    1. RE: [CAN-BC] informant on death registration question
    2. Claudia Cole
    3. Everything but the information in the medical part of the form, (doctor or coroner's job) and the part about burial (probably comes from the funeral company) is provided by the informant. Given that memory is imperfect, especially under stress, and given that anyone in the family, even a granddaughter's husband, could be giving the information, it's not surprising there are a lot of errors. It's always wise to consider the source! In many cases the informant is simply the records office at the hospital, which takes very little information from an incoming patient...especially one near death!... or the Public Trustee's office if the person had no relations around. To verify such information, the registrar's office would have to undertake extensive research -- and that's not what they are there for. I occasionally see slightly different, more precise information in a person's probate file, from that on their death registration. On the report form that Vital Statistics fills out, re the Wills Notice Search, (a required process -- checking to see if the deceased registered a will) there is a line for the birthdate and birthplace of the deceased. Between the time of filling out the death registration, and the time that the estate is processed, more exact information may come to light in the personal papers of the deceased or from talking to family, so you see just "England" as place of birth on the death registration, and "Windsor, England" on the wills search. Sometimes it IS the job of the executor or administrator of the estate to find out more about the family, make sure all heirs are found, or at least make an effort. Of course there is a limit to how much time an administrator will spend on researching and many heirs are never found. I've noticed the declaration regarding the search for missing heirs usually takes the format "have made numerous inquiries" which doesn't sound like they've done much more than ask acquaintances or neighbours who may only have met the man five years before his death. We all know how much work it can be to trace back through the life of one ancestor, and you can bet the Vital Statistics office isn't remotely interested in taking on any part of that task! So if there's a discrepancy, don't stop at getting the death registration. Check other sources. For tracing the length of time a person was in British Columbia, I'd use the city directories if enough is known about where the person lived. Voters' Lists can be helpful too, but they were only compiled in years when there was an election. BC Archives has all these, also a guide to tell for what years voters' lists exist. One amazing find I had, when searching for the date a family arrived in BC from England, was finding a man's name in the BC Sessional Papers (detailed annual report of the provincial government). He was a farmer, but was hired to run the ferry across a river in his remote area, so we got several other facts besides a date for his arrival in that area. You never know what you might find! 3. Hi Debi, The funeral home records - the information required for the Death Registration. They may also take the information for an obituary to be published. They will have records - re names of pall bearers - how many Limo's - funeral costs - names of some family members - wife, children - perhaps siblings - not really more personal information about the deceased - *one funeral home that I had been in touch with - sent information about where the casket was purchased, where it was build [in B.C.] .when it was sent to Ontario for the funeral, cost of flowers and other incidentals, name of persons paying for same. cost of the funeral, burial etc. names of the pall bearers and relationship to the deceased. number of auto's even the number of flower arrangements received. a copy of the original information taken for the obituary - hand written by the funeral director - and signatures etc of the informant. where the cemetery was - where the reception was to be held Perhaps not all handle information requests in this manner -Since the Funeral Home was close to the Cemetery - we were even sent photo's of the burial site -*the lady who worked at the funeral home - even placed flowers on the grave site. Another working in the Cemetery office - also sent photo's of the site and surrounding area. We can't expect this in a large city - Cheers, Stella At 07:11 AM 3/19/2005, debi wrote: >Goodmorning List > >Thank you all for your help. Their births should be there too. Looks as though James ELDER and Elizabeth GRAHAM most likely were married c1901 in Scotland, so their marriage ought to be easy .... because Pringle Graham's birth registry will give you his parents' marriage date ! By the way, I have all three within my family [REIDFORD], but in Banffshire/Aberdeenshire and much earlier than you for the ELDER. The GRAHAM is on my BROWN side too, but again earlier and in Edinburgh. 1. Post-1901 Census ---Census Petitions COULD Become Easter Eggs!!!
    2. Muriel M. Davidson
    3. To all:- This is a very special request for one who has been working for us since March 1999 -- we did obtain the 1906 census, but Senator Lorna Milne's Bill S-18 and its safe passage would make many of us very happy to have the 1911 census. The Senate of Canada will not meet again until March 21, the beginning of Easter Week -- only four days for work, as I am certain nobody will work on Good Friday. At present I have several petitions which seem to be getting very lonely. Yes, I did ask EVERYONE to send at least 10 signatures to Senator Lorna Milne's office with FREE postage in Canada. I did hear from three people telling me they had sent petitions. We are facing a shortage of time -- it would be nice if all would agree to move Bill S-18 OUT of the Senate by Easter, and there is no reason why this cannot be done. Just because one person stops discussion on a topic HE does not like, is no reason why another cannot re-open the discussion. Frankly, due to Parliament being prorogued whenever we have had a census bill, this is really the FIRST one that might make it. Let's give Senator Lorna Milne petitions to use as backing that WE desire the census records. I am certain veterans or families of same would feel doubly honoured if the census records and Bill S-18 were released and passed by May 8th, the 60th anniversary of VE-Day. I know many might not have celebrated that date -- but I did!! Just imagine Page 1 of the Senate and Non-Resident petitions are Easter eggs -- I will assist with delivery of same should any arrive at my home. Teenagers have spare time on school break -- they might enjoy filling up Page 2 -- street names not necessary. Muriel M. Fortunately - there are some people who value the early history of the area. and rather than destroy the heritage homes - have brought them back to life. I hadn't been there for many years -but visited - in hope of still finding some of the homes that I had found listed in paperwork - What a wonderful surprise - to find them still standing - and in wonderful condition. - a little gem of a community. 2. Hi Debbie, I monitor these lists in case there are any requests for books that my company can provide as copies on CD. I was therefor interested in your request, and went looking for the book. I couldn't find anything anywhere with the exact title you gave. The closest I could find was "Strathcona County: A Brief History" and I only found that in the Library of Canada. From it's scarcity I'd say it was quite a rare book. If this is the book though, I think you may be making your request on the wrong list. I'm not an expert on the geography of Western Canada but from what I saw while searching the "Strathcona" of BC is a suburb of Vancouver and a Provincial Park on Vancouver Island (and a school?). I had a look in our publication of "Sunset Canada," which is a turn of the century description of the delights of BC, and it looked as if the area that is now Strathcona Park was virtually unoccupied at the time it was declared a park. 3. Hi Debbie: Are you also subscribed to the Alberta Rootsweb list?? If not, you might want to join that as Stratcona County is in Alberta, not BC. BC is the province next door to Alberta but it's sort of like asking on a Michigan List for info on New York, you'd be better off likely on the list for that locale. Here are the subscribing instructions for the Alberta List: # Subscribing. Clicking on one of the shortcut links below should work, but if your browser doesn't understand them, try these manual instructions: to join ALBERTA-L, send mail to [email protected] with the single word subscribe in the message subject and body. To join ALBERTA-D, do the same thing with [email protected] * Subscribe to ALBERTA-L * Subscribe to ALBERTA-D (digest) Same with your cemetery query, you'd be better to ask that of someone living in Alberta. Here is the Alberta Genweb project: http://www.rootsweb.com/~canab/ The Edmonton Branch of the Alberta Genealogy Society: http://www.agsedm.edmonton.ab.ca/index.html Alberta Family History Society: http://www.afhs.ab.ca/registry/ The Edmonton Public Library has 2 copies of the book, according to their website. Use their Ask a Librarian on-line service to see if they will look up the entry for you. Make sure you tell them you live in Michigan so that they will see there is no possibility of you coming into the library. Go to this page first and type in your e-mail address, click submit e-mail and then a page will come up where you can type in your request for the book lookup: http://www.talonline.ca/cgi-bin/aaq/c/post.pl?sector=2 The National Library of Canada has a copy of the book. I don't know if they can do Inter-Library Loans to the US or not but here is the info on the book which you can print out and take to your local library to see if you can get it from there: AMICUS No. 2485139 Monograph NLC COPIES: NL Stacks - FC3695 S75 R43 NL Stacks - FC3695 S75 R43 - Copy 2 Preserv - off site - FC3695 S75 R43 - Copy 3 - NL copy: Signed by author. - NO ILL NAME(S):*Redekop, Linda, 1943- Gilchrist, Wilfred, 1937- TITLE(S): Strathcona County : a brief history / Linda Redekop and Wilfred Gilchrist PUBLISHER: [Edmonton] : W.
