    3. Hi all, Thanks, Stella, Annabel, Adele & everyone once again. I now have a death (May 22, 1954) for Peter KERR, husband of my relative, Annie K. JOHNSTON (May 11, 1894 - January 18, 1961) & have learned they are both buried at Masonic Cemetery Burnaby. I have sent a message to the cemetery, via their website, as suggested. Also, I now have a death reg. for Annie in my possession, that I ordered online - very informative. That leads me to my question today - did the Grandview Funeral Chapel, Vancouver close? If so, when? Annie's death reg. says this was her undertaker, but my searches on the internet turn up nothing. Perhaps it still operates under a different name? Thank you. Mary

    3. Dear Debi, This is just perfect. Thanks you for sharing this with the list. -----Original Message----- From: debi [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, January 09, 2005 8:08 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [CAN-BC] re Vital events look up FORD Thanks, thanks soooooooo much for everyone's most helpful replies, suggestions and links. They have paid off !!. I contacted someone on the RAOGK list and have already had a reply from her. Turns out it's the right guy!. Amazing - this man had been searching for his father for 50 years and now at least knows his final resting place. I don't know how to word this properly so forgive me if it doesn't come off sounding just right. Genealogist are definitely are a special group of people. They spend countless hours researching; most of the time with little results. It's definitely an addiction - this family history thing but one that gives an individual their roots; ancestral connections and provides us with a background for our present lives. Most persons at least know who their parents are but sometimes along the line your research leads to someone just needing to know that much and with our 'genealogy instincts' to research and not give up this is an incredible resource to those individuals. This is my favorite hobby / pastime - I honestly don't know what I'd do without it and I'm just so happy that there are many others that feel the same. I'm going to attach here something I found on the internet some time ago ( author unknown) some of you have probably already read it. So all in all this is just a big thank you to everyone for being interested in genealogy / family. All the best......................debi in Golden, BC The Storyteller's We are the chosen. My feelings are in each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called, as it were, by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors, "You have a wonderful family, you would be proud of us?" How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do? It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying I can't let this happen. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up,their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us. That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do. ==== CAN-BRITISH-COLUMBIA Mailing List ==== Check the list's archives out at http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/CAN/CAN-BRITISH-COLUMBIA.html

    3. Hello, Hats off to rootsweb mailing lists! A kind gentleman on the SCT-ARGYLL-L gave me the clue I had been waiting for & all the super folks on this list have taken the ball & run with it, resulting in an avalanche of new information. Now I'm wondering if anyone has access to cemetery transcriptions for the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, where it seems most of my folks ended up. At the very least, Annie Kerr (nee JOHNSTON) KERR (May 11, 1894 - January 18, 1961) is there, along with her husband, Peter KERR (b. aft. 1865 - 1954) Also, I believe their son-in-law, John Gunn MACKINNON, (d. 1979) is there too. Annie & Peter had some 5 children that I know of - could be more. Not sure who is yet living, nor all their names. In the Masonic Cemetery, there were some folks whom I thought were possibilities including Bessie Mary KERR & Margaret KERR. Thank you. Mary

    3. Hi Mary, The simple answer is that a death registration will give you a great deal of information including her maiden name and, if known by the informant, her parents names, places of birth, birth date and more.... It is imperative though to ask for a registration and not a certificate. The certificate is genealogically pretty worthless. As well, since it's the time of year it is and most who often volunteer to get the registration copy for you for no charge basically are busy. I use www.bccopies.ca and find Don Crawford very fast and helpful. If you don't get any offers, you might try him. Oh - he's also a very economical way to get your information. Take a look at the web site and good luck. Eleanor, B. C.
