Hello, Not sure of which family you speak of. The heads of branch families do hold grants of arms from Lord Lyon but they are always vested in the individual. A few thoughts for consideration. There are no family coat of arms in principle. Arms belong to each armiger as a personal heraldic honour from the Crown. In Scotland the Chief's arms, in this case the Duke of Argyle are the rightful heraldic ensigns or arms of the Chief. By courtesy Clans folk may wear what is known as the Clan badge which is taken from the Chief's own crest badge, unless one wears the badge of their respective Chieftain [branch chief], Baron or Laird. If one is an armiger of Scotland then in principle one could wear our own crest badge as an armiger, accordingly. If we are not an armiger it is not correct to display the coat of arms of armigers as our own. My MacLea's in the 1600's were feudal Baron's and adherents of Argyle following him in military service in the then Dutch States. I hope this helps. Grant MacLea South. Esq. [Armiger] B.A. M.A. ALSC.
