    1. Post 1901 Census - last column of 2004 posted
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. What is likely to be the last of my columns on the Post 1901 Census issue for the year 2004 has been posted to http://globalgenealogy.com/globalgazette/gazce/gazce110.htm Topics included in this issue include: Information Commissioner proceeding with legal action; Bill S-18; and Holiday Greetings. Unless something extraordinary happens my next column will be posted sometime in January 2005. As of Tuesday 14 December, Second Reading debate of Bill S-18 in the Senate has not yet been resumed. As there is, at most, today and Thursday left before the Senate recesses for the Christmas break, it would seem unlikely that Bill S-18 will be referred to Committee this year. Perhaps the Grinch has found a home in the Senate chambers. <]:-) Parliament will not resume sitting again until Monday, 31 January 2005. I leave Friday morning to travel to Calgary to spend Christmas with my son and two of my granddaughters. While I am away I will be keeping up with my email, and what, if anything is happening with the Census issue. It is unlikely that I will be doing much, if any, updating of the Post 1901 Census Project website. I will be returning home a few days after the New Year. For those who, like myself, drive to visit loved ones at this time of year, I urge you to take a little extra care, and a little extra time to get where you are going. Whether you travel a great distance, or only a few miles, we want you to return home safely. At the risk of being considered 'politically incorrect', I will take this opportunity, on behalf of myself and the Canada Census Committee, to wish each of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Best Wishes also to anyone who may not celebrate Christmas, but celebrate holidays specific to their own faith. May each of you enjoy good health, good cheer, and prosperity in the coming year. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all -- Should there be a branch of the Latter Day Saints in your city or town, I would suggest printing the letter which was part of the column by Gordon Watts, plus take copies of census petitions -- I am certain these would be well-received. http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/index.htm Make a note to pick them up about January 15 to mail to us. Muriel M. Davidson [email protected] Co-Chair, Canada Census committee Brampton, ON * * * * * * * * * * * Gordon Watts' recent column:- My latest column on Post 1901 Census issues is now online and accessible at http://globalgenealogy.com/globalgazette/gazce/gazce109.htm Topics in this issue include reaction to Bill S-18; Latter Day Saints support Bill S-18; Canadian Historical Association supports S-18; John English on secrecy vs. openness; U.S. Surgeon General declares National Family History Day; and British WW I service records going online. ------------------------ Latter Day Saints support Bill S-18 The following extract of a letter sent from the Genealogical Society of Utah to Industry Minister David Emerson is self-explanatory. It is copied here with permission. November 23, 2004 The Honourable David Emerson Minister of Industry 5th Floor, West Tower C.D. Howe Building 235 Queen Street Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0H5 Canada RE: Support for Release of Census information Dear Minister Emerson: This letter is to express the support of the Genealogical Society of Utah ("GSU") for the passage of S-18, the Senate bill that would make Canadian census information available to family historians 92 years after collection. GSU is affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which operates the largest family history library in the world located in Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.A. The library's purpose is to provide access to recorded genealogical data for use by family historians, genealogists, and other who have a legitimate interest in such information. Open to the public at no charge, the library has over 4,000 branches (called Family History Centers) in 88 countries, including 154 Family History Centers in Canada. It is estimated that Family History Centers in Canada serve approximately 172,000 Canadian citizens annually. As you are keenly aware, census records are in important source of information to historians and genealogists, providing such information as names, birth dates, country of origin, occupations, and other valuable information. GSU supports the release of census information to allow interested persons to trace their heritage and believes that release of such information 92 years after its collection provides adequate privacy protection. GSU is concerned about the informed consent provision in subsection 18.1(2) that would apply to the 2006 and 2011 censuses. GSU notes, however, that, pursuant to the terms of S-18, the informed consent provision will be re-evaluated after 2011. Because of its detrimental impact on the historical and heritage value of census records, GSU respectfully suggests the removal of the informed consent clause at that time. Notwithstanding this concern, recognizing the sincere efforts by the interested constituencies that have resulted in S-18, GSU reiterates its support for S-18. GSU further expresses its sincere appreciation to you and Senator Lorna Milne for this initiative to make census information available to the public. Thank you very much for your consideration. Sincerely, (Signed) Wayne J. Metcalfe Vice President Cc: The Right Honourable Paul Martin The Honourable Liza Frulla Senator Lorna Milne

    1. Letters to the Editor -- re Release of Canadian 1911 Census Records
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. I know another Letter to the Editor will be puclished this week, as I received a brief phone call, asking me if I was Muriel Davidson and did I write a letter to the editor. -- YES to both questions. Many people do not use computers -- and the only way to reach them is via printed word. I have set this up as you SHOULD submit a Letter to the Editor -- IN YOUR AREA. Some phrases may be used from my letter, YOUR name would have to be inserted and the data at the beginning would be your own. The letters should be short -- and the first one who makes the Mclean's magazine wins a big prize!! PLease remember -- this is a SAMPLE set-up and letter. Muriel -- I know Gilbert might do some in Quebec. (I hope) ================================ ================================ [Must be included or letter will hit File 13!] Muriel M. Davidson 25 Crestview Avenue Brampton, ON L6W 2R8 905-451-3542 === More information available ============================ A common item in every household years ago was the Family Bible -- with events recorded as births, deaths, marriages occurred. Now, families are scattered and we have to rely on Canadian census records for information. Census records have been available since the mid-1600s, with a few years missing or non-sequential prior to 1867. Now, due to restrictions we have to petition the government to gain release of these historical records. Genealogists, historians and family members were pleased when the Deputy Leader of the Government introduced Bill S-18 on November 2, 2004, with Senator Lorna Milne as sponsor. At present, Bill S-18 has had First but must have Second and Third Reading before proceeding to the House of Commons. Not only Canadians, but people of other countries, are gaining support by signing petitions for release of the 1911 census - 92 years after enumeration. All people are invited to sign petitions, available from <http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index.htm> We need both Senate and House of Commons petitions. There is a great deal of information which would be suitable for a school project and both Senate and House of Commons petitions may be signed by teenagers. Addresses are on the above site, or contact <[email protected]> It would be appreciated if petitions would be placed in strategic spots such as libraries, etc. When Bill S-18 is passed, it will amend the problems incurred previously with Statistics Canada and all historical records from 1911 to 2001 will be automatically transferred to Library and Archives Canada, following the 92-year release period. Above all, when you see your Member of Parliament or Senator, ascertain if he or she is in agreement with census release -- I will be pleased to accept your replies at above email address. Let's assist Senator Lorna Milne in her fight for census release! Muriel M. Davidson Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Brampton, ON ============= > > > >

    2. Hello Everyone. This is my very first time on this list in the hope that someone can possibly help me? I am trying to trace my great-aunt LILLIAN HOWARD who left England for Canada some time in the early/mid 1900s. All I know of her is that she was born 1894/5 in Ipswich, Suffolk, although her parents were living in Wandsworth, London (they must have been visiting relatives in that area since Horace was from Hadleigh in Suffolk). Lillian eventually married a JOHN (JACK) MOLYNEUX and lived in British Columbia (Victoria, I think). Family “history” has it that John Molyneux owned a salmon canning factory. That’s it, that’s all I have. Unfortunately there is only my mother (her niece) left of the Howard family and she is 85 and can’t remember much anyway. Is there any hope for me? Can anyone suggest what I should do? Not much to go on, I’m afraid. Best wishes Brenda (Silver) Basingstoke, Hampshire, England

    1. Re: Lockhart, Forrest, DeVere, Vere, Douglas,Dawson, Hasileig, Dickson, Wallace
    2. Hi, "CATT" Because we are in the business of finding rare and/or expensive books that we can re-publish on CD for people like you, we have some expertise in tracking down things like this. (Just as an aside, I don't tell this list what we have available of interest to the BC area because your list administrator has told me she doesn't want our information posted on this list. Unfortunately this also means we don't look for books in on your area.) Your book was a little hard to find so I think it is very rare indeed. I did find one record of it in the Library of Canada and I've made a copy of that record below (converting it to "plane text" for posting has messed up the formatting but I think you should still be able to understand it.): AMICUS No. 28823982 (this is an important number for finding it again) Monograph TITLE(S):*Tales and legends of the Upperward of Lanarkshire PUBLISHER: Biggar, Scotland : D. Lockhart, 1860 DESCRIPTION: 1 v. (various pagings) SUBJECTS: Legends--Scotland--Lanarkshire Lanarkshire (Scotland)--History I also checked the location of this only copy and it's held at the University of Guelph, McLaughlin Library and it's Interlibrary Loan Holdings Summary number is: DA 880.L2 T34. I tried to understand if the book was available for interlibrary loan but it said it was available in one page and then said it was not available on the next page. I'd say your best bet would be to take this information to your local public library and get someone who knows their way around the technicalities of the Canadian ILL system to give you a hand. It was clear that the Guelph library would make copies for you on request, but it looked a little expensive if you didn't know exactly what pages you wanted. Incidentally, I also checked the World-wide availability of copies of this book for sale and there were none! That's only about the second time I've ever completely failed to find a copy of a book for sale at ANY price! That's why I think it is a very rare book. Hope this is of help to you. 3. These are some of the families mentioned from The Upper Ward of Lanarkshire, mentioned in the collected Tales and Legends of the Upper Ward of Lanarkshire, Scotland, published in Biggar, Scotland by D. Lockhart. Probably previously published in a newspaper in Biggar, Scotland, before being published in 1860 as a book. Margory Weir, a tale of James V -- Popular superstitions -- William Dawson, the Covenanter -- Hunting lodge of James V -- The marriage of Wallace -- Death of young Hasileig -- The murder of Marion -- Mary Dickson, a tale of Douglas -- De Vere, of Craig-Lockhart Castle -- William Douglas, of Covington Castle -- Sir Symon Lockhart -- The Knights of the Thummle -- The blood-stained altar -- Forrest, the rebel trooper -- Ada De Vere, a legend of Stonebyres. The record gives no author, but rather D. Lockhart as publisher, in Biggar. Is the book in someone's library or a book seller's library somewhere? Would anyone who has read any of these tales tell us what they are about. I have ancestors names among the families mentioned in the Tales.

    3. To Raymond Chan, M.P. I notice you were elected in your riding in June, 2004. Very possibly others have written asking your decision about census release and Bill S-18. which hopefully will appear in the House of Commons some day -- presently in the Senate of Canada. Your personal empty message board may be found at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Score1.htm#BC If you notice the BLUE ? -- even a reply will change the colour. You may have been given the impression that you speak for only your constituents -- instead, whenever you speak or vote in the House of Commons, your decision affects all Canadians. Many of us have missing members of our family, which might be found on the 1911 census -- you might not be able to envision searching for ones who are now deceased -- family historians do these things! Also the 1911 census was the last one prior to the First World War, from which many did not return. Let's add a few words in that empty space on your message board -- I know you must be otherwise, or else you would not have been elected in your riding. Muriel M. The name of McLaren makes me think she was divorced/widowed upon marriage to Trevor. She died in 1974 aged 55. There was a daughter Judith living with her at the time. I'm unsure if Judith was her own child or her's and Trevor's. If anyone knows anyone related I'd like to get in touch with them. Thanks for all past help which has been monumental in helping me get to this point. Cathy

    3. Hi everyone I just started a new website called Blacksheep Ancestors. It's a Directory of Links for Prison & Convict Records, Court Records, Executions, Famous Outlaws, Bandits & Criminals. I have some links that may be of interest for British Columbia. It's at http://blacksheepancestors.com/canada/index.shtml If you have a Blacksheep ancestor (or think you might have) be sure to check this site out. Because it's new there might be some glitches but I'll get better as I go along. I'm planning to get more records of prisoners and other institutional records in the 19th and 20th centuries as time allows. -- Tyler S. BlackSheep Ancestors http://blacksheepancestors.com/

    3. Thanks Gordon. I was watching for any postings on this but missed it again. It must have been in a long post as I never read posting that are over a few sentences.
