    3. Hi all, To all those (and there were many) who assisted me on my search for KERR & JOHNSTON relatives in the Burnaby/Vancouver area, a great big thank you! Carol looked up some phone book listings for me & after we got a promising address, I wrote a letter. That was sent out on Friday, Feb. 4th. I got a friendly reply just yesterday. Hooray! After about 80 years & 1,000s of miles, 2 branches of my mother's family are back in touch. Don't you just love happy endings? Mary in Ontario

    1. Kincolith, B.C.
    2. Carol
    3. Hi Everyone, What a gorgeous day here on the Sunshine Coast - and probably all sorts of other beautiful B.C. places too! I should be outside raking dead stuff out of the garden but....... Does anyone know where I can find Kincolith on the 1901 census?? I have searched and searched!! I believe it may be a Nisga'a Reservation and I've looked through three "books" containing the names of the Natives on reserves: Babine (Agency) Book 1 Yale and Cariboo, Cassiar, Quesnelle Book 2 Yale and Cariboo, Cassiar, Quesnelle Book 3 Yale and Cariboo, Cassiar, Stony Creek, Fort George, etc. but no luck. I have my Grandmother's name (Katherine Amelia Wells) and the names of her parents (Albert & Martha Wells) and have found them on the 1891 census but can't find any of them on the 1901. Any clues?? Many thanks, Carol Wright --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? All your favorites on one personal page Try My Yahoo!

    2. Bridget Watson
    3. Hi List, I heard from the Automated Reply system at the B.C. Archives on Wednesday. In a nutshell this was the answer to my query. "Remote general reference inquiry service is suspended. Unfortunately we are unable to answer your request. B.C. Archives Staff are being re-allocated so they can review records required for litigation and other research. ......... This service suspension will be reviewed on March 31, 2005." So it looks like it will be awhile before I get my answer, if I get one at all. Thankyou to everyone on the list who answered me, and all your suggestions. Someone also suggested that if there were a Cornoners Inquest held the Death may not have made it onto the index. I am awaiting a reply from the Coroners Office. Cheers, Bridget GlamFHS # 5865 I transcribe for www.freebmd.rootsweb.com I use www.archivecdbooks.ca to help in my research

    1. Grafstrom
    2. Birgitta Nilsson
    3. Lars Grafstrom (born 1858, Lomma, Sweden) married to Albertina Johansson (1864 Barkåkra, Sweden). emigrated in 1901. According to the Ellis Island lists they arrived in New York and the ticket was paid by an ”U S citizen”. According to a relative they lived in New Westminster, British Columbia, but I can't find them in the B C Archives. Maybe the relative has mixed him up with his halfbrother Carl who lived in Vancouver? If anyone can help me to find out anything about them I'd sure apreciate it! /Birgitta Nilsson --------------------------------- ALL-NEW Yahoo! Messenger - all new features - even more fun!

    1. Subject: Naturalisation
    2. Carol
    3. Carol, As I mentioned on the list to Claudia my experence has been that a number of the British born I have research do not turn up in the Immigration data base either. Although I know for a fact they arrived in the time frame the data base covers and they sailed directly to Canada. Reason for that is a bit unclear - possible passenger lists are missing or the immigration process for British subjects was a bit more relaxed - actually we know it was:-) or prehaps they claimed they were only coming for a vacation and were not recorded as immigrating? ... hard to know the reasons why they do not appear in the data base. Bottom line is that I would not assume they did not come to Canada just because they do not appear in the immigration data base. I believe you have already found a vital event for one of them here so my guess is they missed the data base as mine somehow managed to do or they came via the US. Carol ______________________ Hi Everyone, can I firstly say a huge thank you to everyone who sent me advice on my CHURCHER family and emigration. Are there any naturalisation records on line? As my family were British it appears that they didn't need full immigration, so may not show up on immigration records (they are certainly not online on 1925-1935 list). So they may show up on naturalisation records? Thanks once again for your help. 2. Claudia Cole
    3. Hi Carol and Everyone: Nope, it's the other way around. They MAY or MAY NOT show up in a ship's passenger list, saved by the immigration department, but they will NOT show up in naturalization records. The sample page from a ship's passenger list, which is on the Archives webpage where you start your search for immigration records, http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/020118_e.html shows people from Britain listed. (well, it shows them, if your eyes are good!) http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/020202/images/aur_0003.jpg Naturalization (note our spelling is different) was the process of becoming a British subject, and they wouldn't need that if they were already British. Many people came across the Atlantic to land in a USA port, then traveled on to Canada. Have you thought about looking for them in records from Canada/US border crossings? On the Library and Archives Canada website, where it tells you about the ships' passenger list records, it says: Those arriving from or via the United States are recorded in border entry lists. Are you certain they came between 1925 and 1935? Library and Archives Canada has other records that are not accessible online. http://www.genealogy.gc.ca/10/1008_e.html This webpage gives you information on how to access earlier and later records, and also has suggestions for determining more closely the year in which your family entered Canada. 3. Gosh we have a lot of Carol's! :-) Keep in mind that if they were British they may not show up on any Canadian Immigaration records as they did not need to go through full immigration. They would have been free to come and go from Canada as they pleased as they where British Subject's. I do not recall when it was the British born had to start clearing immigration to get into Canada but pretty sure it was after 1935 - very possible when Canadian citizenship was recognized in 1947? Up until that point, Canadian's were also defined as British subjects, both in Canada and abroad so I do not think many offical records of comings and goings were kept.
