Hi Shannah, I did a Google search on the meaning of the Masonic Lodges and got loads of hits. Try this one: http://www.stjameslodge47.org/freemasonry.htm It is just one of the many sites that explain what the Masonic Lodge is all about, though there are many others including a few on Kaslo, if you put "Kaslo" into your Google query. Hello, Listers I was wondering, if SKS would, kindly, help me with this problem. I am really befuddled! :) My grfa. TWISS, W.J. was an Anglican through and through, and, yet, he had something to do with the Masonic Lodge in Vancouver and the Zion Masonic Lodge in Kaslo, B.C., where he lived for a while, but, was still very much an Anglican. I was wondering, if there might be any websites on this religion? And, could anyone, perhaps, enlighten me, as to why he may have been involved in this other religion? It seems that he had his "finger in every other pie", so to speak. This info. came from a couple of obits from the Vancouver Sun. I would be gladly appreciated any ideas or hints on how to go about researching this part of my grfa.'s life. Thank you very much. Shannah
I wonder if there is anyone looking up the family Baptie. Jeannie Elder married Archie Baptie in Cochrane Alberta she died in 1941 & I believe she is buried in Edmonton, while I have very little on Archie's family I have a great deal on Jeannie Elder's family Jeannie & Archie had two daughter Catherine & Mary. Mary married Gordon Quigley they lived in Kelowna BC. That's all I know I'd be pleased to hear from anyone in the family to exchange information. I have the Elder family going back to 1785 in Scotland Bob Elder Durham England
To Mr. Raymond Chan - MP, Richmond Riding It will be one year in June since you were elected by the constituents of Richmond, BC -- I have family members who you represent in Ottawa. Have you ever been asked about Canadian census release? Bill S-18 might have its final vote when the Senate resumes April 12, 2005 -- you have been asked how you would vote, but to date we have not heard from you. To educate yourself, http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census and check on PROGRESS ON BILL S-18 Should the final Senatorial vote be positive, Bill S-18 will then be coming to the House of Commons, at which time you will be asked to represent your constituents and vote on it. At present, although newly elected last June, you have a BLUE symbol, meaning you never answered -- possibly your secretary did not pass on the message -- if so, we will receive information. Let's change the BLUE symbol for a shining GOLD symbol!! http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Score1.htm#BC Muriel M. I found this cookbook recently in a bookstore & thought someone might find a relative in it. Lots of well known names, but many others too. This is the names listed A-L; M-Y will follow. If you see a relative & would like their recipe (some people had more than one), please e-mail me off-list. Lydia Arsens, M.L.A. from 1953-56, was apparently very interested in health & nutrition. She submitted first aid hints, & there is an ad with 'frying hints' for the Majorette Coffee Shop at 1313 Douglas, Victoria which, I believe, was her husband's & her business. Hello All! Well, I received a great response to my email to you all, explaining about the wonderful video that has been compiled by the Vancouver Trams Society. For those who didn't see the email, this video shows Vancouver, Burnaby & New Westminster as they were back in the early 1950's. All the old buildings are shown along with the people who worked and lived in the areas as well as, of course, all the Trams. The video takes you on a ride along all the old routes. It's a wonderful ride down memory lane for those of us who remember those days. The open air tourist tram and it's employees and entertainers are shown at length. The Tram Society has a web site at http://www.trams.ca . If you click on the link about the historic buses there is a link to souvenirs. This list shows the prices of the Video - which is $20.00 CAN and there is now a DVD for $25.00. This is not a short "clip" but a lengthy video that is quite entertaining. I understand that if you contact Dale Laird at [email protected] he will give you the scoop on how to order. Or, you can contact the Transit Museum Society itself. I hope Dale's email address is correct. It's a little difficult to decipher on their web site. Good luck - and I hope you enjoy! Monday 5:30 P.M. Well, I am ready for whatever comes tomorrow when I meet with my 4 doctors. I have spent the last 3 days cleaning house and getting all ready for the hospital stay. Have my ditty bag packed and if they say they want me to go to the hospital tomorrow--I am ready!! I baked on Sat and made 2 large fruitcake and 3 large cherry pound cakes and mixed up four batches of English Tea Cakes which I chilled to bake off on Sunday. On Sunday I made a 9"x13" carrot cake also. Then I made a huge pot of chicken /veggie soup. Today I cleaned the whole downstairs while Jack ran errands just before noon. Then this afternoon I cleaned the upstairs and then washed and set my hair. Don't want to go into hospital with out having done my hair!! I would really like it if they would have things all planned and I could just go in and have this surgery done. In the am today I went over to the hospital to have a Pulmonary Function Test and I was ever so pleased at how well I did. Even after that bout of asthma (as a result of that bad cold I had in Jan.) I really had very good lung capacity. The Tech made me a copy to take to Seattle because I had told him I was going to have cancer surgery. He was interested and then told me he'd had a melanoma type one removed 8 years ago and so far no reoccurrence. He said the doctors in Seattle were going to love seeing this PFT results!!!! The gal who took my blood for the blood gas test , asked what I was going to Seattle for. After I told her, she looked kind of stricken and said her hubby had a lipoma on his back and he did not give it much thought--but maybe he should. I told her to get him into the doctor right away as I had two others that were not malignant but third was not a charm!!! I hope I helped him get help before things went sour for him. I say to all of you--check yourself from stem to stern and if you find something rush to your doctor. John and I will be off to Seattle before 7 am and are eager to meet this team of doctors. Janis is awaiting my call and then she will hop on the plane to come up. Cupboards are all loaded as is the freezer and 2 refrigerators. I bet she and Jack eat out though as Janis loves to come up and enjoy all our good restaurants. She is not that wild about cooking but can if need arises!!! They will do fine. Now I will love you and leave you. The best part of my journey is that I have Jesus as my Lord and Savior so no matter what befalls me, I have Him with me to uphold me and comfort me. He gives me the strength to get through each day. I would wish that for all of you . God loves you and so do I. Thanks for your good wish and prayers. I am comforted by your love and concern for my well being. I am thinking positive thoughts!! Always , Joyce.
I have run across an old photo album of my Great Uncle Reggie CATES, and in it are a couple of photographs of his seafaring buddies Peter KIDD and Ernie MARCH. Greetings All The Senator's Scoreboard on the Post 1901 Census Project website has been updated with information available to date. Nine new Senators appointed 24 March 2005 have been added. Even with these new Senators added there are still seven vacancies to fill -- one each for New Brunswick, PEI, Manitoba and British Columbia, and three for Quebec. There have been a number of changes made regarding positions of Senators. On 23 March, 19 Senators voted YES to a proposed amendment to Bill S-18 that would have had the effect of closing all public access to records of Census between 1918 and 2005. Each of those Senators, including nine who had previously been awarded Gold Ticks of Support, have now been awarded a Red X of Opposition. Assuming that there will be a recorded vote on Third Reading in the Senate of Bill S-18 we will be watching closely to see how they vote at that time. Please note that a recorded vote is not a certainty. Votes are normally done on a YEA/NAY or show of hands basis, and a recorded vote is done only if requested by the Senators. Current standings on the Senator's Scoreboard are as follows: 36 FOR, 20 AGAINST, 18 NON-COMMITTAL and 24 who have not bothered to respond to our requests for their position. The Senate resumes sitting on 12 April 2005. We hope that Bill S-18 will complete Third Reading and be referred to the House of Commons on that day, or shortly after. Happy Hunting Gordon A. Hello from Scotland I was wondering if anyone knew of a family of Camerons who are buried in Royal Oak Park Cemetery in Victoria. My great aunt Maggie McDougall married a James Cameron, bricklayer in Kenmore, Perthshire in 1881. She was 18, he was 20. Sometime after that they left for Canada. They were firstly in Toronto, then Muskako District Before 1906 they moved to Alberta where I found them in 1906 in Vegreville. But by 1927 they must have moved to BC as Maggie is buried in Royal Oak Park Cemetery, she died in Esquimalt in 1927. James Cameron was buried there in 1946 and son Duncan Robertson Cameron in 1944. His obituary says he left a sister Mrs EA Barnes in Victoria but I can find no sign of her Can anyone help please Kay ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, April 03, 2005 9:05 AM Subject: CAN-BRITISH-COLUMBIA-D Digest V05 #92 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello Judy & List! My uncle belongs to a club (not quite sure what it's called!!) but they restore the old trams and also run a refurbished tram in the Granville Island - Science World area during the tourist season. They have produced a wonderful video tape of all the old Tram Lines, showing all the old routes. These video pictures were taken before the trams were discontinued, so the cities of Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and even the line that ran all the way out to Chilliwack are shown, as they were, back in the early 1950's. Many of the conductors were named, especially the ones who were part of the sight-seeing tram that ran in Vancouver. That particular line is shown extensively, along with lots of information about the men who worked on it and the people who entertained the tourists. I have a copy of this tape - although I'm in the middle of moving so I can't view it right now to check for names - but I can find out where a tape can be purchased if anyone is interested. It's fully narrated by two men who used to run these trams and is chock-full of information about the lower mainland area in general as well as information about the trams themselves. It's a wonderful, nostalgic look-back at our city and her people, the way they were "back then". The tape runs for at least forty minutes or longer if I remember correctly. I believe the cost was something like $20.00, so if anyone is interested I will contact my uncle and see if more can be purchased. Hello! I am new to the list and apologize for the length of this posting. I am hoping that someone may be able to assist me in finding information about the two companies listed below. I have checked with various museums about the mining companies without success. I am hoping that there may be a mining history expert out there. I have checked with the B.C. Provincial Archives several years ago and they did have the incorporation papers of Western Abrasive Paper Company. That is the only information that they had on file. I have checked recently and no new information was found. This is related to the ALASKA GARNET MINING & MANUFACTURING, CO., operated by a group of women nea Wrangell, Alaska at the mouth of the Stikine RIver. The company was formed in Minneapolis, MN in 1906 and operated until some time after 1925. A link to my web site with information about the ledge and the women is listed below. In 1921, the local newspaper reported that the WESTERN ABRASIVE PAPER COMPANY, Lmt. Victoria, B.C was to ship three tons of garnet form the mine on board the Royal. The stones were to be used in the manufacture of abrasive paper. The news story stated that Anna had arranged the lease for the company. In 1923, the newspaper reported that Miss Durkee and Miss Elmer had been visiting Wrangell again in regards to the garnet mine. The women reportedly had again leased the site to the Canadian company. Canadians connected with the company were Joseph Lawrence NEARof Victoria, John E. BURGESS (he may only have witnessed signatures) and Edwin CONVENTRY who signed as scretary of the company. In 1925, J.G. Shepard of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Geological Survey, surveyed the garnet ledge. According to his report, the ownership of the garnet mine was attributed to Miss Annie Durkee, of Arizona and was under the option to the AKASKA GARNET MINING CO., Ldt., a British Corporation headed by COL. HARRISON, of Victoria, B.C. I have not been able to find out any information on the company. Any assistance would be appreciated. I am more than willing to share my information with family members. I have been researching the women for 25 years and would like to include the British Columbia companies in their story as completely as possible. Thank you for your help! Hi Is there anyone on this list from Vancouver ?? If so please can you tell me if 1788 Haro Street is still standing. Is it a house or an apartment or what ? My Great Uncle John Brown lived there in 1941. Any help would be most welcome. Helen
Thanks to everyone who had great ideas of finding more on Teddy Lyons. I have lots of clues to follow up on now. Again, thanks so much. Judy
Good Morning Bill and Helen, The Address is in the West End of Vancouver - very near Stanley Park At aprox corner of Denman and Haro Street. http://www.mapblast.com/(kd4zltea1hgw1u45321wlh55)/map.aspx?L=USA&C=49.29062%2c-123.13632&A=7.16667&P=|49.29062%2c-123.13632|1|1788+Haro+St%2c+Vancouver+BC|L1| Tiny URL for the Above: http://tinyurl.com/4gjrl A search of the City Directories - for the time frame 1941 can be searched to see if it was a house - or apartment building. May have been a large rooming house as well. The directory will show - names of all persons living at the address. There are very few houses left in the West End - most are high rise - or semi high rise apartment buildings. Depending on the weather - I may get a chance to get out of the house - and go into town - sometime today, If I do - I can probably take a stroll - to the address - to see what stands there now. Otherwise - not till after April 2 - when I know I will have a couple of free days, friends ate taking their little ones to Disneyland. Hi Many thanks to all those that have given me web sites to look for the above. Thanks again Helen
Perhaps you've already done this but a Google search brings up the following sites which mention Teddy Lyons: http://www.terracelibrary.ca/history1/istradeski/stradeski.html includes a photo of Teddy Lyons on a streetcar http://www.vancouverhistory.ca/chronology6.htm http://www.vancouverhistory.ca/chronology8.htm http://www.powerpioneers.com/BC_Hydro_History/1860-1929/chronology.aspx There is also a small soft cover book called Vancouver - A History in Photographs by Aynsley Vogel and Dana Wyse published by Altitude Publishing which has a photo on page 72 of Teddy Lyons on a streetcar (photo credits indicate Vancouver Public Library so perhaps you could try contacting them for further information). The caption in the books says "On the steps is Teddy Lyons, the famous quick-witted conductor of this B.C. Electric observation car. Such cars toured sightseers around the luxurious Shaughnessy mansions and around Stanley Park from 1909 to 1950." I bought the book in Vancouver's Gastown area last summer, about $15. Hope this will be of some help to you. Hi Listers, This list is so helpful that I'd thought I'd ask the following question, just in case someone remembers, or can help. I'm writing a heritage album on my paternal grandmother's family, and one of the relatives was a Teddy LYONS, who was the conductor/guide for the open air observation car tours that used to run in Vancouver. He did this job from 1911 to about 1950. He was my grandmother's cousin. I have one photo of the observation car, and one short write-up from The Province, Sept. 20, 1998 written by Chuck Davis, that a kind gentleman sent me a couple of years ago. I'm hoping to gather more photos and information on this tour, and hopefully a better photo of Teddy, as the one that was in the Province, by the time it was photo-copied and sent to me, is not usable to add to my album. Any help or suggestions on finding further information would be graefully appreciated. Thank you, Judy Blackfalds, Alberta.
