    3. Cecil, Back in Colonial times there were several Lords Proprietors who were given title by the King of England to vast tracts of land in America. One of these was Lord Granville whose lands lay in the vicinity of the present North Carolina. There is still a Granville County in north-central NC. This may have no bearing on your ancestor, but the name may have caught the fancy of some new mother once long ago.
