Hi Kerry, I too believe that enumerators could read and write, penmanship...that's another story! But, I don't think they did too bad a job and without their efforts we would have a much more difficult time placing and sorting families together. It wouldn't surprise me that persons today could have an easier time getting a job to be a census worker than they did back in the 1800's. Thanks for your reply. Take care, Sylvia
