Dear Gloria, and all other Campbell researchers: According to my files, of the various Campbell families in Nelson Co and Amherst Co VA, there are 3 distinct and separate Ambrose Campbell. #1. Ambrose Campbell, b. 1740 in Scotland, died 1811, his Will was proved 1812, he was a Revolutionary War Vet, his wife was Margaret, and her name is stated Margaret in his Will, which is located in Nelson Co archives. He fought at Yorktown, with Lafayette and Washington. His father was Henry Campbell, married to Charity. They arrived in Amherst Co VA about 1761, and Henry is buried in Amherst Co VA. #2. Ambrose Campbell, b.prior to 1770, married on 7-2-1799 to Nancy Gillespie, d/o George. His father was George Campbell, married to Catherine, aka Caty. This Ambrose sold his share of his father's farm to his older brother John Campbell, who married Frances. #3. Ambrose Campbell, b. 1782, died 1857, married to Dorcus Edsall, married 6-22-1811 at Rockbridge Co VA. His father was Edward Campbell, s/o George Campbell married to Catherine Campbell, aka Caty. This Ambrose was nephew to Ambrose Campbell who married Nancy Gillespie. In conclusion: we have 3 men all named Ambrose Campbell, 2 of the men are from the same ancestor, that of George Campbell, who married Catherine, aka Caty. One of the men does not relate to the other 2, as he comes from a separate and unrelated Campbell family, that of the Scots immigrant Henry Campbell, who married Charity. However, all three men all named Ambrose Campbell did all live in the same basic area in Virginia, but all three are different ages, marriages, and death dates.
