been reading the Order Paper regularly. If debate does resume it will open under the name of Senator Lynch-Staunton. Happy Hunting. Gordon A.
