To a.b.craig and Lynden Harris; Earlier Campbell's of Amhert/Nelson Co., VA that were mentioned in the Nov. 12th posting: Henry (b.1706 Scotland - d. 1772 Amherst Co.,VA) Sons: Aaron, Ambrose, Joel and John Daughters: Catherine and Rachel Neil (b. ? - d. 1777 Amherst Co., VA) Never married, but had one "natural daughter" Elizabeth Campbell who married Hugh Campbell (2nd marriage for Elizabeth) and moved to TN. George #1 (b. ? - 1777 Amherst Co., VA) Sons: John, Archibald, George, Thomas, Edley (male? female?) Daughters: Catherine, Elizabeth, Margaret and Ruth George #2 (I don't have this file, but this has been covered extensively in posts) Lawrence (or Laurence - b. ? - d. 1813 Amherst Co., VA) Sons: James - moved to N. C. d. before 1813 Catlett - moved to N.C. Francis Lee - b. 1760 d. 1840 Louisa Co., VA Laurence Jr. - d. in Green Co., KY Daughters: Nancy, Mary Ann, Pamelia, Sarah and Judith Moses - b. ? - (in most census' for Amherst Co., VA BUT d. before Apr. 1792 in Bedford Co., VA. According to will: Sons: Moses, James, Aron and Henry (and five daughters) If I am reading this correctly, James' wife was Polly Campbell. Polly is generally the nickname for Mary. Pat Carter sent me this information, so she would be the one to contact for more information. patcarter@gobigwest.com Hope this helps to at least rule out some of the earlier Campbell's. The only likely one of this group would be Moses' son James. When I have more time, I'll dig out the earliest census for Amherst Co. Nelson Co. didn't come along until 1808. Phyllis in CA
Phyllis and Pat; Yes, I see that Moses Campbell is in the Amherst 1783 head of household census with a family of 10 but James Campbell is likewise in the same census with a household of 6. Unless Pat can clarify the dates and ages, its difficult for me to understand the family of Moses Campbell as he had sons Moses and James as well. Can you help Pat? My James Campbell did marry a Mary or "Polly" - a Smith and I note one of the deeds James and Mary signed she was identify as Polly Campbell. James and Mary would have been born about 1750 as daughter Elizabeth was born in 1774 and James Jr was born in 1775 (confirmed by census). In searching the Moses Campbell connection, I ran into a Patrick Campbell who came into Augusta County (Rockbridge area) very early as I found land purchased by him there about 1750. He filed his will in Rockbridge County in WB1 page 1-20 and identified one son James Campbell. The will is dated 15 July 1777 - a perfect date!! Our James Campbell purchased land in Rockbridge County (Irish Creek) in 1792. Any suggestions?
