    3. You should also check out the BC Genealogical Society's Resource Centre in Surrey . You can check the BCGS catalogue before you go (on the website) & you can call or write ahead of time for more info---lots of BC info including cemetery indexes & transcriptions, also obit & clipping files. www.bcgs.ca Cloverdale Library ,also in Surrey, has a very large collection of Canadian records on microfilm, including BC vital stats indexes & registration. See their catalogue on-line also at the link below. http://www.spl.surrey.bc.ca/Programs+and+Services/Genealogy/default.htm There is also a Family History Centre in Surrey. Vancouver Public Library has the Vital Stats microfilms (indexes & registrations), also some newspapers, if you are looking for obits, etc. You can also see newspapers at Simon Fraser University or the University of British Columbia. Depending on where your family lived, you may also want to visit one of the archives/museums in the area. Many have useful materials. http://www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/ctyclerk/archives/ Also, you may be able to see cemetery indexes on-line, for e.g. for Mountainview Cemetery in Vancouver. http://www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/commsvcs/nonmarketoperations/mountainview/index.htm Good luck with your visit & have fun! 3. I have a quick question, I hope someone can help with... I am going to be in Vancouver at the end of Feb. for about 6 days....I will be squeezing in visiting cousins etc. and hopefully some family history research. From here in Ontario I tend to order my certificates the expensive way...through the BC archives site. While I am there I am hoping to look up and get copies of as many as I can!! I also want to do some cemetery searching etc. Where is the best place to go to access and copy certificates while I am there? I may try to look up other public documents while there (wills etc.), Where would be my place of choice for this? Any info is welcome. I don't know what I will have time for, but am hoping to at least find out a little info as well as taking tons of photos! Carol in London, Ontario -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 3. Hi Carol, You can go to the Vancouver Public Library in downtown Vancouver. It's a pretty big place and has loads of genealogy stuff. It tends to get quite busy though. They have the microfilmed B,D &M records that can be copied for about 50 cents each. At least when I was there that was the cost. The staff there are wonderful and always willing to help you if needed. I believe the address is 350 Georgia Street and their phone number is 604-331-3600. It's probably best to call and confirm the prices and see if you need reservations for the readers or not. If you are in the Surrey/Cloverdale area there is a library at 5642-176A Street, Surrey, BC. and their phone number is 604-576-1384. They are alot smaller than the Vancouver Library but have tons and tons of information, films, etc. and they are very willing to help you out too if needed. You can also copy B, D & M records there for 50 cents. There is a charge which I think is $2 per hour for the film readers or you can pay for a whole day, which is cheaper. Best to call them first to confirm these prices though and reservations for the readers are a must. They can also give you directions on how to get there. I think if you are out of town they have cheaper rates but I'm not totally positive about that. Happy hunting and good luck! Blanche is listed as living at 2666 Granville Street and employed as a dressmaker from 1929 through 1935 although in 1933 she is listed as Miss B. Chausse. She disappears in 1936. 3. To all:- I am one of those people who print off the scoreboards and it is interesting to learn what is there! Saskatchewan is one province with ONE of each colour symbols - gold, red, green, blue.Senator Herbert Sparrow has retired so this reduced the number who never answered to ONE. This in turn reduces the NO RESPONSE total to 20 -- too many! Add to this the 20 who are NON-COMMITTAL -- work to do! http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Senscore1.htm There are QUESTIONS posted above the Senator's scoreboard. Please change the first line to read: "Would you, as an appointed Member of Parliament, etc." [Senators are appointed but are still Members of Parliament, although we generally use this term to refer to members of the House of Commons] Prince Edward Island is the only GOLDEN province, plus YUKON. The Senate of Canada resumes February 1, 2005 -- time for letters to be written and mailed -- emails are easy to delete. Above all, copies to both Gordon Watts and myself - these may come by email -- and by sending to both of us, one will remember it. Nw Brunswick will have one less BLUE ? when the letter from Senator Marilyn Trenholme Counsell, MD is posted -- symbol will likely be GREEN. Does any other committee members have copies of letters SENT or RECEIVED from any Senator? Senator Lorna Milne needs support! It is hoped Dan Johnson writes to one New Brunswick Senator -- he might be very persuasive -- also live in the same area. Petitions have come in every day, mainly Non-Resident -- but genealogical societies are adding to the numbers. To top it off -- veterans at Sunnybrook Veteran's Wings are learning all about researching family history -- I have been asked to be present at this next Wednesday's session. Muriel M. 3. Hi Listers I am seeking information on the above person, my grandfather - DONALD KENZIE FORSYTH. He was born near Brussels, Ontario in Morris Township of Huron County, Ontario in February 1890. He was the son of Alexander Forsyth (born in Buckie, Rathven, Scotland in 1843) and Mary Linton (born in North Dumfries, Ontario about 1852). Donald married my grandmother Margaret Levina Ward (Maggie) of Grey Township, Huron County in 1916 and they had 5 children - William (1917?), Alexander (1919), Clifford (1923), Audrey (1925) and Shirley (1927/8). All his relatives knew him as KEN FORSYTH. In the 1930's, Ken separated from my grandmother and his children, went west and was never seen or heard from again. I am trying to find out any information that I can about him - where he lived, what happened, when he died and where he is buried. If anyone has any information about him, I would very much appreciate hearing. Thank you Deb

    1. RE: [CAN-BC] JEHNNS / FORD

    3. Hi Debi, The questions that come to mind, are: Is there a chance there are living descendants who could tell you more? Have you got information on what happened after his death? Was there a probate file? (at BC Archives) Did he have children? Does his wife's death show up in the deaths index later or possibly is it there under a new (remarried) name so it's hard to find? What does the death registration say about his occupation? What does it say about how long he was in that town, in the province, and in Canada? These can sometimes be clues to where he was before Vancouver. There are occasionally records in BC Archives related to an individual's occupation. Just for example: for those who owned their own business, search the dissolved corprorations records, or sometimes for some government employees, you might find a mention in old BC Sessional papers. And there are specific records such as the 1923 and 1928 teacher's reports from rural communities, that could contain information on people working as teachers in those years. Have you done a search of the Vancouver City Directories already? If the death registration indicates he was in Vancouver for more than a decade, you can get Vancouver city directories for 1948 and earlier, on microfilm, by interlibrary loan. Other than that you need a volunteer to look them up. These tell you a fair bit about a person...occupation and employer changes over time, address changes, sometimes even you can see when the person married, starting in the 1930s when married women were finally listed too, not just single women and widows. And if there were adult children in the home (over about age 18) they would show up as being at the same address, in the city directories. If you can't get much information on him, can't find a probate file, the next thing you might try is the widow's records. Without definite clues to an earlier location, one thing I find you CAN'T do easily is find where in British Columbia the person lived before he arrived in Vancouver... it simply isn't practical to search years of issues of the entire BC City Directories for a name. 1. RE: [CAN-BC] Preston in YouBou
    2. Claudia Cole
    3. Hi Lorri, Youbou is pronounced "yoo bo" because it was named after Yount and Boulton. It's a former milltown, near the town of Lake Cowichan, on Cowichan Lake. Fortunately for Youbou, it's still in a very beautiful area, so it's leaning towards tourism now that the lumber mill is closed and the giant trees are mostly gone. So you'd be looking for a Lake Cowichan paper, which would be found at BC Archives, and possibly you could look in Lake Cowichan too. There's a museum there and historical society. Kaatza Station Museum http://cowichanlake.ca/index.php?page=museum.htm Unfortunately, a search at the BC Archives website shows no newspaper for Lake Cowichan in the period you want. (May or may not have been one, but they don't have any on microfilm from that period now.) You could also try searching in the Duncan newspaper, which is a pretty good bet, because Duncan is the next bigger town along the Cowichan Valley, and they had a reliable weekly that covered news in the whole valley. This is all on lower Vancouver Island, if you're looking for it on a map. http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-27A60F7/library/newspapr/bcarch/arch_ d.htm DUNCAN Cowichan leader. -- Filmed LLBC 53reels 1905:May 5 - 1985:May 23 Amalgamated with Cowichan news 1985:May 28 Continued by Cowichan news leader (Duncan, BC) http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-27A60F7/library/newspapr/bcarch/arch_ l.htm LAKE COWICHAN Lake Cowichan bulletin. -- 4 reels 1947:Jan 2 - 1951:Mar 15 Lake Cowichan gazette. -- Filmed LLBC 1 reel 1995:Jun 14 (v.1:n.1) - 1995:Dec 27 Lake Cowichan herald. -- 1 reel 1965:Jul 1 - 1965:Oct 7 Lake news. -- Last filmed LLBC 1995 29 reels 1966:Jul 7 - 1995:Dec 31 If you are trying for the Cowichan Leader, you might find it exists in microform in the Duncan Library, worth checking. Ask Barbara, at the Kaatza Station Museum in Lake Cowichan, if there are any old 1950s newletters for the Youbou area in her museum. You can't get a loan of anything that's held at BC Archives, so if that's your only source, the obit search would have to be done by a volunteer in Victoria; but if the microfilms exist in a public library, you could get the needed reel by interlibrary loan. I suspect with the age of this man, 92, there would be a bit of a write-up about him in the weekly newspaper, when he died, particularly if he lived in the area for a long time. 3. Hello Pam Thanks for your reply. He did die in St Mary's Hospital, unfortunately he was cremated at the Vancouver Crematorium. It was supervised by the Harvey Funeral Home, Gibsons. Trying to locate his son in law could be one way to go, also his will, if he made one could give some clues. He was a widower but I have no idea where and when his wife died, she did not come up in the BC death index. After I posted I found the map and can see Hillcrest Rd, to Stella, unfortunately I have already given my $20 Can. to purchase the death certificate. The person who died was George Robert Follows age 78 and born in Stafford England., he was a widower at the time but the informant was his son in law C Spencer, I know that George had at least 2 daughters , Doris and Yvonne but which one was married to C Spencer I don't know, he did have a son George T born in 1921, and there might have been other girls. The emigration records show he went to Canada in 1927, local family knowledge say he was back in England in the 1950/60 but then he disappeared , it seems he went back to Canada.
