    3. Oh Yes, I am going from memory now but I do have documents to back up my statements. James Campbell (have not seen the "W" before) provided his own surety with his marriage to Judith Fitzgerald's on 31 December 1823. Yes, they married in Nelson County. Certainly, this could have been the second marriage for James Campbell Jr. He was born in 1775, and to be married in 1823 means that he was 48 when he married Judith Fitzgerald. Judith Fitzgerald was the daughter of Bartlett Hawkins and Maskey Coleman Fitzgerald. They had no children of their own but they raised Walter Downey Snead, the bastard son of Mary Snead and "Big John Fitzgerald" until Walter was about 12 to 15 years old. I could go on, but....Bh ----- Original Message ----- From: <scraft@cfw.com> To: <CAMPBELL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 13, 2005 6:00 PM Subject: Re: [CAMPBELL] JAMES CAMPBELL AND MARY SMITH >I am very interestedin the marriageof James W. 1. James Campbell married Judy Fitzgerald
    2. Lilly Martin
    3. Hello to Mr. Harris and Shirley Craft, I see that Mr. Harris said he was working off memory, probably somewhere far from his notebooks, so I will just help out here a bit to specifiy the location of the marriage record. James Campbell married Judy Fitzgerald 1-1-1824 at Rockbridge Co VA, this is from the official record index (Reel 37, VA state arcives) Mr. Harris has identified this man as James Campbell, Jr b. 1775 d. 1854. s/o James Campbell Sr and Mary Smith. James Campbell, Jr may have married first to some unknown person. His father lived in 1815 about 16 miles West of Nelson Co VA courthouse. James Campbell, Jr left this area and moved to Madison Co AL about 1820, but later returned and married in 1824 to Judy Fitzgerald, aka Judith, d/o Bartlett and Maskey Fitzgerald. There were no children noted to this couple, but they did raise a 'foster' son, Walter D. Snead, s/o John Fitzgerald and Mary Snead, born out of wedlock. Concerning a James Campbell of Augusta Co VA, the only marriage record I see on the index is to Victoria Laporte 10-19-1795. I have no idea as to the identity of that man, but he is the only James Campbell listed married in Augusta Co VA on Reel 37, 1761-1852. There are marriages which are NOT listed here, and I do not know why the listing is not complete, but in fact there are missed marriages in this index.
