Hi, I know it's cold and we are all very busy getting things done for Christmas to even think of doing much or any work on genealogy, BUT - if SKS in the city of Winnepeg is going to the library sometime after Christmas, I would be most appreciative if a look up could be done for me. I am in need of the info on an obituary for Emily Corbin. Two were listed at the Ancestry.com site as: Emily Corbin died May 10, 1875 Emily Corbin died June 09, 1875 Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Joan Perkins - Syracuse, NYS, USA

To all:- This special message may be forwarded to friends and other lists, but I am only sending it to lists I administer and the two, NOVA-SCOTIA and LUNEN-LINKS, where the first item about census release was made in March 1999. Of course it is being sent to the CCC list and committee!! One of the best Christmas presents at this point in the life of Bill S-18 would be a HUGE stack of petitions -- we use Non-Resident and Senate in the Senate, House of Commons in the House of Commons. The Non-Resident is for all those other than Canadians. Download from http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/index.htm There are addresses where to send beneath the petitions. Families are gathering at this time of year, students may get these signed at school (print a copy of this memo and send petition copies -- the teacher might love you). I have yet to see a petition from a Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions or other clubs. Surprise me!! Street addresses are not needed -- NAME, CITY, STATE or PROVINCE, ZIP/POSTAL CODE. I know Senator Lorna Milne's policy advisor is on the CCC list -- but this is one time he will not report to his "boss". Thanks, Jeff! Senator Milne is a genealogist -- her work for us has interrupted finishing several books plus important research -- she knows all about "brick walls" -- the 1911 census might knock down one of them. I do not mind if you only send in Page 1 -- but hopefully both 1 and 2. Let's surprise Senator Milne -- my delivery system is to put them in at the mail slot in her door -- let's cover the rug that is on the inside of her hallway!!! Muriel M. Have just today learned of Family Member who lived in Victoria. Am hoping someone can tell me anything about: Lawrence Yeats & his wife Evelyn. They owned an apartment building called Laralyn Apts. And also owned a coffee shop near the Parliament Bldgs. Also understand Lawrence drove a tour bus in Victoria and was also involved in real estate. Lawrence would be my 3rd cousin (possibly 2nd) and until today did not know he existed. Lawrence passed away in Sanich, B.C. in 1994. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Hi all! I'm back from my very short trip to New Zealand, having had a wonderful time & doing all that I had most hoped for- seeing my Dad's 83 year old sister & visiting their old homestead, about which I had heard so many stories, were my priorities. I also met a lot of my first cousins & their families, saw a lot of the North Island as I bused from one cousin to another. I found graves of great-grandparents & saw that of my 3G grandmother, the first to be buried in the Eskdale Cemetery near Napier, was shown beautiful portraits of my grandmother's parents & of course recorded these with my digital camera. In both Napier & Wellington, I was able to meet up with distant cousins who were also into genealogy & they were all very kind in taking me to see the graves & showing me things it would have taken days to find on my own. I had several things I couldn't fit in, like meeting up with internet acquaintances, including Ron Curtis from this list and spending more than overnight in Gisborne where I was born- not to even mention South Island! Glad I decorated my tree before I left- now easing back to reality! Pam Pam Fairweather Thomson Sechelt, BC, Canada [email protected]
Hi Diane, Perhaps it was bought out by another funeral home. I know the Center and Hanna funeral home in New Westminster was purchased circa 1912 by Samuel Bowell of S. Bowell & Sons (aka Bowell Funeral Home) and many of the records are on the New Westminster Public Library web site at http://www.nwheritage.org/ under genealogy. The earlier records are not online but can be accessed at the library. I hope this info helps. Annette Fulford British Columbia, Canada Email: [email protected] Alternative Email: [email protected]
Greetings All. As expected, Parliament has recessed for the winter break. The Senate adjourned on Wednesday, 15 December without having resumed debate on Bill S-18. The Bill remains adjourned in the name of Senator Kinsella. The Senate resumes sitting at 2:00 PM Tuesday, 1 February 2005 and the House of Commons resumes sitting at 11:00 AM Monday, 31 January 2005. When wishing Seasons Greetings to your favourite MP or Senator don't forget to remind them that speedy passage of Bill S-18 is very important to genealogists and historians. Visiting my son in Calgary, the temperatures are dropping as we get closer to Christmas day. Minus 12 degrees overnight with expectations of minus 17 degrees for tomorrow. A little cooler than I am used to at home, 25 miles east of Vancouver. My Christmas wish for all of you is that at least one, if not all of your genealogical 'brick walls', come tumbling down. Drive safely and return home without mishap. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Watts [email protected] Co-chair, Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC
Hmmmmm it was a Private Company??? So one never knows where the records could go. If you are lucky some kind sole may have passed the records on to someone in the family or to a friend of the family who owned the business... I am also involved in searching down old cars in the Province here, one particularly fairly rare make. There was only one distributor for the manufacture, here, from 1956 to 1972 Most of the company records now reside with a close friend of the owner who is now passed away. This is fortunate. Have a hunt for the owners family someone just might have the records stashed away somewhere. cheers Marv At 05:00 AM 19/12/04, you wrote: >CAN-BRITISH-COLUMBIA-D Digest Volume 04 : Issue 299 > >Today's Topics: > #1 Center and Hanna Records [Diane Brown <[email protected]>] > >Administrivia: >To New Subscribers: >One of the first places you may wish to look is the online >indexes to British Columbia Vital Records, at >http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual/governmt/vstats/v_events.htm#indexes > >These records are freely available and there are several possibilities >for accessing them at a low cost. Sincerely, [Signature} Bill Graham, P.C., M.P. Toronto Centre Encl. ======== QUESTION:- There have been many requests sent to the Hon. David Emerson, requesting he step in and stop Senators who are succeeding very well in stopping progress of Bill S-18. Is this a planned procedure, although it is a government bill? Many would like the reply. ========== 2. Letter from The Hon. David Emerson Minister Responsible for Statistics Canada Dec. 6, 2004 The Honourable Bill Graham, P.C., M.P. Room 418-N, Centre Block, House of Commons, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A6 Dear Colleague:- Thank you for your letter of October 29, 2004, regarding correspondence you received from Ms. Muriel Davidson on the subject of access to historical census records. I am pleased to inform you that an Act to amend the Statistics Act was introduced in the Senate on November 2, 2004. (Bill S-18). A copy of the News Release announcing the tabling of the bill in the Senate is enclosedfor your information. The bill is supported by Senator Lorna Milne, a long-time advocate for access to historical census records. Bill S-18 will eliminate any legal ambiguity concerning the confidentiality status of historical census records. It will amend the Statistics Act to allow access to the 1911 to 2001 records 92 years after each census, without any conditions. The bill will also allow Canadians to decide, starting with the 2006 Census, if they will allow their personal census information to be released publicly after 92 years. I hope that the information I have provided will be of assistance to you in your reply to Ms. Davidson. Sincerely [signature] David L. HON. ANNE MCLELLAN, P.C., M.P. Edmonton Centre Dec. 14, 2004 Dear Mrs. Davidson: Thank you for your correspondence dated November 14, 2004 regarding the status of Bill S-18, An Act to Amend the Statistics Act. I support the facilitation of genealogical research by those who wish to exploretheir roots and family histories, and contribute to the understanding of our national heritage. I am also sensitive to the privacy issues that arise with respect to personal records. As you will no doubt appreciate, it is essential that the integrity of the census process be protected. I can tell you that I will give Bill S-18 my careful attention when it reaches the House of Commons, and I will discuss the matter with my caucus colleagues. I am confident that a thorough debate in both the Senate and the House of Commons will result in legislation that best meets the needs of Canadians. I trust that I have been able to address your concerns, and again, I thank you for writing. Yours sincerely, [signature] A. Anne McLellan
