Dear Beth, I wanted to reply to you via the mailing list, because I feel that your research past and present is so important that I wanted everyone to read about the names and areas you are working on. I now remember you! I remember your name and email address, from long ago, when I was just beginning to learn about my Campbell family in Virginia, USA. I copied off many of the reports you shared, because they dealt with the Campbell name in general, in early VA, and Scotland, and I felt that someday they might help me. Let me tell you what I am working on, and how I connected to the Campbell name. My great-grandmother was Susie Jane Campbell b. 1892 TX, both her parents were Campbells, both her parents were from the same community, Temperance, Amherst Co VA. They were not first cousins, but they were 'cousins', they were both from the same Campbell descendants group, that of the earliest ancestor proven, George Campbell and wife Caty, of Amherst Co VA. This George and Caty left a very large family in Amherst Co, and Nelson Co VA. George's farm was about 460 acres, and sat on both sides of the Piney River, so his original land which was first called Amherst Co VA when he died, then became split between Nelson Co and Amherst Co VA when Nelson was formed in 1808. I studied all the Campbell families of this exact area, and found that they were not all related. There were 7 early Campbell men, who left descendants, but these 7 men were not related that we can prove at this point, perhaps they were eventually relate in Scotland in older times. So I identified the 7 separate Campbell lines of Amherst Co and Nelson Co VA in colonial times up to 1860 census. I am not alone in this work, there are MANY fellow researchers, both on this list and off, who have contributed greatly to my understanding of these families, and there are many who know a great deal more than me, I have only been at this work for 4 years, and really only the last 2 years have become acquainted enough to be able to share and post reports. I did post 41 numbered reports, to this list, concerning these 7 Campbell lines, and those would be archived at the mailing list archives, should be all year 2005. For some crazy reason, my Campbell ancestors stayed in one small area in VA, and married back into the same Campbell group of descendants, and so my great grandmother is not only Campbell from both her Mother and Father, but also from other ancestors, so that she is predominately Campbell. My great grandmother Susie Jane Campbell could be traced back to George Campbell, who was married to Caty, and is considered to be our earliest proved ancestor, from his son John, his son George, and possibly from his son Henry. So she descends from 2 or 3 sons of the same Campbell man. Now you know who I am and what I am working on. I really only have info on the Campbell families who are in Amherst and Nelson Co VA, however, because Rockbridge Co is next door neighbor to us, I do have several folks who located there after leaving Amherst/Nelson area. Now I hope everyone will read your original email to me, below, and respond back on the mailing list to bring to light comments, data, and questions which will further your research. I would like to know why he was born in Ky. when his parents lived inthe area of Richland Co.,Ill. AmI just confused or did I read the information I received incorrectly. Now,someone was asking about an Archibal Campbell. My one of my files I have of family sheet compiled by a Helen Franklin Baker who was of Morristown, Tn. which shows a Joseph Campbell who dfied @ 1725 onthe ship coming to America at sea. He wasof Scottish origin ofNorth Irelandandhe was Presbyterian (Scotch Covenanters) He landed in Philadelphia and remained in Pa. It shows his children as Archibald who went to S.C. after landing with Robert William Colin Catharine ROBERT born@ 1718 in County Down, Ireland and died Dec. 24, 1810 in Hawkins Co.,Tn.
