Dear Beth and All Campbell researchers from Virginia Roots, Here are the early couples who left descendants, and were in the Nelson Co and Amherst Co VA area in the colonial period. 1. Neil Campbell , Will written12-3-1776, Recorded 3-3-1777 Amherst Co VA. Had 949 acres. From what we know to date, this Neil never married, but did have a daughter out of wedlock, and did provide for her, and acknowleged her as Elizabeth Ballor/Ballou, d/o Tabitha/Tabithy, d/o Leonard. This Elizabeth married as her second husband a man named HUGH Campbell, so the estate of Neil Campbell did go to Hugh Campbell, as the husband of Elizabeth. In those days the property of women was in the hands of their husbands. When Hugh Campbell and Elizabeth left the area to move to Tennessee, Hugh sold off 1712 acres, in 1813. Most of that land was on Buffaloe River, Amherst Co VA. This Campbell line of Hugh and Elizabeth would constitute a Double Campbell line, as they were both Campbells genetically. I have no idea as to the parents of either Neil or Hugh, but Neil mentioned a sister near Perth , Scotland, so that would tend to portray Neil as having been born in Scotland, and possibly from an area near Perth, Scotland originally. #2. Francis Campbell, m. Isabelle: we do not know his parents, but we know his descendants. Francis b. abt 1750, d. 1823 in Nelson Co VA. It is possible that he was first married to a woman named Mary Davis, though this is not proved to me. #3. Henry Campbell b. 1706 Scotland, d. 1772 Amherst Co VA, married to Charity. We don't know his ancestors, but we know his descendants. #4. Lawrence Campbell b. 1736 Scotland d. 1813 Nelson Co VA. married to Henrietta Catlett, her surname is recognised as such by Clan Campbell North America. Catlett ancestry is prominate in Virginia Colonial military history. We do not know the parents of Lawrence, but we know his descendants. Lawrence could be possibly related to Henry #3 above, because they did have many dealings together, but were not father and son. #5. George Campbell b. about 1700 d. 1777 Amherst Co VA. Married to Margaret. We do not know the parents of George, but we know his descendants. It is thought he was born abroad, but this is not proven. #6. George Campbell b. about 1720 d. 1791 Amherst Co VA. Married to Catherine, aka Caty. We do not know the parents of George Campbell. It has been thought he might be son of George Campbell #5 listed above, but I have never seen any proof of that, and I doubt it based on ages alone. A Family History written about the Childs-Chiles family has stated his father was Charles Campbell of Ireland. We need some proof, or further records to substantiate this claim. This man is my ancestor, I come down from 2 of his sons, and possibly a third son as well. This man left a very large group of descendants in the Amherst Co and Nelson Co VA areas. There are still men who are named CAMPBELL from this ancestor living today, and I would hope at some point one or more would have the DNA test done www.familytreedna.com #7. James Campbell , married to Mary Smith. Please see below, scroll down, to see Mr. Harris' original email describing this family. Does this James Campbell relate to George and Caty Campbell group? If we had a man living named Campbell today from this ancestor, James Campbell, we could do a DNA test against a George and Caty DNA test participant, and we could know for sure if there was a match, or not. #8. John Campbell b. 1771 d. 1858 Nelson Co VA, married Amelia Coffey. This man is said to be the son of Francis Campbell and Mary Davis, though I do not know the proof of this yet. This John might be the son of #2 above, with a first wife, prior to Isabelle. I do not know for certain. In conclusion, the people named Campbell who lived in both Nelson Co and Amherst Co VA in the time frame of 1750 to 1860, were from the above 8 couples. All of these 8 couples left descendants. Some of the descendants stayed in the area, and some left for other areas. Some of these couples left large families, and some left very small families. As far as we know today, there is no relaitionship between these 8 couples listed. If we had DNA test participants from these 8 lines, we would certainly know for sure, if there were common ancestors, but so far we do not have any DNA test participants from these groups above with published results. Please tell me if I am wrong. It is throroughly possible, that there are indeed several MORE Campbell couples in this same 2 county area which I am presently unaware of. In the past I published 41 numbered reports on this mailinglist about the descendants of all the people I listed here. Please look at the archives of this mailing list to review all or some of those 41 reports. If you have any specific questions about these people, just ask. I made a list of every household in the 1860 census, in both Nelson Co and Amherst Co, and I tried to identify the ancestry of each man named Campbell, going back to his earliest ancestor. I also posted that information several times on the mailing list. If you have a specific name to ask about, I can look at my list and see if I was successful in identifying them, there were several men who were a mystery to me and others.
